Ultra-low-cost Frontier Airlines is doubling down on Chicago and Houston by reintroducing flights from the cities’ secondary airports.
Chicago-Midway (MDW) and Houston-Hobby (HOU) airports will welcome the return of the carrier from April 28, 2022, and May 26, 2022, respectively.
“We’re excited to strengthen our position in two of the five largest metro areas in the country with 13 new routes and two additional airport options for our customers flying to or from Chicago or Houston,” said Daniel Shurz, Senior Vice President of Commercial at Frontier Airlines.
Let’s take a look at these exciting new routes.
Frontier Returns to Chicago-Midway and Houston-Hobby
Both Chicago-Midway and Houston-Hobby used to be served by Frontier.
The new routes are predominantly to popular warm-weather vacation spots across the U.S.
New Routes From Chicago-Midway (MDW)
Frontier will be up against some tough competition at Chicago’s Midway Airport (MDW). The airport is a super-hub for rival low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines, which already operates to all of Frontier’s new routes with the exception of Trenton (TTN).
These are the 10 new routes:
Atlanta (ATL) — daily from April 28, 2022
Dallas (DFW) — daily from April 28, 2022
Denver (DEN) — daily from April 28, 2022
Fort Lauderdale (FLL) — daily from October 13, 2022
Las Vegas (LAS) — daily from April 28, 2022
Ontario (ONT) — daily from April 28, 2022
Orlando (MCO) — daily from October 13, 2022
Phoenix (PHX) — daily from April 28, 2022
Tampa (TPA) — daily from April 28, 2022
Trenton (TTN) — 4 times weekly from April 29, 2022
Atlanta (ATL), Dallas (DFW), Denver (DEN), Las Vegas (LAS), Ontario (ONT), Orlando (MCO), Phoenix (PHX), and Tampa (TPA) are also served by Frontier from nearby Chicago O’Hare (ORD).
New Routes From Houston-Hobby (HOU)
Down in southern Texas, Frontier will return to Houston-Hobby (HOU) with 3 new routes to popular vacation spots.
Hobby (HOU) is once again a hub for Southwest, which also already operates on each of the following new Frontier routes from the airport:
Cancún (CUN) — 3 times weekly from May 26, 2022
Las Vegas (LAS) — 4 times weekly from May 27, 2022
Orlando (MCO) — 4 times weekly from May 27, 2022
While Vegas and Orlando are confirmed, the route to Cancún (CUN) is pending government approval.
Each of the routes is also already served by Frontier from Houston’s George Bush Airport (IAH).
Despite the direct competition, the airline is confident that these new routes will be a success, and create new travel options for those living in the Chicago and Houston metro areas.
“This strategic announcement situates Frontier to capture strong existing demand and stimulate new traffic with affordable fares and convenient service,” said Shurz.
At first glance, 13 new routes sound like a big expansion. However, Frontier already operates 11 of them from airports that are less than 30 miles away.
With the additional competition of Southwest, which dominates both Chicago-Midway (MDW) and Houston-Hobby (HOU), it’s a wonder how successful these new routes could be.
