Southwest Airlines is taking its first step into the rewards debit card world. While travel credit cards are everywhere, earning points on debit purchases remains relatively rare — but that’s about to change.

The airline is teasing the launch of a Southwest Rapid Rewards® Debit Card, giving travelers a new way to earn points toward flights without using a credit card.

Here’s what we know so far.

What We Know About the Southwest Rapid Rewards Debit Card

Southwest Airlines loyalists are familiar with the airline’s co-branded credit cards that help them earn rewards and even the coveted Companion Pass, but now Southwest is stepping into the debit card space.

The teaser page offers a few hints, even if full details are still limited. The new card will be issued by Sunrise Banks and operate on the Visa debit network, with funds FDIC-insured up to $250,000. It’s already sporting Southwest’s signature red, yellow, and blue branding, making it instantly recognizable.

Southwest describes it as a debit card “that points you toward a vacay,” suggesting everyday purchases will earn Rapid Rewards points. While the airline hasn’t disclosed exact earning rates, debit card rewards are generally modest compared to credit cards.

Based on the current market for rewards debit cards, a small sign-up bonus and a potential annual or monthly fee are likely, considering what we’ve seen in the past with the launch of other airline debit cards.

This move fits a wider trend. Other airlines and hotel chains, including Wyndham and Spirit, have recently dipped their toes into debit rewards. Southwest’s offering could provide a convenient option for travelers who prefer to stick to debit while still earning points for flights — albeit, at a lesser rate than what they’d get with a Southwest credit card.

We reached out to Southwest for comment, and a spokesperson confirmed that the airline plans to launch its debit card later this year. “Southwest is launching a debit card later this year, offering customers a new way to earn Rapid Rewards points on everyday purchases,” the spokesperson said, adding that the airline will provide more details closer to the card’s official launch.

Hot Tip:

Keep in mind that debit cards usually don’t offer the same purchase protections as credit cards. If you plan to apply for Southwest’s new debit card when it becomes available, consider pairing it with a travel rewards credit card for larger purchases or travel protections.

Final Thoughts

Even with limited details, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Debit Card could be a welcome addition for frequent flyers who prefer spending from their bank account. While it likely won’t replace the value of a solid credit card, it adds flexibility and opens another path to rack up points.

We’ll be watching closely for the official launch and full terms, but Southwest fans will soon have another way to earn rewards on everyday spending.
