Lounge access is invaluable for frequent flyers who like to work, eat, or relax before a flight. And anyone who appreciates visiting airport lounges will certainly appreciate this news.

American Express and Lufthansa are expanding access to Lufthansa lounges for eligible Amex cardmembers.

Let’s take a look at the details and what this could mean for your next flight with a Lufthansa Group airline.

Expanded Lufthansa Lounge Access for Amex Cardmembers

American Express and Lufthansa‘s long-standing lounge agreement has been significantly improved for cardmembers, as Loyalty Lobby flagged.

For years, Amex and Lufthansa have provided some form of Lufthansa lounge access to those with the Platinum Card® by American Express, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, and the Centurion® Card from American Express*. This is valid for passengers traveling in any class of service and those without Miles & More or Star Alliance status.

*Information regarding the Centurion Card was independently collected by Upgraded Points and not provided nor reviewed by the issuer.

Before now, this lounge access benefit was limited to passengers flying only on flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, or SWISS. However, Amex and Lufthansa have opened up access to passengers flying in any cabin across all Lufthansa Group airlines. This includes passengers flying with Air Dolomiti, Edelweiss Air, Eurowings, and Discover Airlines.

This change applies to Lufthansa’s lounges in Germany as well as its international locations, so eligible Amex cardmembers flying in economy with Brussels Airlines, Edelweiss Air, or Discover Airlines from New York (JFK) to Europe are now eligible to use the airport’s Lufthansa Business Class lounge in Terminal 1.

Like many airlines, Lufthansa maintains different lounge tiers. Which lounge you can access is dependent on your ticket and the credit card you hold:

  • Lufthansa Business Class Lounges (entry tier): Eligible American Express cardmembers flying economy with any Lufthansa Group carrier
  • Lufthansa Senator Lounges (middle tier): Eligible American Express cardmembers flying business class with any Lufthansa Group carrier
  • Lufthansa First Class lounges (top tier): Centurion cardmembers flying any cabin class with any Lufthansa Group carrier
Hot Tip:

American Express cards aren’t the only ones that offer lounge access. A number of other premium travel cards also confer lounge access as a benefit.

Final Thoughts

At a time when lounge access seems to be getting ever tighter, it’s great to see Amex and Lufthansa coming together to change that narrative by opening up lounge access to eligible cardmembers flying on any Lufthansa Group carrier.

We won’t get greedy, but it’d be great to see this perk expanded even more to include lounges from Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and SWISS.
