Thanks to Marriott’s new online points transfer tool, moving points between accounts is now easier than ever. This is an excellent update to the program, as you previously had to call Marriott’s customer service to transfer points to another member.

Let’s go over how the new tool works!

Marriott Releases Online Points Transfer Tool

To get started, log in with your credentials to Marriott’s new points transfer website. Then, you’ll need to enter the recipient’s details, including:

  • Recipient’s first and last name
  • Recipient’s Marriott Bonvoy number
  • Amount you want transfer (you must transfer in increments of 1,000, and you can only transfer a maximum of 100,000 points per year)

Hot Tip: Combining points with friends or family members can be a strategic move as you’ll be able to use those points to book Marriott hotels. Read through our guide on the best ways to redeem your Marriott Bonvoy points for maximum value!

Once you confirm your details and submit the request, your transfer will process within 24 hours. While it isn’t immediate, you’ll avoid having to speak with someone over the phone. Here are some of the other details you should know:

  • The maximum number of points you can receive per year is capped at 500,000 points.
  • Points transfers can’t be done with new Marriott accounts — your account must have been opened for 30 days with qualifying activity in order to participate in points transfers (or 90 days without qualifying activity).
  • There’s still no fee to transfer points, making Marriott’s point transfers one of the most generous programs out there.

When Should You Transfer Points?

Since Marriott doesn’t charge for points transfers, it can make a lot of sense to combine points with other members. Here are a couple of scenarios where points transfers might come in handy:

  • Topping up your account to earn more Marriott Bonvoy points for a larger redemption, such as getting your fifth night free on award stays.
  • You may wish to transfer points to a member who is a Marriott Bonvoy elite member (specifically someone who is Platinum and above who can get complimentary suite upgrades and lounge access). If you’re traveling with that person, they can redeem points for the room and reap the benefits for the guests.

Final Thoughts

It’s great that Marriott has finally made online points transfers a reality, as it makes it easier for members to consolidate points between accounts. Make sure you enter your information accurately though, as transfers to incorrect accounts can’t be reversed!
