KLM, the Dutch flag carrier, is bringing free, high-speed Wi-Fi to its long-haul flights.

The airline has chosen Starlink to provide the service, which should start in mid-2027 and be available in every cabin. You’ll need a Flying Blue account to connect, and the good news is that the service will be free.

Unfortunately, not every plane will have Starlink on day one. Let’s dig into the details to see how this will improve the customer experience on KLM flights.

KLM announced the news on its 107th anniversary. Starting in mid-2027, passengers on intercontinental flights will get free onboard Starlink Wi-Fi that’s fast enough to stream movies, play games, and listen to music. The service will be available to all passengers in all cabins.

“We are making a long-standing wish of our passengers a reality,” KLM CEO Marjan Rintel said.

There are 2 limitations worth noting, though. First, the Wi-Fi is only free for Flying Blue members. Joining costs nothing, and KLM says you can sign up before your flight or through the onboard portal during it in order to access the service.

Second, the timeline for implementation is vague. KLM says the rollout will happen in phases and free Wi-Fi will only work on equipped aircraft. The airline hasn’t said which planes are getting Starlink first or when the full long-haul fleet will carry the service. Even after planes start flying with the updated Wi-Fi, your particular flight might not have it for a while.

At present, nothing is changing for passengers. Flying Blue members currently get free messaging on intercontinental flights, but anything more requires purchasing a paid Wi-Fi pass to check emails or access streaming services.

This follows KLM’s launch of free Wi-Fi on European flights on January 22. That service runs through Viasat, not Starlink, and KLM says it now covers most of its European fleet.

Hot Tip:

Learn more about airplane Wi-Fi, including how it works and costs to use it on various airlines.

Starlink is the satellite internet service from SpaceX. It relies on more than 9,000 satellites that orbit close to Earth, far lower than the satellites behind older inflight Wi-Fi systems. This setup is known as low earth orbit, or LEO for short. Less distance means less lag when using the internet. Starlink also covers oceans and remote routes, which matters a lot on a 10-hour flight that had gaps in service in years past.

KLM is far from the first airline to promise the revolutionary service to its customers.

Sister airline Air France started installing Starlink in 2025 with the goal of equipping its entire fleet by the end of 2026, and it’s also free with a Flying Blue account. Elsewhere in Europe, IAG signed a deal promising Starlink on more than 500 planes across British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and its other airlines. Lufthansa Group plans to outfit roughly 850 aircraft by 2029.

To the east, Emirates is targeting 232 wide-body planes by mid-2027.

U.S. airlines are moving quickly to keep up. United offers Starlink for free to MileagePlus members, and Alaska Airlines does the same for Atmos members. Southwest wants to add it to more than 300 planes by the end of this year, and American will install it on more than 500 narrow-body jets in early 2027.

Delta and JetBlue have bucked Starlink for Amazon’s rival service.

Most of these airlines use the same pattern: Starlink’s high-speed Wi-Fi is free, but you have to join the loyalty program first to get access.

Final Thoughts

Free Starlink Wi-Fi on long-haul flights is great news for KLM passengers, though mid-2027 is still a ways away and the timeline for the rollout is unclear. Use of the service will require a Flying Blue account, but joining is free, and having an account already unlocks Wi-Fi on KLM’s equipped European flights.

With so many airlines making the same move regarding inflight internet, paying for slow Wi-Fi that stops working over the ocean could soon be a thing of the past.
