Marriott’s W Hotels brand and the Las Vegas Strip seem like a match made in heaven: They’re both a little bit over-the-top and possess a certain glamour that many can’t quite place.

However, no matter how surprising it may seem, Las Vegas currently doesn’t have a W hotel. That’s all set to change — and quickly.

Relatively new partners Marriott and MGM have just announced plans to bring a W property to the Las Vegas Strip by the end of this year, achieved by rebranding an existing property. Let’s take a look at all the details.

A W Hotel Is Coming to Las Vegas

Months after the partnership between Marriott and the MGM Collection went live, the 2 companies have announced plans to convert an existing property on the Mandalay Bay campus (which should be the existing Delano Las Vegas) into a W hotel. This comes after news that W hotels are rebranding and evolving.

“We’re thrilled to continue working with MGM to bring W Las Vegas to the legendary Las Vegas Strip,” said Leeny Oberg, Marriott International’s chief financial officer and executive vice president of development. “This agreement is a pivotal moment in our collaboration, which continues to expand hospitality and entertainment offerings for guests. As a luxury brand rooted in bold design and nightlife, W Hotels is well-positioned to elevate experiences for travelers in this destination.”

At this point, details are scant — other than the fact that we know the upcoming W will be located within the larger Mandalay Bay property and that the conversion to W Hotels will be complete by the end of this year.

Based on the image shared in Marriott’s press release, it appears that the W will take over the tower that the Delano Las Vegas currently occupies, but that’s not confirmed. Also unconfirmed is whether or not the property will undergo a renovation or a refresh before it becomes a W. Judging by the conversion timeline, however, it doesn’t seem like it will be renovated — at least at the present time.

Marriott’s press release states that “additional plans for the property [will] be announced in the future.” This could very well indicate that a renovation is coming at some point.

Marriott’s Presence on the Las Vegas Strip

Historically, Marriott hasn’t had an enormous presence on the strip. But the massive hotel chain has taken strides to change that in short order. By teaming up with MGM, it created the MGM Collection, properties Marriott Bonvoy members can book directly through Marriott’s channels.

Members can earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points at these MGM Collection properties on the strip:

Other Marriott-affiliated properties on the strip that aren’t part of the MGM Collection include:

Once the W is up and running, Marriott will have a signature brand directly on the Las Vegas Strip — one that seems naturally suited to the glitz, glamor, and buzz of Las Vegas.

Final Thoughts

Marriott continues to make its presence known on the Las Vegas Strip in a big way with the announcement of the upcoming W Las Vegas. While we don’t have too many details at this point, we do know that the new W property should be operational by the end of 2024.

Frankly, we’re just surprised it took so long for W Hotels to make its mark on the Las Vegas Strip.
