If you’re heading abroad this summer like I am, you should pay close attention to your credit card perks. You might already have access to a free international data plan without even realizing it.

For me, that perk came thanks to my Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. It’s long been a staple in my wallet thanks to its flexible points (which helped me book award flights to France and cut down on hotel costs), solid travel protections, and no foreign transaction fees on its widely accepted Visa network.

Just recently, I discovered a lesser-known perk on my Chase Sapphire Preferred card that takes things a step further — a complimentary international data plan that helps me stay connected without paying extra roaming charges.

Here’s how the perk works and how you might take advantage of it, too.

Visa’s Partnership With GigSky: How It Works

Most newer smartphones now support eSIM technology, which replaces the physical SIM cards I used to hunt down at a tabac when I studied abroad in France nearly a decade ago. It’s a much smoother experience, as there’s no need to swap out your SIM card (or lose access to your regular number) every time you travel internationally.

Instead, you can download the GigSky app (iOS, Android), purchase a data plan in minutes, and connect as soon as you land.

Visa has a partnership with GigSky, the data-only eSIM app that provides coverage in more than 175 countries. Its coverage likely spans nearly every destination, no matter where you’re visiting. Data plan prices vary depending on the length of your trip and your needs.

GigSky Visa Benefits
Scroll down on the home screen to find the Visa partnership banner. Image Credit: GigSky

Every 365 days, Visa Infinite and Visa Signature cardholders can redeem 1 complimentary GigSky data plan:

  • Visa Infinite cards: 3GB, 15-day complimentary plan, and 30% off all plans
  • Visa Signature cards: 1GB, 15-day complimentary plan, and 20% off all plans

There’s another separate but important perk, Visa Destinations, which lets you score an unlimited data plan in participating countries. (GigSky says this list will be continually expanded and that your Visa benefit will automatically be updated to include them.)

If you have a Visa Infinite card, you actually get 7 days of unlimited data annually, while Visa Signature cardholders receive 3 days annually in these destinations at the time of writing:

  • 2026 World Cup host countries: U.S., Mexico, and Canada (from April 1 to July 31, 2026)
  • France
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom
  • Thailand
Bottom Line:

Whether you haven’t used your annual data allotment yet or your travel plans happen to line up with one of the eligible Visa Destinations, you likely already have a credit card that can unlock free international data.

How I’m Using the GigSky Benefit on My France Trip

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card is a Visa Signature card, which means I can take full advantage of these perks on my upcoming 8-day trip to Paris and Nice.

GigSky App Visa
Add your card number, and you’ll be able to redeem free data plans. Image Credit: GigSky

I’ll start with the 3-day unlimited data benefit as I’m visiting France, a participating Visa Destination. Then I’ll switch to activating my complimentary 15-day plan, which includes up to 1GB of data for the remainder of my trip.

For my roughly weeklong trip, that should be more than enough to cover everything I’ll need from a data plan. But if I end up needing more than 1GB, I’ll still come out ahead, as the partnership also gives me 20% off additional data plans.

Realistically, I’ll only need to top off a few dollars, which is a huge savings compared to what international plans typically cost through carriers like Verizon or AT&T.

Hot Tip:

I used 150,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points, transferring 60,000 to Air France-KLM Flying Blue for 2 round-trip economy flights and 90,000 to World of Hyatt for 4 hotel nights. I booked the rest of my hotels through Chase Travel with my Chase Sapphire Preferred card to earn 5x points (and save $50 with the annual hotel credit!). Ultimately, the 75,000-point welcome offer helped me build up my points balance rather quickly.

What Happens if You Have Multiple Visa Credit Cards?

If you’re an Upgraded Points reader, there’s a good chance you already have more than 1 eligible Visa card in your wallet.

I don’t have any Visa Infinite cards, but I have many Visa Signature cards. And that actually works in my favor, as GigSky confirms that “each eligible card carries its own benefit” (Source: GigSky).

In other words, if you have multiple Visa Infinite or Visa Signature cards, you can redeem each benefit separately.

In my case, I have 7 Visa Signature cards issued by Chase and Wells Fargo. Though I used my first allotment on my Chase Sapphire Preferred card, I can also tap into my Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card, Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, Chase Freedom Unlimited®, Ink Business Unlimited® Credit Card, Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card, and, yes, even my Prime Visa.

Once every 365 days, I can activate multiple 15-day international data plans, each with up to 1GB of data. Altogether, that gives me a solid lineup of backup plans that can easily cover my international trips throughout 2026.

Here’s a preview of some of the most popular Visa Infinite and Visa Signature cards you may already have that are eligible for this GigSky promotion.

Best Visa Infinite Cards for Travel

These Visa Infinite cards all waive foreign transaction fees and earn valuable points that can be used to book flights or hotels at a fraction of the cost through transfer partners.
