United often runs a promotion known as Mile Play where the airline awards MileagePlus miles to select members after they meet a certain number and/or type of flights in a given time period. The offer provides free miles for qualifying activities and incentivizes customers to continue to fly with United.

Here’s what you should know about the latest promotion and how to register!

How To Register

First, you’ll need to register for the Mile Play promotion. Once you enter your MileagePlus loyalty number, you’ll get to see your targeted promotion.

Were You Targeted?

Unfortunately, not all members are targeted, though there does appear to be a mix of both United elite status members and non-status holders who are eligible for the offer.

Having a higher elite status doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you’ll be targeted, though the offers seem to be better for some.

If you’re not targeted for the promotion, there’s nothing you can do except hope that you can participate next time.

Promotion Details

The number of miles United will award changes depending on your qualification, elite status level, and pattern of flying. Here are some examples of offers that Upgraded Points staffers have received:

  • Book and take a trip 3 times to get 20,000 bonus award miles. Minimum fare of $200 per trip.
  • Book and take a trip 1 time and earn 5x bonus miles, up to 12,000 bonus award miles. Minimum fare of $200 per trip.
  • Book and take a trip 1 time and earn 3x bonus miles, up to 9,000 bonus award miles. Minimum fare of $100 per trip.
  • Book and take a trip 3 times to earn 5,000 miles. Minimum fare of $275 per trip.

All offers appear to end on September 30, 2023, so you’ll need to complete the qualifying transactions before this date in order to receive the bonus points. Remember, a qualifying fare is without taxes, so you’ll likely need to pay over these amounts in order to be eligible.

How To Use Bonus MileagePlus Miles

With the extra miles you earn, you can use them for:

Some of the offers that are circulating are enough for a cheap, free, one-way flight, so certainly don’t overlook this promotion.

Hot Tip: If you need to top off your United MileagePlus balance, you can also transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points and Bilt Rewards points at a 1:1 ratio.

Final Thoughts

This offer is an easy way to earn MileagePlus miles for little to no extra effort. Many — but not all — passengers should be eligible to earn the extra miles, which can then be used toward future flights, upgrades, and more.

Most of the qualifying activity is relatively straightforward to complete, so you should definitely check to see if you’re eligible to participate today.

Do you have to book through United’s site to get the bonus? Or can you book through a third party like through the Chase Ultimate Rewards to be eligible as well? (as long as you exceed the minimum purchase rate)

Hi, If my spouse and I both got the offer and I book our tickets under one reservation using my account, will he get the bonus miles?

Thank you.

Hi Queenie,

If he has his own United MileagePlus number, and you entered his number for his flight while booking, then yes he will get the miles.

Mine, like yours says, “Book and Take” flights. If I booked last week but fly before June 5th, does that count?

Hi Robert. The t&c indicates, “Only transactions initiated after registration and completed on or prior to June 5, 2023 will qualify toward satisfaction of the offer requirements.” You may want to see if it’s worth canceling your flight and rebooking in order to earn the miles in the Mile Play offer. Thanks for reading!

Do one-way tickets count? I don’t read anything saying they don’t.

Hi Alan. I just read through the terms/conditions for my Mile Play Promo offer and it did not say round-trip tickets were required. It just said an itinerary with a base fare of $300 or more. This is my offer, though. Offers differ by member.
