Southwest Airlines could be preparing for one of its biggest transformations ever. Reports suggest that the airline could finally be entering the long-haul international market.

The airline, which currently operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet, is reportedly leaning toward the Boeing 787 Dreamliner as its first wide-body aircraft. This would open the doors for nonstop flights to destinations far beyond its current network.

Here’s everything we know so far.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner Could Change Everything for Southwest

According to Reuters, Southwest Airlines has been exploring entering the long-haul international market in the next 3 years. Reports suggest that the airline is looking at the possibility of adding dozens of Boeing 787 Dreamliners to its fleet, though it hasn’t yet reached a decision. The airline currently flies a single aircraft type, the Boeing 737.

Southwest has reportedly explored acquiring aircraft through the secondary market or leasing companies, which could allow it to begin international operations sooner rather than waiting for newly built jets.

This is a significant decision as Boeing’s 787 production slots are reportedly sold out through the end of the decade, making aircraft availability a major challenge.

Though the Boeing 787 seems to be the preferred aircraft, Southwest has also evaluated Airbus alternatives. Airbus has reportedly presented the A321XLR and the A330neo to the airline.

However, at this moment, it remains speculative. Southwest has not announced any aircraft order or confirmed a launch date. Its board would ultimately need to approve the fleet decision.

The timing of the potential expansion is noteworthy. Southwest CEO Bob Jordan has previously indicated that the airline does not need an extensive long-haul network like those operated by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, or United Airlines. Instead, he has mentioned that roughly 8 to 12 long-haul destinations would likely satisfy many of its customers’ travel needs.

What This Means for Travelers

Although no official decision has been made yet, this could be huge news for Southwest flyers. A Southwest long-haul operation could create numerous new opportunities to travel internationally, all while earning and redeeming points through the airline’s Rapid Rewards loyalty program.

Depending on the routes the airline eventually selects, Southwest travelers could see nonstop service connecting its major U.S. hubs with destinations across Europe and other international markets.

Passengers would also need to consider the onboard experience. Long-haul flights typically require more extensive meal service, different cabin configurations, and other passenger amenities than Southwest currently offers.

Final Thoughts

Southwest Airlines may be moving toward entering the long-haul international market. Its reported interest in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner suggests this move is more than speculation at this point. For an airline built around an all-Boeing 737 fleet, adding a wide-body aircraft would be a major shift from its established operating mode.

For now, the bigger question is not whether Southwest wants to fly farther but how quickly it can acquire the aircraft needed to do so. Additionally, whether the airline retains its familiar low-cost approach on these significantly longer journeys also remains to be seen.
