How I Used a No-Annual-Fee IHG Card To Book My Family’s Spring Break

Welcome offers for credit cards always sound impressive. But what really matters is what they can actually do for a trip you’re planning.

With an upcoming spring break vacation with my wife and our 3 daughters, I knew we’d need to earn more points. That’s what pushed me to consider an IHG co-branded card — and the elevated welcome offer on the $0-annual-fee IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card helped make booking our hotel rooms much more manageable.

IHG One Rewards Traveler Card Overview

The IHG One Rewards Traveler Credit Card is a hotel card that’s easy to keep in the long term, because of its $0 annual fee — but it still pulls its weight when it comes to benefits.

You earn up to 17 total points per $1 when staying at IHG Hotels & Resorts, which adds up fast if you have paid stays coming up. Beyond hotel bookings, the card also pulls its weight for everyday spending, earning 3 points per $1 on gas, dining, and monthly bills, and 2 points per $1 on everything else.

Where this card really gets interesting, though, is the automatic IHG Silver Elite status. This introductory elite status level gets you bonus points on paid stays and the occasional late checkout when available, but the real value lies in the fourth-night-free benefit on award stays. If you book 4 consecutive nights using points, the fourth night automatically costs zero points.

It’s not a luxury credit card loaded with bells and whistles, but that’s kind of the point. The IHG Traveler card is a straightforward, low-maintenance way to earn IHG points and unlock real savings on hotel stays, particularly if you like booking multiple-night trips with points.

IHG One Rewards Traveler Card’s Elevated Welcome Offer

Until March 18, 2026, the IHG Traveler card has an elevated welcome offer of up to 120,000 IHG One Rewards points after you meet the minimum spending requirements:

  • Earn 90,000 bonus points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months.
  • Earn up to 30,000 bonus points by earning an additional 3x on purchases, except on IHG Hotels & Resorts, in the first 6 months from account opening on up to $10,000 spent.

That’s a substantial number of points, especially considering this is a $0-annual-fee card. Depending on the property and travel dates, earning the full 120,000 points can cover multiple hotel nights, particularly at midtier IHG brands or by taking advantage of the fourth-night-free perk.

IHG Rewards Loyalty Program Review

For many IHG properties in Europe, award nights can fall in the range of 25,000 to 60,000 points per night, meaning this bonus offer alone could help cover a meaningful portion of a multiple-night stay.

Hot Tip:

We value IHG One Rewards points at about 0.5 cents each, which puts the current welcome offer at $600. But that’s just the starting number, and it’s possible to get even more value from that — as seen below.

Maximizing 120,000 IHG One Rewards Points

The city of Nice checked every box for our upcoming spring break plans. It’s an easy, central base in France with a major airport, great train connections, and quick access to classic Riviera day trips like Monaco, Cannes, and gorgeous beach towns like Villefranche-sur-Mer and Antibes, so we can explore the coast without constantly changing hotels.

For this trip, I booked the Crowne Plaza Nice – Grand Arenas, with rates starting at 25,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

The 25,000-point award nights plus the fourth-night-free perk made this a fantastic-value base for our family. Image Credit: IHG

Thanks to the fourth-night-free benefit, essentially, I only pay for 3 of the 4 nights on an award stay:

  • 25,000 points × 3 nights: 75,000 points total
  • Effective cost: 18,750 points per night instead of 25,000 points per night

I used this bonus offer to book 2 connecting rooms — 1 for me, my wife, and our toddler, and another for my twin middle-schoolers. And this isn’t just a basic room. The standard award room here includes a king bed plus a sofa bed and allows 3 guests, which perfectly covers me, my wife, and our toddler.

For my twin daughters, I’m booking a second room the exact same way. I still have 45,000 points left from the welcome offer, so I’ll transfer the 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points I need to top off my IHG account and secure another 4-night stay for 75,000 points.

That means for 150,000 total points, I’m covering 2 rooms for 4 nights on the French Riviera.

Cash rates for these rooms start around $150 per night, so we saved roughly $1,200 by using our IHG points instead. The IHG Traveler card unlocked this spring break trip for us, thanks to its fourth-night-free perk, allowing me to save a significant chunk of cash while still staying in a comfortable, family-friendly hotel in Nice.

Final Thoughts

The IHG Traveler card doesn’t always get the spotlight, but a higher-than-usual welcome offer of up to 120,000 points (ending March 18, 2026) is seriously impressive. The way I look at it, this isn’t a bonus offer for a quick overnight, it’s a tool to help fund a real trip. In my case, it covers a large portion of our family’s hotel stay on the French Riviera.
