Hotel News

Maasai Sue Marriott Over Planned Ritz-Carlton Resort

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that leaders of the Maasai ethnic group in Kenya have filed a lawsuit against Marriott, seeking to demolish the new Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp, which opened this past August. The lawsuit says the safari camp blocks a key route of the Serengeti migration, hindering wildebeest and other animals from finding food.

Marriott declined to comment on the suit, but the company that owned the camp said, according to the Journal, that it had gotten approval from Kenyan authorities.

The case is going forward to court. We’ll be following this closely.

Marriott Reaches 100 Hotel Milestone in Saudi Arabia

Marriott this week announced that it had hit a milestone of 100 open and pipeline hotels in Saudi Arabia. This comes after the signing of the Courtyard by Marriott Makkah Masar in Makkah, which is set to open in 2030.

The hotel will offer 1,100 guest rooms and suites, several dining options, a ballroom, a fitness centre, a kids’ club, and retail offerings.

Equinox Hotels Announces Resort in Anguilla

Equinox announced its new project in the Caribbean: Equinox Resort Anguilla Port Nimara. The resort will feature 62 rooms, including 18 oceanfront villas, 18 villas, and 35 residences. Amenities will include, of course, an Equinox Club, an all-day dining restaurant, a spa, and luxury shopping.

There will be stiff competition in the luxury sector in Anguilla, which is home to resorts such as Zemi Beach House, LXR Hotels & Resorts.

Final Thoughts

It was yet another busy week across the hotel industry, with several hotels opening in exciting destinations, including in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and adjacent to a golf course in Brussels. There was also a flurry of important news, including a lawsuit against a new Ritz-Carlton camp in the Masai Mara and a new Equinox resort set to open in Anguilla.

As always, we’ll be back here next week with more hotel industry news.
