When Emirates announced changes to Skywards award pricing that took effect on May 20, 2026, most travelers immediately assumed the worst: another major loyalty program devaluation. And yes, some awards absolutely got more expensive.

First class, premium economy, and certain business class awards now cost roughly 15% more than before. That part hurts — especially for travelers booking Emirates’ premium cabins. But after comparing award pricing before and after the changes, the actual impact proved much more mixed than the initial headlines implied.

One of the biggest surprises was that Emirates left Economy Saver awards completely untouched. At the same time, the airline introduced a brand-new one-way Business Saver tier that can actually make some one-way business class awards cheaper than before.

So while this was definitely a devaluation across several areas, it wasn’t the massive one many Skywards members feared. Here’s what we found.

Here’s What Actually Changed With Emirates Skywards Awards

As we covered in our earlier reporting on Emirates Skywards recent devaluation, Emirates officially said Skywards award pricing increases would apply to first class, business class, premium economy, and upgrades beginning May 20, 2026.

But once we started comparing pricing before and after the changes, it became clear this wasn’t a straightforward across-the-board devaluation. Some award types barely changed at all, while others saw noticeable increases — and in one case, Emirates actually introduced a better pricing option than before.

Here’s where things stand now.

Economy Saver Awards Stayed the Same

One of the biggest surprises from Emirates’ latest changes is that Economy Saver pricing was left completely untouched.

In every example we checked before and after May 20, Saver pricing remained exactly the same. For example, New York (JFK) to Dubai (DXB) Saver awards continued to be priced at 30,000 Skywards miles one-way.

Even Economy Flex Plus pricing held steady, with the same JFK-to-DXB route remaining at 50,000 miles one-way.

That’s important because Economy Saver is arguably the most commonly booked redemption tier in the Skywards program. For many travelers booking long-haul economy flights to Dubai and beyond, these changes may not affect them at all.

Business Class Awards Got a Major Shake-Up

Business class is where the most significant changes happened. Before May 20, travelers booking one-way business class awards were often stuck paying higher-priced Flex Plus rates, since Emirates didn’t really offer a true Saver-level one-way option.

Now, Emirates has introduced a brand-new Saver-level one-way business class award priced at exactly 50% of the round-trip Saver fare.

For example, the new one-way Business Saver fare from JFK to Dubai now costs 96,000 Skywards miles, offering travelers a much cheaper alternative to the pricier Flex Plus rates that started at 138,000 Skywards miles one-way.

We also found some surprisingly good pricing on Emirates’ fifth-freedom routes. For instance, Emirates operates a daily flight from Miami (MIA) to Bogotá, Colombia, which previously hovered around 52,500 Skywards miles one-way in business class. It now shows Business Saver pricing as low as 36,000 miles one-waya 31% award price drop post-devaluation.

At the same time, Emirates increased Business Flex Plus pricing by roughly 15% across the board. JFK to Dubai rose from 138,000 to 159,000 miles one-way, while Los Angeles to Dubai jumped from 157,500 to 181,000 miles.

That creates an interesting split in the program. Travelers who can lock in the new Saver awards will often pay fewer miles than before for one-way business class flights. But travelers with less flexible schedules — especially those forced into higher-priced Flex Plus awards when Saver space isn’t available — will now end up paying significantly more miles.

First Class and Premium Economy Took the Biggest Hit

The biggest downside here is for travelers booking Emirates’ most premium awards outside the new Business Saver pricing. Premium economy pricing increased by roughly 10%. For instance, the JFK-to-Dubai route pricing rose from 78,000 to 86,000 miles.

First class awards saw even steeper increases. JFK-to-Dubai first class pricing climbed from 163,500 to 188,000 miles one-way.

Unlike business class, there’s no new Saver-style pricing here to offset the higher costs. If you regularly redeem Skywards miles for Emirates first class, you’re simply paying more now.

Final Thoughts

Make no mistake: this was still a devaluation. Emirates raised award pricing across several premium cabins, and travelers booking first class or Flex Plus business class awards will absolutely feel it. But the change also wasn’t as terrible as when the news first broke.

The new Saver-level business class awards are a welcome addition, especially for travelers booking one-way itineraries. And with Economy Saver pricing staying completely untouched, a big portion of Skywards members may barely notice these changes at all.

Ultimately, Emirates didn’t simply hike every award overnight. Instead, it reshaped the Skywards program, creating some obvious pain points but also introducing a few surprisingly valuable redemption opportunities in the process.
