If you didn’t already know, Marriott has had a partnership with Uber since 2021, allowing you to earn Marriott points on all your Uber rides. Now, Marriott is updating the way you’ll earn points. It’s mostly negative, though you’ll now be able to earn points on eligible Uber X Reserve rides that you make. There’s also a new elite status angle to consider.

Let’s take a look at what’s changing.

Earn Marriott Points With Uber

You’ve long been able to earn Marriott Bonvoy points on your Uber purchases, with the ability to earn the most rewards when actually staying at a Marriott. Here’s the current earning structure:

  • Earn 3x points per $1 spent on Uber Premium rides (Uber XL, Uber Black, Uber SUV, Uber Comfort)
  • Earn 6x points per $1 spent on Uber Eats when staying at a Marriott hotel
  • Earn 2x points per $1 spent on Uber Eats elsewhere

Note that these promotions only apply within the United States. You can also see that standard Uber X rides don’t earn you any Marriott points.

Starting October 14, 2024, the earning structure will change:

  • Earn 3x points per $1 spent on Uber Premium rides (no change)
  • Earn 2x points per $1 spent on Uber X rides that you reserve in advance
  • Earn 2x points per $1 spent on Uber Eats orders when staying at Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, and Element Hotels
  • Earn 1x point per $1 spent on Uber Eats elsewhere

Those who have an Uber One annual plan will also receive Silver Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy.

Hot Tip:

If you’ve never linked your Marriott and Uber accounts before, there are regular promotions offering bonus points when you link them for the first time.

Is This Good?

These are fairly negative changes overall. While it’s nice that you’ll now be able to earn points on Uber X rides using the reserve feature, that doesn’t outweigh the loss of earnings elsewhere. Plus, anyone who’s reserved rides before knows that you pay a premium for the service; prices are often greatly escalated compared to requesting an immediate ride.

You’ll also note that the rate for Uber Eats orders has dropped significantly. You’ll now only get 1x point per $1 spent unless you’re staying at certain Marriott properties, in which case you’ll get 2x. Considering the current structure offers a minimum of 2x and awards up to 6x points when you’re staying at any Marriott hotel, that represents a pretty big devaluation.

Silver Elite status isn’t much to write home about either, especially since many travelers already have Gold Elite status as a benefit from a credit card.

Bottom Line:

Marriott and Uber have a partnership offering Marriott points on Uber rides and Uber Eats orders. Starting October 14, 2024, the points earning rates are changing — mostly for the worse.

Final Thoughts

While the Uber and Marriott partnership will continue to exist, it’s doing so at a reduced rate. Starting October 14, 2024, the number of points you’ll earn on your Uber Eats purchases is dropping significantly. While you’ll also be able to earn points on Uber X Reserve rides — and those who have Uber One annual plans will get Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status — that doesn’t quite make up for the loss.
