Spirit Airlines is undergoing a massive shakeup. The ultra-low-cost airline is completely changing its business model, introducing new fare options, boarding processes, and more. And those changes are now live.

There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get straight to it!

Spirit’s Big Changes Are Live

The biggest news is Spirit‘s launching 4 new fare bundles: Go Big, Go Comfy, Go Savvy, and Go. Here’s what’s included in each fare:

  • Go: The most basic of the new fare bundles. Passengers with Go tickets can purchase add-on options like checked bags, standard seat selection, Wi-Fi, snacks, and beverages.
  • Go Savvy: You can bring either 1 carry-on or 1 checked bag. During booking, you’ll also get standard seat selection.
  • Go Comfy: This option includes a guaranteed blocked middle seat, 1 carry-on and 1 checked bag, priority boarding, a snack, and a non-alcoholic beverage.
  • Go Big: This fare includes the Big Front Seat, snacks and drinks (including alcohol), beverages, 1 carry-on and 1 checked bag, priority check-in and boarding, and Wi-Fi.

Of the new fares, Go Big is the most noteworthy. Spirit is bundling its much-loved Big Front Seat into the fare, effectively turning it into a dedicated business-class seat.

“We are making major investments to provide our Guests with greater value and enhance their travel experience,” said Ted Christie, President and Chief Executive Officer at Spirit Airlines. “This is an excellent opportunity for new Guests and those who haven’t flown with us recently to experience our transformation and see for themselves the great value they can enjoy when choosing Spirit.”

Spirit has opened these new bundles for booking as of today, August 14, 2024.

Bottom Line:

This is a big deal for Spirit, which has historically unbundled its fares and passed on ancillary purchases like seat selection and baggage to the customer. All 4 options include the flexibility of no change or cancellation fees.

Other Updates

In addition to introducing new fare bundles, Spirit is also launching a number of passenger-friendly initiatives.

The airline will introduce priority check-in for Go Big passengers at more than 20 U.S. and international airports, including Atlanta (ATL), Cancun (CUN), and New York-LaGuardia (LGA). This benefit is also available to Free Spirit Gold and Free Spirit® Travel More World Elite Mastercard® members.

Spirit is also updating its boarding process and will now feature 5 boarding groups. Priority boarding is available for:

  • Go Big and Go Comfy passengers
  • Free Spirit Gold and Silver members
  • Free Spirit World Elite card holders
  • Active-duty U.S. service members (plus their spouses and children when traveling with the service member)

Final Thoughts

This is really surprising — but welcome news — from Spirit. The airline is adopting bundled pricing, putting it on par with full-service carriers as it shifts away from the low-cost model. Those changes are now live, and now we’ll wait to see about the airline’s promise of more colors. Yes, it’s going beyond just black and yellow.
