Disney Cruise Line announced on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, that it would base its still-unnamed new ship in Singapore for at least 5 years starting in 2025.

“This is a very exciting year for The Walt Disney Company — 2023 marks our 100th anniversary,” said Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro. “As part of this, Disney Cruise Line is currently undergoing an ambitious expansion with new ships and new destinations around the world. We are incredibly excited to make Singapore the home port to our seventh-launched ship, which will sail from here year-round starting in 2025.”

Let’s dive into all the details of this exciting development.

Disney Cruise Line’s push into the still-growing Asian travel market was made possible thanks to the acquisition of an uncompleted ship originally known as the “Global Dream.” The previous owner of the ship went bankrupt and Disney announced in November of 2022 that it would acquire the ship for Disney Cruise Line.

Disney’s cruise division is working with Germany’s Meyer Werft shipbuilders to complete the 208,000-gross-ton ship. Once complete, it will have a capacity of about 6,000 passengers in addition to approximately 2,300 crew members.

This new ship — which doesn’t yet have a new name — will be the operator’s seventh, and it will sail year-round for at least 5 years exclusively from Singapore on Southeast Asian itineraries, a first for Disney Cruise Line.

The ship is expected to boast a full range of Disney touches for the whole family, including world-class dining and entertainment, excellent service, and, of course, appearances from many characters in the Disney family including Mickey and Minnie Mouse, various Disney princesses, Marvel superheroes, and more.

Disney — and Singapore’s tourism board — believe that basing a ship at the city-state’s port will attract “millions of local and foreign cruise passengers across the five-year period,” including those who fly to the city through its globally-connected airport.

Final Thoughts

It is apparent that Disney Cruise Line is rapidly expanding. They made a bold decision to acquire an uncompleted ship that was previously meant for another cruise line and announced that it would base this new ship in Singapore exclusively for the next 5 years.

We’ll be sure to provide updates as we learn more about the cruise line’s newest ship and when itineraries and ports of call are announced from the Singapore homeport.
