Sometimes you don’t want a ride. You want the keys.

As of August 27, 2026, Uber is adding Zipcar to Uber Rent, meaning you can book a car by the hour directly inside the Uber app. There’s no separate Zipcar membership required, no application fee, and no trip to a rental counter.

How does it work? Let’s take a look.

How Hourly Zipcar Rentals Work on Uber

Open Rent in the Uber app, enter the time and date you need a car, and browse the Zipcars parked nearby. Rentals are available from 1 hour up to 14 days, and you can book as little as 1 hour before your trip starts.

Then, pick a car, review the details, complete identity verification, and pay through Uber. Gas is included. You unlock the car with your phone and return it when your reservation ends. Note that you need to return the Zipcar to the same spot where you picked it up, so this is designed for errands and round-trip rentals, not one-way moves.

Zipcar on Uber Rent is launching in multiple U.S. and Canadian cities, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Milwaukee, New Jersey, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, Providence, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Tampa Bay, and Washington, D.C.

Uber Rent is also expanding its car delivery service to Nashville and Jacksonville, bringing a rental straight to your home, office, or hotel.

Uber and Zipcar have partnered before, including a 2017 deal that gave Uber drivers access to cars. However, this is the first time that hourly Zipcar bookings have appeared in the consumer-facing Uber Rent marketplace.

Uber One Perks (and How To Get Them at No Extra Cost)

Uber One members earn 10% back in Uber Cash on all Uber Rent bookings, Zipcar included. The first 1,500 people to rent a Zipcar through Uber also get an extra $20 in Uber credits back.

That 10% is now the program’s strongest earning rate, which matters because Uber One just took a hit. Ride rewards dropped from 6% to 5% this month.

Uber One costs $9.99 per month or $96 per year, and you can get it for no out-of-pocket cost.

The Platinum Card® from American Express covers up to $120 per year in Uber One statement credits, wiping out the membership cost entirely. Enrollment isn’t required. Pay for a renewing membership with the card, and the credit posts to your account. Cardholders also get up to $200 in Uber Cash annually when adding the Amex Platinum card as a payment method in the Uber app. You receive $15 per month from January through November, plus $35 in December, which you can put toward the rental itself after adding the card to your Uber account (the Uber Cash can also be used on U.S. rides or Uber Eats orders, but you must pay with an Amex card to use it).

Several Delta co-branded cards from American Express also carry Uber One credits, covering between 6 and 12 months of an Uber One membership, depending on which card you have.

Hot Tip:

The American Express® Gold Card provides up to $10 in Uber Cash each month, up to $120 per year, usable on U.S. rides, Uber Eats orders, and Uber Rent bookings. To receive the Uber Cash each month, add the card as a payment method in the Uber app. You must pay with an Amex card to use the Uber Cash.

Final Thoughts

Hourly rentals fill a real gap. A 3-hour Zipcar for a Costco run or a furniture pickup costs less than a full rental day, and it can beat taking several surge-priced Uber rides for the same errand. And it definitely beats heading out to the airport to pick up a rental car for an in-city errand that lasts just a few hours.

If the Amex Platinum card already covers your Uber One membership, the 10% back makes this worth a try. Open the app, see whether a Zipcar is parked near you, and grab that $20 credit before the first 1,500 spots are gone.
