Many of my cards offer various credits, points, or other spending incentives, and I sometimes split a single purchase across multiple cards to use statement credits and maximize my benefits.

Here’s how you can split a purchase across multiple cards, and when it makes sense to do so.

Why I Split Transactions

Splitting transactions allows me to make the most of credits and rewards earning. For example, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express gives me a $50 credit toward Hilton hotels each quarter.

American Express Membership Rewards

This credit generally applies to the room rate and any incidentals. It’s hard to find a hotel with a $50 room rate, so that typically means spending more than $50 to use the credit.

I want to use the credit while maximizing my points earning. I only need to spend $50 to use the Amex Business Platinum card’s Hilton credit, so I charge only that amount to the card. It only earns 1 point per $1 at hotels, so I’d miss out on earning more points with my Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card if I put the full purchase on my Amex Business Platinum card.

By charging $50 to my Amex Business Platinum card and the amount over $50 to my Hilton Aspire card, I can maximize my $50 credit and rewards earning. The Hilton Aspire card also has a $200 semiannual credit that applies at Hilton resorts.

Hotels aren’t the only scenario where I split transactions. For example, my Amex Business Platinum card earns 2 Membership Rewards points on purchases of $5,000 or more (on up to $2 million in purchases per calendar year). For those transactions, I may charge the initial $5,000 and put the remainder on another card that could earn me more points.

How I Split Payments

Splitting payments requires merchant cooperation, and I’ve found hotels and restaurants the easiest to work with. At a recent Hyatt stay, I split the purchase between my Chase Sapphire Reserve® to use the annual $300 travel credit and the The World of Hyatt Credit Card to earn Hyatt points. But I haven’t been successful with splitting purchases with car rental companies.

World of Hyatt

When I use my $50 Amex Business Platinum card Hilton credit, I provide my Hilton Aspire card at check-in. When I check out, I ask the front desk to only charge $50 to my Amex Business Platinum card. I charge the rest to my Hilton Aspire card, which earns 14 Hilton Honors points per $1 spent at Hilton hotels.

Other merchants, such as brick-and-mortar retail stores, may require the entire transaction to be put on a single card. A flexible, patient cashier may handle a split transaction, but corporate policy may override the ability to use multiple cards. When I want to split the transaction amount, I’ll almost always explain why I’m doing it, and most understand — especially for large purchases.

Some online retailers allow for split payments, such as on Dell.com. In other cases, I’ll hold the purchase and call to complete the order, or place separate orders if it’s for multiple items. I don’t push the issue if splitting payments will cause frustration, especially for smaller purchases.

For large purchases, merchants tend to be more accommodating because they know larger transactions may not be approved on a single card.

One thing to keep in mind is that some purchase protection plans require putting the entire purchase amount on a single card. If you split a payment, your protection may be limited to the amount you put on that card. That said, putting all charges on a single card can also simplify refunds.

Hot Tip:

The hotel example also works if you have multiple credits on different cards. You can ask a merchant to charge 3, 4, or more cards.

Final Thoughts

I want to get the most points and credits for every dollar I spend, so I strategically put charges on different credit cards, depending on which will give me the most rewards or benefits. It can be difficult to juggle, but worth it, especially for large purchases.
