Finnair has introduced a first-of-its-kind Avios subscription, letting you lock in a steady stream of monthly points for a flat fee. Whether you pay annually up front or month-to-month, you’ll receive a preset amount of Avios that can be redeemed for flights, upgrades, or partner awards.

But is pre-paying for points really a good deal? Let’s look at the numbers.

How the Finnair Avios Subscription Works

Finnair has introduced a new Avios subscription program that provides travelers with an easy method to consistently add points to their balance by receiving an allotment of Avios every month.

Members can choose from 4 monthly deposit options: 2,000, 4,000, 10,000, or 20,000 Avios.

The program offers flexibility regarding payment, as you can pay monthly or prepay for a full year. Those who opt for annual payment can save extra cash compared to the monthly rate. Pricing varies based on the size of your selected Avios package and your chosen payment method.

For frequent travelers who regularly redeem Avios for high-value flights — especially on Finnair or its Oneworld partners — this could be a strategic way to accumulate points at a predictable, fixed cost.

Is It Worth It?

One of the biggest perks of Finnair using Avios is its flexibility. Since Avios is a shared rewards currency across several major airlines — including British Airways, Qatar Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus — you can freely transfer Avios between these programs and Finnair.

That means the points you earn through a Finnair subscription aren’t locked into 1 airline program. Instead, you can move them to whichever partner offers the best redemption options for your travel plans, whether a British Airways short-haul flight, a Qatar Qsuite redemption, or an Aer Lingus transatlantic deal.

If you go with one of the smaller monthly deposit options, like the 2,000 Avios plan, you’ll pay around 1.8 cents per point if you choose to be billed monthly. Alternatively, if you opt for the largest annual subscription and prepay, you’ll receive 240,000 Avios over the year at approximately $3,200. That breaks down to roughly 1.3 cents per Avios.

Since we value Avios at 1.25 cents each on average, even the most discounted plan has you paying slightly more than the Avios are typically worth. That means a subscription is only a good deal if you have high-value redemptions in mind.

If you don’t want to commit to a subscription, it’s worth remembering that Finnair sells Avios through discounted promotions a few times a year. The discount and price-per-Avios varies between these sales, though.

Final Thoughts

Finnair’s Avios subscription offers a convenient way to build your points balance steadily, especially if you’re a frequent flyer who knows how to maximize redemptions.

While it may not be the cheapest way to buy Avios, the flexibility and predictability can be worth it for the right traveler. Just be sure to weigh the cost against how you plan to use your points before subscribing.
