Two of South America’s largest airlines are broadening their codeshare agreement to improve connectivity across the Americas, including Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.

Brazilian carrier GOL and Colombian flag carrier Avianca will add 6 new codeshare routes starting on June 3, 2025. This development will enhance connectivity between the 2 carriers and facilitate easier travel for passengers.

Let’s take a look at the details.

GOL and Avianca’s 6 New Codeshare Routes

Avianca and GOL are building on their existing network of codeshare routes by introducing 6 more that will connect the U.S. and San Juan (SJU) with São Paulo (GRU) via Medellin (MDE), as reported by Aeroroutes.

The routes, all sharing Medellin as a common destination, are as follows:

  • Medellin to Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
  • Medellin to Miami (MIA)
  • Medellin to New York (JFK)
  • Medellin to Orlando (MCO)
  • Medellin to San Juan (SJU)
  • Medellin to São Paulo (GRU)

The new codeshare routes will be particularly appealing to passengers looking for cheaper travel between the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Brazil.

The codeshare fares through Medellin appear to be unavailable at this time, but we anticipate that prices for routes connecting the 2 continents with a stop in Medellin will be considerably lower than those for nonstop options.

What Are the Benefits of Avianca and GOL’s New Codeshare Routes?

Since 2022, the Abra Group, a single company, has owned Avianca and GOL, enabling them to easily introduce new codeshare routes.

The partnership brings with it 2 main benefits for travelers. The first benefit is that passengers on connecting Avianca and GOL flights have the ability to check their bags to their final destination, even though they are on different airlines.

Secondly, Avianca Lifemiles members will be able to earn Lifemiles when flying GOL, so long as they’re marketed by Avianca. Similarly, frequent GOL flyers with a Smiles account can earn Gol Smiles miles on GOL-marketed Avianca flights.

Hot Tip:

If you have American Airlines status and have plans to book flights to Brazil, you might want to consider choosing GOL. The Brazilian airline and American Airlines have a partnership, which means AAdvantage elites enjoy some perks and benefits when flying GOL.

Final Thoughts

When the new codeshare routes go live in June, travelers looking to fly between the U.S. and Brazil and other destinations will have a (hopefully) cheaper, 1-stop option via Medellin to select from.

The new routes are also great for Avianca and GOL frequent flyers, who will now have 6 new ways to earn miles for the airlines’ respective loyalty programs.
