Tomorrow, May 6, will finally usher in Lufthansa’s FOX (Future Onboard Experience) — the airline’s most extensive overhaul of its onboard service in years.

After debuting in first class back in March, the revamp now reaches business, premium economy, and economy cabins on every long-haul flight, regardless of aircraft type or whether the plane has the new Allegris seats installed.

Here’s more on Lufthansa’s new FOX experience and what you can expect in each cabin.

What Is FOX, and Should We Be Excited?

FOX is to Lufthansa what Senses is to SWISS: a complete rethink of the onboard experience from the front of the plane to the back. Timed to the airline’s 100th anniversary, it’s one of the largest customer experience investments in Lufthansa’s history — over €70 million this year alone, per CEO Jens Ritter.

The initiative is built around 3 principles: personalization, comfort, and what Lufthansa calls “Signature Moments.” These touches are meant to be unmistakably Lufthansa and not just a “better” product.

The scale is staggering. New tableware and cutlery alone involves replacing 187 million individual pieces, including roughly 300,000 business class main course plates. The new service was tested across more than 110 flights, incorporated 9,000+ guest feedback responses, and was previewed at 28 menu presentations across 57 airports.

Hot Tip:

This launch is all about timing. The launch of FOX coincides with the Lufthansa’s centenary being celebrated this year.

First Class: Already Live

First class passengers have been enjoying FOX since late March. Highlights include a tasting menu curated by 2-Michelin-star chef Christoph Kunz of Munich’s KOMU, an upgraded caviar service with blinis and a mother-of-pearl spoon, and Veuve Clicquot’s La Grande Dame as a permanent second Champagne option. For the full breakdown, see our first class dining piece.

Business Class

Business class is where the culinary investment shows up most. New menus come from Johann Lafer, who already designs Lufthansa’s short-haul dishes. Guests can preorder breakfast the night before from options like smoothies, French toast, and omelets. A new “Sky Selection” feature lets passengers order their second meal on demand — from options like tapas bowls, currywurst, and macarons — whenever hunger strikes.

As a Signature Moment, there’s now a classic cake-and-coffee service on board.

Add in entirely new tableware and BABOR amenity kits launching this month, and business class gets one of the more thorough upgrades in the rollout.

Premium Economy

Premium economy receives a noticeable lift. The first meal service now opens with a business class-level appetizer, 3 hot main course choices, and fresh, warm bread. Pastries or cake follow. Drink service comes more often with greater variety, including a new digestif service.

Travelers also receive cozy slippers — a touch of comfort that premium economy passengers haven’t typically seen on Lufthansa.

Economy Class

Economy sees some of the most surprising changes. For the first time, economy passengers will receive an amenity kit with a sleep mask and earplugs. Tableware, cutlery, and trays are all new, and there’s a printed menu. The drink list expands, as well.

And on flights over 10 hours, passengers choose from 3 hot main courses instead of 2 — an upgrade for anyone who’s ever been stuck with the “what’s left”option the other passengers didn’t want.

Final Thoughts

FOX is Lufthansa’s serious bet to claim the title of Europe’s premium airline, and on paper, the rollout looks comprehensive.

The economy upgrades are particularly notable. Amenity kits, an extra hot meal option, and modernized service elements add up to a real improvement in the cabin most passengers actually fly.

Whether the execution holds up across hundreds of daily long-haul flights is the big question. Given the rocky rollout of the Allegris hard product, here’s hoping FOX lands more cleanly.

Either way, starting tomorrow, every Lufthansa long-haul passenger should notice a difference.
