The United Kingdom’s Virgin Atlantic and Canada’s WestJet have announced a strengthening of ties in the form of an enhanced codeshare agreement covering flights between the 2 nations.

Part of the new codeshare agreement includes Virgin Atlantic opening a new route from London to Toronto next month, a flight it hasn’t offered in more than 10 years.

“Canada is an incredibly important opportunity for Virgin Atlantic as many of our customers travel between the Great White North, the U.K., India, and beyond. This expanded partnership with WestJet, alongside our partners at Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM, will create seamless connectivity for our customers via our new route launching between Toronto and London,” said Juha Jarvinen, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Virgin Atlantic.

Here’s a look at all the details of this exciting new development.

Virgin Atlantic and WestJet Deepen Cooperation With New Codeshare Arrangement

The tighter codeshare agreement between Virgin Atlantic and WestJet will benefit customers on either side of the Atlantic. It will allow travelers to fly on a single ticket to all the destinations covered in the agreement and check their bags through to their final destination, eliminating the need to collect and re-check them if traveling on both airlines.

The first phase of the expanded codeshare agreement goes into effect today, February 17, 2025, for flights beginning March 30, 2025, coinciding with the launch of Virgin’s nonstop service between London-Heathrow (LHR) and Toronto Pearson (YYZ).

Passengers originating in the U.K. can seamlessly connect to WestJet flights between Toronto and multiple cities across Canada, including Calgary (YYC), Edmonton (YEG), Ottawa (YOW), Vancouver (YVR), Winnipeg (YWG), and more. Meanwhile, passengers originating in any of the cities mentioned above can leverage Virgin Atlantic’s network in London to access destinations including Cape Town (CPT) Delhi (DEL), Dubai (DXB), Johannesburg (JNB), Malé, Maldives (MLE), Mumbai (BOM), and more.

The airlines will co-locate with each other at Toronto Pearson’s Terminal 3, and reciprocal loyalty benefits for Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and WestJet Rewards members will be rolled out “later in the year,” according to a press release.

Final Thoughts

Virgin Atlantic and WestJet have beefed up their codeshare agreement for flights between Canada and the U.K. This enhanced partnership coincides with Virgin Atlantic’s return to Toronto after more than a decade and will facilitate more seamless journeys. It also will open up new destinations for travelers based on both sides of the Pond.

We look forward to even more cooperation between these 2 carriers in the future!
