Sun Country Airlines charges for everything but a personal item and the baggage fees depend on when and how you purchase your baggage. That said, there’s only $10 between purchasing a bag at the time of booking compared to at the airport, so it’s not the biggest difference that we’ve seen.

Can I Pre-Pay for Baggage?

Sun Country Airlines does allow passengers the ability to pre-pay luggage.

These are the ways you can pre-pay:

  • Log-in to your booking via the “My Trips” tab and add the number of bags that you would like to purchase.
  • Call the contact center at 651-905-2737.

Credit Cards That Wipe Away Your Baggage Fees

While Sun County’s credit card doesn’t offer free bags, there are ways to avoid paying carry-on, checked, and oversized baggage fees. The best way to do this is to charge your Sun County baggage fees to a Capital One® Venture® Rewards card or a Capital One® VentureOne® Card. You can then use the card’s Purchase Eraser tool to “erase” the fee from your statement.

In short, the Purchase Eraser lets you use your Capital One points to cover any type of travel purchase. For example, if you pay $30 to buy a Sun County carry-on bag online, you can use 3,000 points to erase the charge. Just note that you have 90 days from the date of purchase to erase travel charges.

Alternatively, you can use the Sun Country Airlines® Visa Signature® Card to save 50% on your first bag. Other card benefits include complimentary premium beverages, priority boarding, and more.

Exclusions and Waivers

  • Active U.S. Military: 3 free bags (2 checked and 1 overhead) are permitted. A valid Common Access Card (CAC) with “Uniformed Services” must be presented at the airport. Oversized bag fees are waived on the first 2 checked bags.
  • Sun Country Airlines® Visa Signature® Cardholders: 50% off the first bag when purchased online via the contact center.

Do you charge for medical devices (ie CPAP)?

    • Hi David,

You should not be charged extra for medical devices that fit within your luggage.

      • Tanya Redfield January 7, 2021

Not in your luggage, but other airlines allow you to carry a cpap, medicines, etc, in a bag separate from allowable luggage. Does Sun Country also honor this?

  2. If I want to upgrade from a carry on to a checked bag will I be charged a fee?

    • Hi Katie,

If you purchased the carry-on during booking, you might be charged a small fee to upgrade to a checked bag since you’d be doing so post-booking. I’d give Sun Country a call and ask, they might even be willing to waive the fee!

  3. We will be traveling for baseball. What will we be charged for an equipment bag (I’m assuming a bat is considered a weapon).

    • Catherine Luther December 29, 2020

      Hi Andrea,

Sun Country Airlines states that “Sport bags (baseball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, bowling, golf, dance, etc.) are considered bags and are subject to normal or additional bag charges.” Baggage fees depend on when you add them to your booking, so take a look at the table above for pricing.

  4. Peter Everts February 6, 2021

Is a small guitar(34”x11”x3”) allowed as a personal item carry-on to fit in the overhead, or is there a fee?

  5. Carolynn Berg September 16, 2021

As we are traveling for a wedding in Florida, is there a place that we could hang a wedding garment at a special price?

    • Hi Carolynn,

I recommend you contact Sun Country directly for assistance with that at (651)-905-2711, as they will be able to tell you if they have a spot on their planes that can accommodate that.
