Marriott’s buzzy EDITION brand is expanding again — this time to the Motor City.

In a press release, Bedrock, a real estate company founded by billionaire Dan Gilbert, announced that it had reached an agreement with EDITION to bring a hotel and branded residences to the city’s central business district.

“EDITION’S eagerness to enter the Detroit market and introduce its first property in the Midwest is a true testament [to] how magnetic our city is today,” said Gilbert.

Here’s what you need to know about this exciting hotel news for Motown!

EDITION’s First Midwest Property Coming to Detroit

Bedrock has been busy developing a major plot of land in Downtown Detroit, known for decades as “the Hudson’s site,” as it was formerly home to a large department store called J.L. Hudson’s that was demolished in 1998.

Now known as Hudson’s Detroit, the site is home to 2 large buildings, one of which will soon become the global headquarters of General Motors and the other a 685-foot tower that is nearing the end of construction. Once complete, it will be the second-tallest building in Detroit and the entire state of Michigan.

And now, we know that The Detroit EDITION and The Residences at The Detroit EDITION will occupy the entirety of the tower’s 45 floors.

When it opens (the hotel’s opening wasn’t clear from the press release, though the condos will be available for move-in starting in 2027), The Detroit EDITION will be the city’s first 5-star hotel and will become the EDITION brand’s first location in the Midwest.

The brand currently has 19 operational properties in hot destinations around the world, including New York, Miami Beach, Rome, Tokyo, Riviera Maya, Dubai, and more.

Details are still relatively scant, but the press release states that the hotel will offer “4 diverse food and beverage outlets, a pool, a large outdoor terrace, a fitness center, spa, and more than 16,000 square feet of event space.”

Of course, when it does open, the hotel will participate in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, meaning guests can earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points for stays at the all-new property. However, pricing details have yet to be released.

The Residences at The Detroit EDITION will offer 97 condos ranging in size from 1 to 4 bedrooms with interiors from the firm Yabu Pushelberg. There will be resident-exclusive spaces throughout the building in addition to shared access to hotel amenities.

Located on the floors above The Detroit EDITION hotel, the residential units will boast amazing views of downtown Detroit’s historic skyline, the Detroit River, and across to Windsor, Ontario.

Final Thoughts

While we don’t have much information just yet, the announcement of EDITION’s plans to open a hotel and residences in Detroit is significant for the city’s revitalization and the entire Midwest region.

The city has long lacked a proper 5-star hotel, and with EDITION’s reputation for incredible bars and restaurants, this should quickly become a magnet for locals looking for a new place to hang out as well as for people visiting from out of town who desire a truly luxurious hotel in which to stay.

This is a developing story, and we’ll be sure to come back with more information as soon as we get it.
