One of the more interesting offerings from American Airlines is a separate loyalty program for businesses. Previously known as Business Extra, the AAdvantage Business program exists alongside its standard AAdvantage frequent flyer program to reward businesses (and their employees) with extra rewards on business travel.

If you’re a business owner who happens to travel frequently, or if you have employees who do, this program provides an excellent opportunity to earn extra rewards. We’re going to walk you through how to access AAdvantage Business, how to earn miles quickly, and of course, the best ways to make the most of your rewards.

If you use — or think you’d want to use — AAdvantage Business at all, bookmark this guide. We’ll be showing you how to redeem your points for tons of value.

American Airlines AAdvantage Business Overview

AAdvantage Business is the business-focused loyalty program offered by American Airlines. It caters to small and medium-sized businesses and offers companies the ability to earn rewards for employee travel. Employees benefit too, earning bonus rewards in addition to the miles and Loyalty Points through the American Airlines AAdvantage program.

Its sister loyalty program, American Airlines AAdvantage, is geared towards the larger travel demographic, including non-business travelers.

The AAdvantage Business program doesn’t just offer an opportunity to earn more rewards, it also provides useful travel tools. Account administrators can set travel policies, manage employee traveler, and generate financial reports. It’s all available in a use-friendly interface that most people will find easy to navigate.

Pros

  • Any small business can join (for free) and the $5,000 spending requirement for redeeming miles is waived with the Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ Mastercard®.
  • Business owners and employees earn miles and Loyalty Points in addition to the rewards earned through the AAdvantage program.
  • Business owners redeem miles towards business expenses or transfer miles to employees, without a fee.

Cons

  • AAdvantage Business members must have at least 5 active members and are eligible to transfer or redeem miles only after spending $5,000 on business travel in the previous 12 months.
  • Employees only earn rewards if they select “business” when booking flights through aa.com.
  • Bonus miles and Loyalty Points are only awarded on flights, not hotels or other travel bookings.

Businesses must meet the following eligibility criteria to register for AAdvantage Business:

How To Earn Rewards with AAdvantage Business

Earning rewards with AAdvantage Business is simply and requires just a few steps after your account is approved:

  1. Register business travelers
  2. When booking travel through aa.com, provide the registered traveler’s AAdvantage number and select business as the travel type.

Previously, AAdvantage Extra members earned 4 AAdvantage Business points per $20 spent on base airfare, which translates to an earning ratio of 1 point per $5 spent. However, the new AAdvantage Business program offers a much more simplified earning structure:

  • Business earns 1 miles per $1 spent
  • Business travelers earn 1 Loyalty Point per $1 spent (plus, rewards from the AAdvantage program)

If your business pays for eligible flights with the Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ Mastercard®, both the business and traveler will earn extra rewards from the credit card:

  • Business earns 2 miles $1 spent
  • Business travelers earn 1 Loyalty Point per $1 spent

You can earn miles with AAdvantage Business by booking paid airfare on American Airlines or American-ticketed (001) flights on the following airlines partners::

  • Aer Lingus
  • Air Tahiti Nui
  • Alaska Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cape Air
  • Cathay Pacific
  • China Southern Airlines

  • Iberia
  • IndiGo
  • Japan Airlines
  • JetSMART
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Qantas
  • Qatar Airways
  • Royal Air Maroc
  • Royal Jordanian Airlines
  • SriLankan Airlines

AAdvantage Business rewards post to your account within 48 hours after a flight has finished, and your miles will expire 24 months after they’re earned.

Miles and Loyalty Points earned are deposited into the traveler’s account, while 1 Loyalty Point per $1 spent is deposited into the business account.

How To Redeem Miles with AAdvantage Business

The AAdvantage Business program earns regular AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points. This is different from the old Business Extra program, which awarded “points” that were valued differently than AAdvantage miles.

The revised AAdvantage Business program is much simpler: Travelers earn Loyalty Points that are deposited directly into their accounts, while businesses earn miles that they can distribute among employees or travel managers.

Once the miles are in their accounts they can redeem them for anybody: friends, family, and anyone else.

As a reminder, you can redeeming AAdvantage miles for:

We find that redeeming miles for flights will typically give you the best value for your miles – especially if you use them for business or first class travel. Award tickets for American Airlines flights start at 7,500 miles each way and increase based on destination and cabin flown.

As part of the Oneworld alliance, American AIrlines has a vast partner network, allowing you to fly virtually anywhere in the world using AAdvantage miles. Tickets on these partners start at 12,000 miles and increase based on cabin and destination.

You can redeem AAdvantage miles in two ways:

  • Online through the website
  • Over the phone by calling 800-882-8880

The 13 Best Ways To Use Your American Airlines AAdvantage Miles

So, now that you know all the ways to earn miles with AAdvantage Business and understand what they can be used for, what are the best ways to use them once they hit your account? We’re going to show you all of our favorite ways to get maximum value from your AAdvantage miles.

1. Upgrade Your Transcontinental British Airways or Iberia Flights for 12,500 Miles

British Airways A350 1000 Club Suites review LAS LHR cabin 1

American Airlines charges at least 57,500 miles each way for a business class ticket to Europe. If you’re flying British Airways, those tickets typically carry over $500 in takes and fees, making even award redemptions less appealing.

A better option might be redeeming miles for an upgrade award. American Airlines offers upgrades on British Airways and Iberia award flights to Europe starting at just 12,500 miles from premium economy to business or 25,000 miles from economy to business.

Considering you can often buy round-trip premium economy seats for under $1,500 and economy class as low as $400 from either coast, this can be a cost-effective alternative to redeeming miles for the entire flight.

Here are some great ways to get some exceptional value from your AAdvantage miles:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – London (LHR) upgraded one-way from premium economy to business class for 12,500 points (~$1,200 cash value)
  • New York (JFK) – Madrid (MAD) upgraded one-way from economy to business class for 25,000 miles (~$1,400 cash value)

2. Upgrade Your Long-haul American Airlines Flights for 8,000 Miles

You can upgrade your long-haul American Airlines flights using AAdvantage miles for excellent value. Upgrades from full-fare or premium economy class on flights to Central America start at just 8,000 miles. If you’re flying on a discounted economy fare, an upgrade to business class will set you back 15,000 miles and $175.

Upgrades on flights to Asia, Europe, the Middl East, and Africa cost slightly more but can still present excellent value.

You’ll need 15,000 miles when upgrading from full-fare or premium economy on these flights, while a discounted economy ticket costs 25,000 miles and $350 to upgrade.

Here are some of the highest-value routes we could find:

  • Charlotte (CLT) – Rome (FCO) upgraded one-way from American Airlines full-fare economy to Flagship Business for 15,000 points (~$3,000 cash value)
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Tokyo-Narita (NRT) upgraded one-way from American Airlines full-fare economy to Flagship Business for 15,000 points (~$4,000 cash value)
  • New York (JFK) – Doha (DOH) upgraded one-way from American Airlines discounted economy to Flagship Business for 25,000 points and $350 (~$4,000 cash value)

Bottom Line: Our favorite way to redeem AAdvantage miles is for flight upgrades. On a per-point basis, you’ll almost always get the most value from flight upgrades on American Airlines, specifically for transcontinental Flagship routes and international long-haul flights.

3. Book Expensive Domestic Economy Class Flights Within the U.S. for 7,500 Miles

The AAdvantage program is one of the few domestic frequent flyer programs that still publishes an award chart, allowing members to understand (roughly) how many miles to save up for an award flight.

Of course, availability varies and pricing is dynamic but it’s nice to know that the starting price for most domestic economy awards is just 7,500 miles each way.

Sometimes you’ll find award fares well below this pricing, especially during off-peak dates.

Here are some of the most valuable routes to book:

  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Jackson Hole (JAC) in American Airlines economy class from 7,000 miles each way
  • Chicago (ORD) – Miami (MIA) in American Airlines economy class from 8,500 miles each way
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – New York (JFK) in American Airlines economy class from 10,500 miles each way

4. Fly From North America to the Caribbean in Economy Class for 8,000 Miles

Is the Caribbean on your list? You can get excellent value for your airfare if you redeem 8,000 miles for a one-way economy class flight between North America and the Caribbean.

Many of these itineraries involve connecting in a hub like Dallas (DFW) or Miami (MIA), but you can still get excellent value if your trip originates in smaller airports across the country. In doing so, expect to get a cash value of up to $1,500 round-trip.

Here are some ideas:

  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Montego Bay (MBJ) in American Airlines economy class from 8,000 miles each way
  • Charlotte (CLT) – Nassau (NAS) in American Airlines economy class from 8,000 miles each way
  • Santa Barbara (SBA) – Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Aruba (AUA) in American Airlines economy class from 10,000 miles each way

5. Fly From North America to the Caribbean in Business Class for 20,000 Miles

If you’re interested in flying business class, a one-way award ticket will set you back just 20,000 AAdvantage miles.

You can get thousands of dollars in value from your miles, depending on the time of year you’re traveling. Here are some great example redemptions:

  • New York (JFK)– Montego Bay (MBJ) one-way in American Airlines business class for 20,000 miles
  • Miami (MIA) – Havana (HAV) one-way in American Airlines business class for 20,000 miles
  • Charlotte (CLT) – Punta Cana (PUJ) one-way in American Airlines business class for 20,000 miles
  • Philadelphia (PHL) – Aruba (AUA) one-way in American Airlines business class for 20,000 miles

6. Fly From the Continental U.S. to Europe for 22,500 Miles in Economy Class (Off-Oeak)

Europe is an ever-popular destination, and also has some of the highest ticket prices around. But you can find terrific deals traveling on American Airlines’ partners during the off-season – using either cash or miles.

Travel between January 10 – March 14 and November 1 – December 14 and you’ll need just 22,500 miles each way.

Check out some of these example routes to Europe that you can book with American Airlines partners:

  • Boston (BOS) – Dublin (DUB) one-way in Aer Lingus economy class for 22,500 miles during off-peak season
  • Dallas (DFW) – Helsinki (HEL) one-way in Finnair economy class for 22,500 miles during off-peak season
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Madrid (MAD) one-way in Iberia economy class for 22,500 miles during off-peak season

7. Fly From the U.S. to London in Flagship First for 75,000 Miles

American Airlines deploys a few of its most premium aircraft on flights to London (LHR). These aircraft, the 4-class Boeing 777-300ER, boast a spacious Flagship First seat that can swivel 270 degrees!

And if you happen to find availability, you can redeem as few as from 85,000 miles each way for first class to London. Considering that round-trip first class tickets retail for $10,000+, you can see the value proposition here.

Here are some of our favorite flights to book:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way in American Airlines Flagship First from 85,000 miles
  • Miami (MIA) – London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way in American Airlines Flagship First from 85,000 miles
  • New York (JFK) – London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way in American Airlines Flagship First from 85,000 miles

8. Fly From the U.S. to Europe in Flagship Business for 54,000 Miles

If you prefer to save some points by booking business class to Europe, American Airlines offers a terrific redemption opportunity.

You can redeem as few as 54,000 miles for a one-way business class ticket to London, while cities like Madrid and Athens cost as few as 62,000 miles.

These tickets usually sell for around $4,000 to $5,000 round-trip, making this a terrific value for your miles. The award taxes are also reasonable, starting at just $5.60 one way.

Here are some examples of nonstop flights you can book:

  • Boston (BOS) – London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way in American Airlines Flagship Business for 54,000 miles
  • Charlotte (CLT) – London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way in American Airlines Flagship Business for 62,000 miles
  • Chicago (ORD) – Barcelona (BCN) one-way in American Airlines Flagship Business for 62,000 miles
  • New York (JFK) – Athens (ATH) one-way in American Airlines Flagship Business for 62,000 miles
  • Philadelphia (PHL) – Athens (ATH) one-way in American Airlines Flagship Business for 62,000 miles

9. Fly Iberia from the U.S. to Spain for 57,500 Miles

Thanks to American Airlines’ partnership with Iberia, you can fly to Spain in business class for as few as 57,500 AAdvantage miles (plus around $130 in taxes and fees) each way.

This is cheaper than a Flagship Business award ticket and you get a flatbed seat, but it opens up more routing opportunities. Iberia offers direct flights between Madrid (MAD) and many major U.S. cities.

Here are some example routes you can book using this certificate:

  • Boston (BOS) – Madrid (MAD) one-way in Iberia business class for 57,500 miles + $123.60 in taxes and fees
  • Chicago (ORD) – – Madrid (MAD) one-way in Iberia business class for 57,500 miles + $135 in taxes and fees
  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) – Madrid (MAD) one-way in Iberia business class for 57,500 miles + $135 in taxes and fees
  • Miami (MIA) – Barcelona (BCN) one-way in Iberia business class for 57,500 miles + $134.90 in taxes and fees
  • New York (JFK) – Madrid (MAD) one-way in Iberia business class for 57,500 miles + $123.60 in taxes and fees
  • Washington, D.C. (IAD) – Madrid (MAD) one-way in Iberia business class for 57,500 miles + $123.60 in taxes and fees

Hot Tip: Iberia often sells discounted economy and business class tickets, which can reduce the value proposition of redeeming miles for flights on the Spanish flag carrier.

10. Book Japan Airlines Business Class From the U.S. to Japan for 60,000 Miles

Japan Airlines is another airline that offers a well-rounded experience bookable with AAdvantage Business miles.

We like redeeming AAdvantage miles on Japan Airlines because nonstop business class flights on the Oneworld airline can be pricey, while partner-level availability can be plentiful.

With such an attractive value proposition, we encourage you to explore the idea of booking Japan Airlines business class for just 60,000 AAdvantage miles each way. You’ll get a cash value of $6,000 to $10,000 on a round-trip ticket.

Here are some sample routes to consider:

  • Boston (BOS) – Tokyo-Narita (NRT) one-way in Japan Airlines business class for 60,000 miles
  • Chicago (ORD) – Tokyo-Haneda (HND) one-way in Japan Airlines business class for 60,000 miles
  • Dallas (DFW) – Tokyo-Narita (HND) one-way in Japan Airlines business class for 60,000 miles
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Tokyo-Narita (NRT) one-way in Japan Airlines business class for 60,000 miles
  • New York (JFK) – Tokyo-Haneda (HND) one-way in Japan Airlines business class for 60,000 miles
  • Seattle (SEA) – Tokyo-Narita (NRT) one-way in Japan Airlines business class for 60,000 miles

11. Fly Business Class From the U.S. to Australia and New Zealand from 60,000 Miles

Award availability on American Airlines to Australia and New Zealand can be difficult to find, but availability is better in the summer.

You can find business class tickets between Los Angeles (LAX) and Sydney (SYD) for as low as 60,000 miles each way.

Qantas offers a fantastic product at 80,000 miles each way (with direct flights out of several U.S. cities), but availability is often limited.

Hawaiian Airlines is another great option, with its direct flight out of Honolulu connecting several mainland U.S. airports. A one-way business class ticket via Honolulu starts at just 65,000 miles each way.

Still, there’s no better way to cross the Pacific than in a flatbed seat, which can cost upwards of $15,000 round-trip. Both American Airline and Qantas offer fantastic products on these routes.

Here are 2 of the best routes to use these certificates on:

  • Dallas (DFW) – Sydney (SYD) one-way in Qantas business class from 80,000 miles
  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Sydney (SYD) one-way in American Airlines Flagship Business from 60,000 miles
  • Honolulu (HNL) – Sydney (SYD) one-way in Hawaiian Airlines business class from 80,000 miles
  • New York (JFK) – Auckland (AKL) one-way in Qantas business class from 80,000 miles

12. Book British Airways First Class From the U.S. to London for 85,000 Miles

British Airways First Class

British Airways and American Airlines, despite being close partners, vie for market share in the very competitive U.S.-U.K. travel corridor.

In general, though, British Airways edges out American Airlines for its first class product, making it a good idea to choose BA first class over AA first class when given the choice.

The other added benefit of British Airways is that it connects London with many more cities than American does, understandable given its position as the flag carrier of the U.K.

Starting at 85,000 miles one-way, you can book a British Airways first class ticket between the U.S. and London. Keep in mind that the award taxes can be quite steep (over $700 on the outbound), but these first class tickets routinely sell for more than $10,000 round-trip .

Here are some of our favorite flights to book on this route:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way in British Airways first class for 85,000 miles
  • Miami (MIA) – London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way in British Airways first class for 85,000 miles
  • San Francisco (SFO) – London-Heathrow (LHR) one-way in British Airways first class for 85,000 miles

Final Thoughts

Overall, there’s plenty to like about the American Airlines AAdvantage Business program. The earning structure is an especially transparent and simplified aspect of the program.

One of the best features of AAdvantage Business is that travelers earn more Loyalty Points while businesses load up on redeemable miles. The ability to share those miles among employees is incredibly useful, since mileage transfers typically incur hefty fees.

But perhaps the best part (especially for business owners) is that you can redeem miles at a fantastic value.

Our favorite ways to use AAdvantage miles include international flight upgrades and long-haul flights in premium cabins. With American’s vast partner network, your miles will go even further.

There’s a lot to love about American Airlines AAdvantage Business, and if you’re a business owner, you don’t want to overlook this valuable program.
