Big news dropped today, June 6, 2026: Philippine Airlines (PAL) is officially joining the Oneworld alliance.

The announcement came via the airline’s social media channels and was formalized at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — and it’s one of the more surprising alliance developments in recent memory.

Let’s take a closer look.

Philippine Airlines Is Joining Oneworld

Let’s start with what we know for sure. Philippine Airlines will become the 16th member of the Oneworld alliance — becoming only the second full member based in Southeast Asia, joining Malaysia Airlines. This was confirmed on Philippine Airlines’ X account. The airline’s extensive domestic network across the Philippine archipelago, combined with its long-haul routes to North America, Australia, the Middle East, and across Asia, will add meaningful new connectivity for Oneworld travelers.

For PAL’s Mabuhay Miles members, the integration will eventually unlock earning and redemption across all Oneworld carriers. That’s a substantial upgrade from the airline’s previously fragmented partnership strategy. Top-tier PAL elite flyers will gain Oneworld status perks, including priority check-in, preferred boarding, extra baggage allowances, and access to more than 700 lounges worldwide.

But there’s still a lot that we don’t know. The alliance membership is expected to be finalized in 2027, but no specific date has been given. The timeline for Mabuhay Miles to be fully integrated into the Oneworld ecosystem — including when members can start earning and redeeming across partner airlines — hasn’t been announced.

There’s also the question of Starlux Airlines, the Taiwanese carrier whose CEO has repeatedly expressed interest in joining Oneworld, though the carrier remains on the outside. Whether Cathay Pacific‘s rumored veto rights played a role in that situation, and whether PAL’s admission signals any shift in how those rights are exercised, remain open questions.

Hot Tip:

Philippine Airlines recently added flights to Chicago, and it’s already possible to book these with Qatar Airways Privilege Club Avios — an early indicator that this Oneworld membership was coming.

We Suspected This Might Be Coming

Looking back, there were signs, and we wondered if these signs were pointing to a Oneworld link-up. In recent weeks, Philippine Airlines deepened its ties with 2 prominent Oneworld members. PAL “PR” flight numbers began appearing as codeshares on Qatar Airways-operated flights from the Philippines to over 20 European cities via Doha, with Qatar’s “QR” codes reciprocally appearing on some PAL domestic routes. Then, Qantas added Philippine Airlines as a Classic Rewards redemption partner, including on PAL’s domestic routes within the Philippines.

Individually, each of these moves could be explained away as routine partnership activity. Together, they read like a carrier methodically aligning itself with the alliance it was about to join.

Final Thoughts

Philippine Airlines joining Oneworld is a genuine win for travelers. The airline has historically operated without much of a cohesive global partnership structure, which has limited its appeal for frequent flyers chasing elite perks and award redemptions. Alliance membership changes that.

With full integration on the horizon, PAL becomes a far more attractive option for Oneworld elites flying to or within the Philippines — and for anyone wanting to put Mabuhay Miles to work across a wider global network. We’ll be watching closely as the 2027 timeline takes shape.
