The integration of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines marches on with another update we’ve been expecting for a few months.

Alaska Companion Fares can now be used on select Hawaiian Airlines flights, which adds even more functionality to one of our favorite airline credit card perks.

Here’s what you need to know.

Use Your Alaska Companion Fare on Some Hawaiian Flights

For a few months, we’ve known that Alaska Companion Fare functionality would be expanded to Hawaiian Airlines flights, but we didn’t know exactly when that change would take effect.

That day has come, as noticed by the team at AwardWallet. Alaska’s much-loved Companion Fare can now be used on one-way or round-trip fares in the main cabin on Hawaiian Airlines flights within North America, including Hawaii.

This excludes Hawaiian’s international routes — of which it operates several from its Honolulu (HNL) hub — but the airline operates a solid domestic network that includes some very long flights from cities as far as Boston (BOS) and New York (JFK) on the East Coast, which means you could potentially score some incredible value if you’re planning a trip to Hawaii.

Note that destinations in U.S. territories, such as Pago Pago (PPG) in American Samoa, aren’t considered part of North America for the Companion Fare.

About the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare

Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare is a perk offered on the following Alaska Airlines credit cards after spending $6,000 during the cardmember year:

The companion fare allows you to purchase a second ticket on a round-trip flight in the Main Cabin (economy class) for $99 plus tax. Note that it ends up costing a little more than $99. You’ll pay $99 plus taxes (starting at $22), so you’ll spend at least $121. It’s a great deal, especially when used on an expensive itinerary.

This is precisely why expanded eligibility to Hawaiian’s North American flights is a big deal. The airline operates some routes that are much longer (and often more expensive) than Alaska Airlines, simply because Hawaii is so much further away from the continental U.S.

This means that you could potentially score 2 tickets to Hawaii for only a little bit more than the cost of 1 — excellent news for cardholders because flights to Hawaii, especially those from the eastern portion of the country, can be pricey.

Final Thoughts

We already loved Alaska’s Companion Fare, but it’s getting even better, thanks to the new ability to use it on select Hawaiian Airlines flights. Alaska co-branded credit cardholders should be very excited about this development, and we look forward to more news coming out of the ongoing merger of Alaska and Hawaiian.
