VIVA Aerobus has a flexible approach to carry-on and checked luggage. Passengers can purchase additional weight to increase their allowance for both types, or add a piece of checked luggage.

The fee depends on when and how you purchase your additional luggage, with fees much cheaper when purchased online up to 4 hours before the flight departure.

Can I Pre-Pay for Baggage?

VIVA Aerobus does allow passengers the ability to pre-pay luggage. This can be added by logging-in to your booking or by calling their customer service.

Credit Cards That Wipe Away Your Baggage Fees

VIVA Aerobus doesn’t offer a U.S.-issued credit card with free bags, but there are still ways to avoid paying baggage fees when you fly with the carrier. Our favorite way to do this is to charge VIVA Aerobus baggage fees to a Capital One® Venture® Rewards card or Capital One® VentureOne® Card. Then, you can use either of the card’s Purchase Eraser tool to “erase” the fee.

This tool lets you use Venture card’s points to cover travel expenses at 1 cent per point. So if you have a $23 bag fee, you’ll pay just 2,300 Capital One points to cover the fee. Just make sure to erase the purchase in 90 days or less.

  1. The VivaAir website as of June 10, 2021, says that the basic fare does not include any carry-on allowance. But in early June, it matched what you published back in April. Carry-ons are free.

Did they change their baggage policy to jack up the fare? If you take their lowest fare of $290 RT for MDE to MIA, and add the cheapest baggage fee of $39 each way, that $290 RT becomes $368 and you can pay that or less on American or Copa and get a free carry-on, more legroom, a reclining seat, and no advertising smeared all over the interior of the plane.

When I flew Avianca a few weeks ago, the boarding pass is printed on my phone, there is no price code on the boarding pass, just my assigned seat and the flight information. Basically just an Economy ticket. I brought my conforming carry-on aboard with no issues raised.

At Medellín Viva used to make you go to the check-in counter and get your carry on weighed and then tagged to show you paid the extra fee. It’s been a while since I’ve flown obviously.

Can you please check your sources and see if your information is still current or if they changed it in June 2021??

    • Hi Norm,

You are correct! It seems VivaAir basic fare no longer includes a free carry-on. I’ve updated the post to indicate that!
