Renting a car isn’t known to be an enjoyable experience. It’s more often thought of for long lines, missing vehicles, and confusing insurance policies.

But if you know how to navigate a program, the experience can go much more smoothly.

We’ve already covered a handful of popular car rental agencies like Advantage, Avis, Hertz, National, and Enterprise. Today, we’re diving into SIXT and its SIXT ONE loyalty program. Let’s take a look at the program.

About SIXT and SIXT ONE

SIXT is a German rental car company operating in more than 100 countries.

SIXT rolled out the SIXT ONE program in the United States in late 2025, tailored to American travelers’ expectations. SIXT operates more than 100 rental branches in more than 2 dozen states and over 50 airports nationwide. Following that rollout, SIXT ONE began expanding in Europe in early 2026, and its rewards program is now available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

SIXT, like many rewards programs, rewards members who book directly. Customers who download the SIXT app, enroll in SIXT ONE and book directly with SIXT get perks such as up to 20% off rentals, the ability to skip the counter, accelerated points-earning, and complimentary upgrades.

Hot Tip:

SIXT is running a promotion where new members who join and book their first rental through the SIXT app between March 9 and April 30, 2026, receive 250 bonus rental points.

How To Rent a Car Through SIXT

Booking your rental car with SIXT is straightforward, with just a few steps. If you don’t have an account, you can sign up for a free account at Sixt.com

1. First, decide whether you’re booking a car or a truck, then select your pickup and drop-off location and pickup and return dates.

2. On the next page, the site lists available vehicles for that location. If you’re booking from a larger location, such as an airport, you can use the filter to select or deselect features, such as whether the car has GPS, is part of a promotion, or is a premium rental. The filter also lets you select the primary driver’s age, since some cars are restricted by age.

3. Once you’ve selected your vehicle, you’ll see the car’s features, as well as 2 prices. The rate that says “Best Price,” usually the cheapest, means you pay now but allows you to cancel and rebook for a fee. The rate that says “Stay flexible” is more flexible, allowing you to pay at pickup and coming with free cancellation and rebooking.

4. Next, you can add services, including insurance (which we’ll talk about later), prepaid fuel, additional drivers, and roadside protection. Once you’ve selected the ones you want, you can finalize your reservation.

Should You Purchase Car Rental Insurance?

Often, the company charges you high fees if you are in an accident or if your vehicle is stolen, so it does make sense to have some insurance. That’s a terrifying prospect — and employees at the check-in counter are well aware.

However, before you add car rental insurance, consider whether your credit card includes primary travel insurance.

Some of our favorite cards include car rental insurance benefits. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® card, for instance, comes with primary travel insurance, which means you do not have to file an insurance claim with your own automobile insurance company first for coverage to be valid. This is rare among travel rewards cards, which usually include only secondary insurance.

The Platinum Card® from American Express, for example, includes standard car rental insurance that provides secondary coverage when you use your card to reserve and pay for your entire rental car contract. You can also purchase premium primary car rental coverage.

Hot Tip:

For either primary or secondary car rental insurance, you must decline the rental car agency’s loss damage waiver (LDW) or collision damage waiver coverage (CDW) when renting the vehicle.

SIXT ONE Elite Status

SIXT ONE is the loyalty program of SIXT. Within the program, there are 4 separate status levels you can earn that offer benefits, including free upgrades, the ability to skip the line (which can come in handy if you’re running behind), and member-only offers.

Here’s a breakdown of each tier.

SIXT ONE Silver Status

You earn SIXT ONE Silver status upon joining the program. The lowest tier in the SIXT ONE program, it gives you:

  • The ability to earn rental points
  • The ability to skip the counter
  • Member-only offers
  • Up to a 8% discount

SIXT ONE Gold Status

You earn SIXT ONE Gold status from hitting 2,000 status points, which we’ll talk more about down below. In this tier, you get the following benefits:

  • 10% more rental points
  • The ability to skip the counter
  • Member-only offers
  • Up to a 10% discount

SIXT ONE Platinum Status

SIXT ONE Platinum status requires 4,000 status points. You get the following benefits:

  • 20% more rental points
  • The ability to skip the counter
  • Member-only offers
  • Up to a 15% discount
  • Eligible for free upgrades

SIXT ONE Diamond Status

Finally, the highest tier in the SIXT ONE program is Diamond status. This tier requires a whopping 6,000 status points — but you’ll be well rewarded if you manage to meet the requirements. You get:

  • 30% more rental points
  • The ability to skip the counter
  • Member-only offers
  • Up to 20% discount
  • Free upgrades

This tier also includes SIXT Diamond Lounge access, which is available at several locations across Europe. You receive perks such as a faster checkout process, a snack bar, and VIP assistance.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) doesn’t have a Diamond Lounge, but top-tier members receive Diamond Service, which includes chauffeur service at arrival and departure.

How To Earn and Redeem Points With SIXT ONE

SIXT ONE rewards you with 2 types of points on every qualifying rental: status points and rental points.

Status points are how you progress through the program, and you earn more rental points the higher your status is. If that sounds confusing, think of it this way: Status points unlock higher tiers with more benefits, while you redeem rental points for savings on future bookings.

You earn status and rental points based on your spending on the base rate, mileage, and protection. Keep in mind that, as SIXT ONE is a European-based program, payments made in another currency are converted to euros. For both types of points, you earn approximately 1 point per 1 euro (about $1.15), excluding taxes, fees and mandatory charges.

To redeem rental points, log in to your SIXT account, select your vehicle, and look for your points on the page that says “Review your booking.” There, you can choose how many points you want to redeem for savings.

SIXT ONE follows a calendar-year approach to status and points. You keep your status until the end of the following year after achieving it. For instance, if you reach Diamond in July 2026, you keep that tier until December 2027.

Status points are valid until the end of the year in which they are earned. Expired points are deducted from your points balance annually. Rental points are valid for 24 months from the end of the quarter in which they were earned.

SIXT+ Car Subscription

SIXT+ offers a car rental subscription, billed as a cheaper alternative to a short-term car lease. The car subscription is good if you have a longer trip planned, are having work done to your car, or are traveling for business. Additionally, these reservations can be booked on short notice.

The car subscription operates on a monthly basis: You book for at least 1 month and get your next car at a fixed price with the option to cancel monthly. Fees such as maintenance, taxes, repairs, and inspections are already included in the rental price, so you won’t be surprised at checkout or when you drop your rental back off. Keep in mind that SIXT+ Car Subscription reservations don’t earn you status or rental points.

Much of the SIXT+ Car Subscription fleet is comprised of luxury vehicles — think Mercedes-Benz and BMW — but you can also find convertibles, AWDs, and SUVs.

Partner Rewards Programs

SIXT partners with many airlines, including Avianca LifeMiles, Delta SkyMiles, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. SIXT also has over a dozen hotel partners, including Marriott Bonvoy and Radisson Rewards

You can even earn airline miles or hotel points instead of SIXT points simply by linking your preferred loyalty program through your SIXT account. Keep in mind that each program has different earning structures and requirements to earn points or miles, so make sure to read the requirements thoroughly.

SIXT Mobile App

The SIXT mobile app lets you check in online and skip the counter altogether. You can use the app to find offers, find information about nearby vehicles, and manage your reservations.

Download the app through the App Store or Google Play.

Status Matching From Other Car Rental Programs

SIXT offers status matching after you complete the registration form and upload proof of your current status.

If you have Avis Preferred and Preferred Plus, Europcar Discover, Hertz Gold, National Emerald Club, and Enterprise Plus and Silver, you can get status matched to SIXT ONE Gold.

You can match to SIXT ONE Platinum if you hold any of the following elite statuses: Avis President’s Club, Europcar Traveler, Adventurer and Navigator, Hertz Five Star and President’s Circle, National Emerald Club Executive and Executive Elite, and Enterprise Gold and Platinum.

Final Thoughts

SIXT is a car rental platform that offers short and long-term rentals via an easy-to-use website and mobile app. Signing up for a SIXT ONE account gets you access to exclusive benefits unavailable to nonmembers, but you get even more perks as you progress through the program.

We hope this guide was helpful as you make your reservation through SIXT ONE!
