United Airlines has unveiled its Premier status changes for 2026, and while the headline is that the path to earning elite status will technically get tougher, the overall picture isn’t all that bad.

The Premier Qualifying Point (PQP) and Premier Qualifying Flight (PQF) requirements will remain unchanged, and members will continue to receive an automatic PQP head start in the upcoming year.

But United is also rolling out several meaningful upgrades — from more ways to earn PlusPoints to new opportunities to upgrade award tickets — while teasing a big shift to dynamic upgrades coming in 2027.

Here’s what travelers should know about what’s changing and what’s staying the same.

What Stays the Same for MileagePlus in 2026

United is keeping the core structure of MileagePlus Premier qualification exactly the same for another year. That means no surprises (or new hurdles) for flyers looking to keep or improve their United elite status.

Premier Qualification Requirements

The PQP and PQF thresholds remain identical to those used in 2025:

  • Premier Silver: 5,000 PQP plus 15 PQF or 6,000 PQP
  • Premier Gold: 10,000 PQP plus 30 PQF or 12,000 PQP
  • Premier Platinum: 15,000 PQP plus 45 PQF or 18,000 PQP
  • Premier 1K: 22,000 PQP plus 60 PQF or 28,000 PQP

For anyone planning their 2026 travel strategy, this consistency makes life easier — especially compared to programs that adjust thresholds year after year.

Starter PQP Deposits Return

United is also bringing back the popular “starter deposit” of PQPs for members who hold Premier status at the start of 2026. These deposits post early in the year and give elites an automatic boost toward status requalification.

The head-start deposit amounts will remain the same next year, as follows:

  • Premier Silver: 300 PQP
  • Premier Gold: 600 PQP
  • Premier Platinum: 900 PQP
  • Premier 1K: 1,400 PQP

This is one of the most flyer-friendly aspects of the program, and keeping it in place is a big win for elites.

What’s Changing for 2026 and Beyond

More Ways To Earn PlusPoints (Starting January 1, 2026)

Premier 1K and Global Services members will now earn additional PlusPoints from PQP earned via eligible United credit card spending. There’s no limit to how many PlusPoints you can earn, making card spending more valuable for upgrade-focused flyers.

Upgrades on Award Tickets Expand (Starting February 1, 2026)

Both PlusPoints and Complimentary Premier Upgrades (CPUs) will become eligible for use on upgrades on award tickets for all Premier members. This opens a new door for flexibility, especially on routes where award space is plentiful but cash fares run high.

Enhanced Polaris Saver Award Access

United Chase credit cardholders, Premier Silver, and Premier Gold members now have increased access to Polaris Saver Awards. This makes it easier to book United Polaris business class at lower mileage levels when those rare Saver seats appear.

Credit Card PQP Earning Updates

Those with the Bam MileagePlus credit card will earn 1 PQP per $20 spent, capped at 1,500 PQP for the 2026 program year. Additionally, those with United Airlines cards from First Hawaiian Bank will still earn 1 PQP per $20 spent, while the cap is increasing to 2,000 PQPs annually.

A Dynamic PlusPoints System Is Coming (February 2027)

United will retire the fixed PlusPoints upgrade chart and replace it with a dynamic model. Upgrade pricing will fluctuate based on demand, cabin, route, and more. Think of this as the upgrade equivalent of dynamic award pricing: more flexible for the airline, less predictable for travelers.

Analyzing the Changes: What’s Good and What Isn’t?

The Positives

The biggest win is stability. Keeping PQP and PQF thresholds steady for another year helps travelers plan — and avoid status inflation fatigue. The continued PQP starter deposit is also a meaningful loyalty gesture.

More ways to earn PlusPoints through credit card spend is a smart, practical improvement for heavy spenders. And allowing upgrades on award tickets is something flyers have been requesting for years, finally bringing MileagePlus in line with competitors like Delta SkyMiles and American Airlines AAdvantage.

Polaris Saver availability for lower-tier elites and Chase cardholders is another welcome enhancement, though how often those Saver seats actually show up remains to be seen.

The Negatives

The looming shift to dynamic PlusPoints pricing in 2027 is less exciting. While United says this will provide “greater flexibility,” the history of dynamic pricing suggests the opposite for travelers: more variability and potentially higher upgrade costs when you actually want to use your points. Sure, you might get a deal if you’re traveling on a date and route no one else wants to book, but that will be the exception.

The PQP earning caps on co-branded cards also remain relatively low compared to spending-to-status opportunities in other programs.

Final Thoughts

United’s 2026 MileagePlus updates offer a refreshing dose of stability with several meaningful improvements. Status thresholds stay the same, members get another PQP head start, and long-requested upgrade flexibility is finally arriving.

But the 2027 shift to dynamic PlusPoints pricing is a wild card that could make upgrades less predictable. For now, though, United elites can head into the new year with a clearer roadmap — and a few new perks to look forward to.
