My family stood on the beach at the Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach Oceanfront when a Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral — and my stash of Hilton Honors points helped us get there.

I booked 2 nights in Cocoa Beach to align with a rocket launch in September 2026. The points redemption value wasn’t impressive, but we got great value from our stay at this approachable oceanfront hotel.

We Started Our Orlando Trip Early to See a Rocket Launch

We had a family road trip to Florida planned for September, with a little over a week at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Cocoa Beach wasn’t originally a part of the itinerary, but we added a couple of days to the beginning of our trip when I realized our dates almost lined up with a scheduled rocket launch.

I checked the Space Coast launch schedule for launches scheduled during our visit because the Space Coast is only about an hour away from Orlando. We were lucky on a previous trip to catch a satellite launch during a Cocoa Beach day trip, and I’m always keen to repeat that experience.

There was a crewed launch to the International Space Station scheduled about 2 days before we planned to arrive in Orlando (MCO), so I immediately adjusted our plans to be in Cocoa Beach for the launch. The original crewed launch was delayed after I booked the Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach, but a Falcon 9 satellite launch took its place on the following day, so we kept our plans.

A sign in the lobby displayed the launch time.

Launches are never guaranteed, but I figured if we didn’t actually get to see a rocket launch, we’d at least have some quality time on the beach.

Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach Checked All the Boxes

I had 3 major criteria for this booking. The property had to be bookable on points, have beachfront access, and allow dogs. Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach met all those needs and exceeded my expectations with a pool bar, an arcade, and resort-like, on-site dining.

Beachfront Access Made Launch Viewing Easy

A beach day with a rocket launch in the middle of it was my target, and that’s exactly what we got at Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach.

We enjoyed sunny days on the beach and a clear view of the rocket launch.

Beachfront access was key because I wanted to see the launch from the beach. There are many ways to see a Cape Canaveral rocket launch, including viewing areas that offer a closer look and better sound than the hotel’s beachfront. But for this trip and launch, I didn’t want to pay for a viewing area, arrive early, drive and deal with parking, wonder about where we’d get food or use the restroom, or be in a crowd under the hot sun.

At the hotel, all we had to do was walk out the hotel’s boardwalk onto the beach and look up during the launch.

It was so easy to see (and hear) the launch from the hotel’s beachfront. We grabbed a pizza to go from The Starlite for lunch, set up our beach umbrella and chairs, then splashed around in the water until launch time.

The beachfront access was good for enjoying the water, too. Although the launch was the main reason we booked the hotel, it only occupied a few minutes during our visit. I wanted to stay at a property where we would be in a good spot to see the launch but could also enjoy beach time and other amenities.

We Could Bring Our Dog

With our dog along for the ride, we needed a pet-friendly property. I considered the Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront for this stay, but dogs aren’t allowed there, so we went with the Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach. We paid a $75 fee for 2 nights (it’s $75 for 1 to 4 nights), and the pet policy was reasonable.

She wasn’t allowed in the dining area, pool, boardwalk, fitness center, or beach, so she could basically be in our room, the parking lot, or walking through the lobby to get to the grassy area out front for potty breaks. We were given a door tag to alert staff that we had a dog in our room, and we could leave her unattended there as long as she wasn’t noisy or destructive. A crate wasn’t required, but we used one, and she did great.

I Redeemed 123,000 Hilton Points

I used 123,000 Hilton Honors points to cover 2 nights, and the cash price would have been $600.72, including taxes and fees. I got about 0.48 cents per point, which is just under our 0.50-cent valuation for Hilton Honors points.

I would have liked to get more value from my points, but I wasn’t chasing maximum value for this redemption. This was a $600 expense I didn’t have to add to our vacation budget. This hotel, on these exact dates, with beachfront access and the ability to bring our dog, was what mattered most. I was happy to have points available for it, because we might have skipped the whole thing had it not been for the award nights.

We still had some cash expenses during our stay, including $20 per night for parking, the $75 pet fee, and food and beverages, but I had credits to help cover them. The $50 quarterly Hilton credit I get with my Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card covered all of the parking costs and part of the pet fee. The Hilton Honors Gold status I get from my Hilton Surpass card gave us $10 in daily credit for food and beverages per adult, which mostly covered our breakfast.

The Hotel Was Better Than I Expected

This midtier hotel had many resort-like amenities, including on-site dining, direct beach access, outdoor games, an updated fitness center, and an arcade, but it felt more practical than a typical resort. We could bring our dog, our room had a minifridge and microwave, and food and beverage prices were reasonable.

We Had a Room With a View

We were upgraded to a room with a beach-view balcony on the fifth floor, and it was roomy with useful details that made our stay easier. We had enough space for 5 people and a dog, along with room to store all our bags and hang up wet swimsuits.

We Had Plenty of Food and Drink Options

Hilton Garden Inn has a full-service restaurant, The Starlite, which is connected to bars in the lobby and on the pool deck. A lobby shop serves coffee, pastries, ice cream, and snacks.

We ate breakfast from The Starlite both mornings, and I was delighted to see $10 breakfast dishes on the menu for Gold and Diamond members — the exact amount of our daily food and beverage credit. Our options were French toast, a bacon-and-egg croissant sandwich with breakfast potatoes, or a breakfast platter with our choice of eggs and bread.

Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach Oceanfront food and beverages Gold and Diamond $10 breakfast
I was happy with our nearly-free breakfast choices.

I felt the $10 dishes were a good value for full plates of hot eggs and breakfast potatoes — not a sad continental pastry-and-fruit breakfast.

There wasn’t food service on the beach, but the pool bar made it easy to grab a pizza to go on launch day, and the service was fast.

It Had Resort-Like Amenities

The pool was small, but it had plenty of loungers, outdoor games, and a covered seating area. The pool bar added convenience.

The front desk had a stash of colorful beach towels (and a clipboard to check them in and out). Front desk staff encouraged us to borrow pool toys from the towel spot and said they had more in storage if we had needed anything else.

The beach boardwalk was larger than I expected. It had 2 walkways down to the beach (with a rinse shower), a covered seating area, and benches perfect for relaxing and watching the waves without getting in the sand.

Our kids loved the arcade, which was small but entertaining with air hockey, racing games, and Foo Fighters pinball.

The fitness center had multiple cardio machines, including a Peloton bike and a rower, an adjustable weight machine, and a large rack of dumbbells.

Late Checkout Gave Us a Long Morning at the Beach

We asked for a late checkout, and we were able to stay until 1 p.m. instead of the usual 11 a.m. That gave us a leisurely morning of breakfast, packing up, and another hour or so on the beach before heading out.

Bottom Line:

I walked away from this hotel thinking we may have found our family’s just-right fit of practicality and amenities in the Hilton Garden Inn brand. We had a significantly better stay at this hotel than at the Hilton Galveston Island Resort earlier this year.

Spending 2 Nights Made It a Real Vacation

I always feel like we’re too short on time to enjoy the beaches and Florida’s natural wonders during Orlando road trips. We often spend a single night in Pensacola before we get back on the road. Day trips to Cocoa Beach are quick jaunts to see rocket launches and take a walk on the beach, or visit Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and then get back to Orlando the same day.

This time, we spent 2 nights in Cocoa Beach and had a whole day and a long morning at the beach. In addition to the rocket launch, we had time to do an after-dark excursion to see bioluminescent algae, see manatees at the Haulover Canal, and visit the flagship Ron Jon Surf Shop. We also squeezed in a quintessential Florida experience: enjoying a picnic of Pub Subs from the Publix deli on the boardwalk.

Final Thoughts

I used 123,000 points to arrive in Florida in a big way with a rocket launch and days at the beach — and I didn’t have to spend $600 to do it. The Hilton Garden Inn Cocoa Beach was comfortable, with resort-like amenities, and we’d be happy to visit again.
