For frequent flyers and points-and-miles enthusiasts, ExpertFlyer has long been one of the most powerful tools for tracking airline seat maps, monitoring award availability, and setting alerts when hard-to-find seats open up.

Now the platform is getting an upgrade. ExpertFlyer is rolling out several new features designed to expand what users can track and search for within the tool.

Here’s a closer look at the new features coming to ExpertFlyer.

A Closer Look at ExpertFlyer’s New Features

Here’s a look at the biggest updates now coming to ExpertFlyer.

Enhanced Visual Seat Maps

One of the most noticeable upgrades is a new visual seat map tool built directly into ExpertFlyer.

In the past, travelers needed to visit other websites to view an aircraft’s seating layout with solid details, as ExpertFlyer had a very bare-bones setup. With this update, ExpertFlyer now displays a detailed seat map directly within the platform, making it easier to evaluate seats and cabin layouts without leaving the site.

The new seat maps show useful details such as cabin layout configuration, seat pitch and width, aircraft variants, and specific cabin products. Available and occupied seats are also clearly displayed, helping travelers quickly understand what the flight setup looks like before choosing a seat or tracking availability.

That added context can be incredibly helpful when you’re deciding where to sit or keeping an eye on better seats opening up. Instead of guessing what the cabin might look like, you can quickly see the layout and available seats in one place.

And if you prefer the original interface, ExpertFlyer still lets you switch back to the classic layout anytime.

Another major improvement is an expanded systemwide upgrades (SWU) search feature, which will be particularly useful for American Airlines elite members.

Previously, finding upgrade space meant searching 1 route and 1 date at a time, which could quickly turn into a long and tedious process. With this update, users can now search up to 330 days in advance across broader regions, making it much easier to spot upgrade availability without running dozens of individual searches.

Results show upgrade inventory in fare class C, which you need for these awards, along with the number of seats available. For example, C7 indicates 7 upgrade seats are open, as shown in the screenshot below.

For travelers with systemwide upgrades to use, this should make it much easier to find flights where those upgrades can actually be applied before they expire.

It’s worth noting that the expanded SWU search feature will only be available on ExpertFlyer’s Elite plan.

Hot Tip:

If you’re a top-tier elite with American Airlines sitting on systemwide upgrades, ExpertFlyer’s new expanded search could be a game changer. Instead of checking 1 flight and 1 date at a time, the Elite plan now lets you scan wide date ranges and regions for confirmable upgrade space.

Expanded Alerts and New Quick Alerts

ExpertFlyer is also expanding its alert functionality, giving users more ways to track seats and monitor changes to their flights.

Previously, basic members were limited to just 4 seat alerts, while premium members could set 200 alerts. With this update, those limits are increasing significantly:

  • Basic plan: 50 alerts
  • Premium plan: 250 combined alerts

The platform is also launching a new feature called Quick Alerts, allowing users to monitor important updates for a specific flight. Travelers can set up to 3 quick alerts per flight, including notifications for schedule changes, flight alerts, and aircraft changes

These alerts make it easier to stay on top of itinerary updates that could affect seating, upgrade opportunities, or your overall travel plans.

New Pricing Structure

Lastly, ExpertFlyer is also introducing a new pricing structure, with a few different subscription tiers to choose from. Pricing has increased slightly, with the paid tiers rising by about $3 per month compared to the previous plans, though the updated interface is noticeably cleaner and more robust.

Here’s a quick look at the updated tiers:

  • Free plan: Lets you run basic searches and set 1 alert at a time.
  • Basic plan ($6.99 per month): Includes 50 alerts and 250 queries per month, plus a 5-day free trial.
  • Premium plan ($12.99 per month): Includes 250 combined alerts, plus a 5-day free trial.
  • Elite plan ($19.99 per month): Includes everything above plus access to the new expanded systemwide upgrade search

In short, the biggest differences between the tiers mainly come down to how many alerts you can set and whether you want access to the expanded upgrade search feature.

Areas for Improvement Remain

While the new features and new interface are great, ExpertFlyer is still missing multiple airlines from its website, limiting the utility of its tools. You can’t search for award space or upgrade options with numerous Star Alliance airlines — including Lufthansa, Swiss, and Copa — nor can you search with Etihad, Iberia, or LATAM.

Adding these missing airlines is an area travelers care about, so we hope these improvements are also in the works.

Final Thoughts

ExpertFlyer has long been one of the go-to tools for travelers who like to monitor seat availability, award space, and flight changes. The new seat maps, expanded alerts, and cleaner interface make the platform easier to navigate while adding more functionality.

Overall, these updates should make ExpertFlyer an even more useful tool for travelers who rely on it to track seats, upgrades, and flight changes. Hopefully, more improvements are on the way.
