Virgin Atlantic and WestJet have enabled passengers to earn and redeem miles on each other’s flights. This is a meaningful expansion of the carriers’ existing partnership and brings a welcome new pair of options for flyers.

Let’s take a look at the details.

New Reciprocal Earning/Redeeming Capabilities for Virgin Atlantic and WestJet Flyers

Virgin Atlantic and WestJet are moving closer together with the launch of mileage earning and redeeming on each other’s flights. The move comes almost a year after London-based Virgin Atlantic resumed flying to Toronto (YYZ) for the first time in over a decade.

Members of either airline’s loyalty program can earn miles on flights with the other carrier, but there are some restrictions on the redemption side of things. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members can redeem points on any WestJet flight, but WestJet Rewards members can only redeem their miles on certain Virgin Atlantic flights from London Heathrow (LHR) that are also marketed by WestJet.

With the entire WestJet network open for Virgin Atlantic redemptions, there should be some interesting opportunities for flyers, as the Canadian airline has a decent long-haul network and fresh aircraft with solid premium products. Plus, it’s very easy to earn Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points, as the program maintains transfer partnerships with many major transferable-currency programs, including American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Redemptions can be made according to a distance-based chart. You can see the rates below:

However, it’s not all good news — at least for now. As One Mile at a Time points out, if you want to use Virgin Atlantic points for WestJet flights, you can’t do so online. You must call Virgin Atlantic. Also, OMAAT reported not being able to find any business-class availability on a few of WestJet’s long-haul flights, which would be the very best use for this new capability.

Whether that changes in the future remains to be seen, but we certainly hope that would be the case.

Hot Tip:

Final Thoughts

It’s always great when airlines give flyers more ways to earn and redeem points on flights. The latest iteration of the partnership between Virgin Atlantic and WestJet is no surprise, given the latter’s deepening ties with other SkyTeam giants Delta and Air France-KLM.

We hope we’ll see availability open up in WestJet’s premium cabins on long-haul flights, but having this ability in the first place is a very big step in the right direction.
