United Airlines’ MileagePlus program is changing how members earn Premier status. Starting January 1, 2027, Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) are going away entirely, and Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) become the only metric that counts for earning status. The Premier 1K tier is also getting harder to reach, jumping from 28,000 PQPs to 32,000 PQPs annually.

United calls this a simplification, and for many members it is. There’s just 1 metric to track going foward. If you’ve always earned status on PQPs alone, the Silver, Gold, and Platinum Premier thresholds don’t change. But if you rack up lots of cheap segments or you’re chasing 1K, 2027 will be more expensive.

Unlike other airlines that let you earn status without ever boarding a plane, United still requires you to fly.

Let’s dig into the changes to see what’s new, who wins, and who loses.

New United Airlines Premier Status Requirements

Presently, there are 2 ways to earn United Premier status: PQPs alone or a combination of PQFs and a lower PQP total. As of 2027, only PQPs will matter.

Here’s an overview of the current and future earning requirements for MileagePlus:

2026: PQP Only

2026: PQF + PQP

2027 Requirement

Premier Silver

6,000 PQPs

15 PQFs + 5,000 PQPs

6,000 PQP

Premier Gold

12,000 PQPs

30 PQFs + 10,000 PQPs

12,000 PQPs

Premier Platinum

18,000 PQPs

45 PQFs + 15,000 PQPs

18,000 PQPs

Premier 1K

28,000 PQPs

60 PQFs + 22,000 PQPs

32,000 PQPs

The increase to 32,000 PQPs for 1K status is about 14% more than the current PQP-only path. It’s a an even bigger shock for members who’ve been earning 1K with 60 PQFs and 22,000 PQPs. They’ll need 10,000 more PQP than before — about a 45% increase.

Segment runs are also going away. Flying bunch of short flights at the end of the year to hit a PQF target won’t help once we move into 2027.

You Still Have To Fly

United Airlines is dropping PQFs from its status requirements, but there’ll still be a flight minimum. You’ll need at least 4 flights on United or United Express in 2027 to qualify for any elite tier. Partner flights won’t count toward the 4-flight requirement.

This is where United differs from its biggest rivals. American Airlines AAdvantage requires 200,000 Loyalty Points for top-tier Executive Platinum status, and you can earn it entirely through spending on the ground. Delta SkyMiles requires 28,000 Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) for Diamond Medallion. United’s top published tier now asks for 32,000 PQPs plus those 4 flights.

Starter PQPs for Cardmembers

If you have an eligible United Airlines credit card open by December 31, 2026, and qualify for 2027 Premier status, United will deposit 5% of the PQPs needed for that status level.

Deposits work as follows:

Status Tier

Starter PQP Amount

Premier Silver

300 PQPs

Premier Gold

600 PQPs

Premier Platinum

900 PQPs

Premier 1K

1,200 PQPs

The deposit is based on your Premier status as of February 1, 2027. Your card account must also still be open and not in default when United makes the deposit.

A few groups don’t qualify, though. These include United debit cardholders, members with trial status, and holders of some cards issued in other countries.

Starter PQPs amounts are awarded per member. Those with the United Quest℠ Card and United Club℠ Card will also still receive their annual bonus PQPs, which are awarded per card for accounts open and active as of December 31, 2026. You can get both.

Earning PQPs With United Credit Cards

Beyond starter PQPs, United cardholders can continue to earn PQPs on everyday spending, subject to annual earning limits.

$480,000 (as of 2027)

The new 32,000 PQP cap on the United Club card and United Club Business card matches the 1K threshold exactly. In theory, you could earn all the PQPs needed for 1K entirely through card spending and only fly the 4 required flights. In practice, spending $480,000 a year on a credit card isn’t realistic for most people.

PQPs from card spending posts within 6 weeks of meeting the spending requirement.

Dynamic PlusPoints Pricing

There’s another change for Premier 1K and Premier Platinum members who use PlusPoints. For travel on or after February 1, 2027, the number of PlusPoints needed for an upgrade may vary based on demand and seat availability. In other words, it’s going dynamic.

If you’ve already exchanged PlusPoints for 2027 PQFs, United will refund the transaction. Affected members will get a notification with more details.

What You Should Do Now

If you’ve been thinking about getting a United credit card, the timing matters. If you open an eligible card account by December 31, 2026, you’ll get starter PQPs for 2027 — assuming you qualify for some level of MileagePlus status. Holders of the United Quest card, United Club card, and United Club Business card also lock in their annual bonus PQPs by having an account on December 31, 2026.

Next, look at how you’ve been earning status. If you always qualified through PQPs, your path to the Silver through Platinum tiers hasn’t changed. If PQFs did most of the work for you, you should do the math for the new system. You may need a credit card, may need to book more expensive fares, or you may have to accept a lower tier going forward.

Final Thoughts

United’s 2027 changes make Premier status easier to understand on the one hand; it’s harder to earn for those at the top, though. PQP-only earners below Premier 1K won’t notice much. High-frequency flyers on cheap fares and anyone chasing 1K will feel it most.

The 4-flight minimum also keeps United apart from American and Delta, where you can earn top-tier status without flying. Starter PQPs will soften the blow a little for eligible cardholders, but the message is clear: United wants status to come from spending, whether that’s in the air or on a credit card. How frequently you fly doesn’t matter much, if at all.
