A Brazilian low-cost airline that you might never have heard of will start nonstop flights between New York (JFK) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG) this July.

The airline is GOL, and the route marks the start of its expansion into long-haul international flying, thanks to the arrival of up to 5 Airbus A330-900 aircraft, which are set to be delivered soon.

“With the introduction of widebody operations, we are taking another step forward in our evolution — expanding our horizons and creating new products and services for our customers,” said Celso Ferrer, CEO at GOL.

Here’s everything we know so far about this exciting new route.

New Nonstop to Rio from JFK Coming Soon

GOL’s first flight to New York’s JFK will take to the skies for the first time on July 8, 2026, and will operate until October 22. Fights from JFK to Rio’s Galeão Airport are planned for Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, returning to JFK on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with the following schedule:

  • Depart New York (JFK) 11 p.m. — Arrive Rio de Janeiro (GIG) 9:55 a.m. (+1)
  • Depart Rio de Janeiro (GIG) 9:55 p.m. — Arrive New York (JFK) 6:55 a.m. (+1)

When the route starts, it will be operated by leased Wamos aircraft, likely the Airbus A330.

GOL will be the only airline to offer nonstop flights between the 2 cities during this period, as American and Delta‘s seasonal services end in March.

The timing for this historic announcement is significant for 2 reasons. This year, GOL will celebrate 25 years of service, and 2026 is set to be the biggest year for tourism that Brazil, and more specifically, Rio de Janeiro, has ever seen.

The so-called “cidade mais linda” (most beautiful city) has already received 17% more international visitors in 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.1

JFK will be the first of a handful of new long-haul destinations GOL plans to serve. Nonstop services from Rio to European cities like Lisbon, London, and Paris could be announced very soon.

Booking Options for GOL’s Nonstop Flights to JFK

Despite being founded as a low-cost airline, the lowest round-trip Classic Fare of $1,306 (including a checked bag) I found for GOL’s new route to JFK is in line with what mainline carriers, such as American Airlines, charge.

In fact, that’s more expensive than American’s cheapest round-trip Main Cabin fare that includes a checked bag, which you can readily find for $1,157.

Alternatively, GOL’s Light fare that doesn’t include a checked bag saves $65 in each direction, bringing the total down to $1,176.

GOL will offer 2 business class fares. It’s not yet clear whether its yet-to-be-delivered Airbus will feature lie-flat beds. However, the Wamos-operated aircraft that will start the route does feature lie-flat seats in business class.

The fare details state “Executive Seat selection,” access to GOL’s lounges in Rio, and “Premium” inflight service. At an additional cost of around $2,000 each way, these fares don’t fit in with the classic low-cost business model.

As it stands, it’s currently only possible to book a ticket on GOL’s New York route via the airline’s website. However, American Airlines and GOL have a partnership that allows AAdvantage miles to be used to redeem GOL flights. No information has been released about this yet, but it’s likely that miles will be redeemable on this route in the future.

Hot Tip:

Thanks to a partnership between American Airlines and GOL, AAdvantage status holders also enjoy reciprocal perks and benefits when flying the Brazilian carrier. Ryan Smith, Upgraded Points’ news managing editor, was impressed with his experience when flying GOL as an AAdvantage Platinum Pro status holder.

Final Thoughts

Whether it’s a coincidence or excellent planning, GOL’s new nonstop route to JFK will launch at a time when Rio de Janeiro is expected to attract more foreign visitors than ever.

Given that GOL will be the only airline operating the route during the summer season in the U.S., it should have no problem filling its seats on its inaugural long-haul route.
