Emirates, the Dubai-based airline, has announced a new fifth-freedom route connecting Miami and Bogotá, Colombia.

Let’s jump right into exploring the details of this unique new route.

Emirates’ New Miami to Bogotá Route

Airlines sometimes operate fifth-freedom routes to connect passengers between 2 airports outside of its home country. These quirky flights allow you to experience an international airline on a route you may not normally expect, such as Singapore Airlines’ Manchester to Houston or Air France’s Los Angeles to Pape’ete service.

Emirates has announced that it will begin operating the long-awaited fifth-freedom route between Miami International Airport (MIA) and El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, Colombia, on June 3, 2024, with daily service between the 2 cities.

The daily service will connect Dubai and Bogotá via Miami, with Emirates flying their Boeing 777-300ER, which has 354 seats, including 8 first class seats, 42 business class seats, and 304 economy seats.

This immediately makes Emirates the most appealing option for passengers traveling between the 2 cities, putting them in direct competition with other airlines such as Avianca, Colombia’s flag carrier, American Airlines, and LATAM, as well as Spirit Airlines and JetBlue operating out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Emirates’ new flights will operate according to the following summer schedule starting on June 3, 2024:

  • Depart Miami (MIA) 12:35 p.m. — Arrive Bogotá (BOG) 3:25 p.m.
  • Depart Bogotá (BOG) 5:25 p.m. — Arrive Miami (MIA) 10:15 p.m.

Then, the flight times will be slightly adjusted for the winter schedule, starting on November 3, 2024:

  • Depart Miami (MIA) 12:20 p.m. — Arrive Bogotá (BOG) 4:10 p.m.
  • Depart Bogotá (BOG) 6:10 p.m. — Arrive Miami (MIA) 10:05 p.m.

The launch of this new route between Miami and the Colombian capital will provide a historic, first-ever connection between the northern part of South America and the larger Middle East region. Bogotá joins São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires as the fourth South American city that Emirates will serve.

How to Book

You can now purchase tickets for this new route on Emirates.com, the Emirates app, or through a travel agent.

At the time of writing, only cash fares are available for the one-way flight from Miami (MIA) to Bogotá (BOG), with prices beginning at $498.30.

Looking at several dates for the rest of the year, the fares seem much higher than other airlines operating the same route. Hopefully, Emirates will adjust its pricing to be a bit more competitive on this new route, as its onboard experience surpasses that of its competitors.

It’s important to note that when searching for award tickets, Emirates did not list Bogotá as a city they served. It seems that the airline has not yet made award flights available on the Emirates website, but cash fares are still bookable.

We will keep an eye out for when Emirates releases these awards for bookings with Emirates miles and update this article.
