I stayed at the Hotel Californian in the downtown “Funk Zone” of Santa Barbara, California, for a night in April 2026. Despite its prime location and luxury hotel credentials, I had a disappointing experience at this hotel, with an unclean room and hard-to-use amenities.

I’ll review how I booked the property and the pros and cons of my stay.

Booking Hotel Californian

I booked a night at the Hotel Californian, part of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, over Easter Sunday as part of a quick getaway to Santa Barbara that also included stays at the nearby Hyatt Mar Monte and Moxy Santa Barbara.

A gorgeous area known as the “American Riviera,” Santa Barbara hotel rates can be costly, especially downtown or along the beach.

Hotel Californian Lobby
Hotel Californian is bookable on most luxury hotel travel portals.

I chose Hotel Californian for Easter because it had a lower rate than the other days I considered. Because I booked it through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) using my Platinum Card® from American Express, I received a $300 prepaid hotel statement credit (up to $600 annually) and several on-property benefits.

I paid around $700 for 1 night before my statement credit. The $400 out-of-pocket cost was still a very significant amount for downtown Santa Barbara, but I considered it worth it. I’d walked past this hotel numerous times and always wanted to try it. This hotel is rarely under $600 a night.

I had several benefits available with my Fine Hotels + Resorts booking:

  • Early check-in, which was granted around 1 p.m.
  • Late checkout, which was granted for around 4 p.m.
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Room upgrade, based on availability
  • Complimentary breakfast
  • $100 on-property credit
Hot Tip:

This hotel can also be booked through The Edit by Chase Travel, Capital One Premier Collection, and The Reserve by Citi Travel, where cardholders of those issuers can receive benefits similar to those offered by Fine Hotels + Resorts.

Pros

The Room Was Spacious

I’m not sure it was an upgrade, but my room was large with a fireplace and patio.

Hotel Califonian King Bed Room
The guestroom was rather large.

The fireplace was very easy to use and operated via a wall switch. I turned it on during my stay, since Santa Barbara can get quite cool in the evenings, which added some nice ambiance and heat to the room.

Hotel Californian Fireplace
My room featured a fireplace in the corner.

Off to the left was a large work desk with a minibar area and several power outlets.

Hotel Californian King Room Desk
I appreciated the large desk to work from.

The bathroom was well-sized and featured a stand-up shower, toilet, and vanity. I appreciated the evening turndown service, where towels and other items were reset.

Hotel Californian Bathroom
The bathroom was modern with marble flooring and walls.

The shower in my room had buildup and seemed neglected — not just from 1 or 2 guests.

Hotel Californian First Stay Shower Grime
The bathroom in my room needed a deep cleaning.

The rest of the room seemed to be in decent shape, though I noticed the patio chairs had bird droppings and other marks on the backs.

Hote Californian Balcony
The large balcony provided a nice place to get some fresh air.

Breakfast Was Tasty

As part of my booking, I was given a $50 per-person, per-day credit for breakfast, and I could order from a menu.

Hotel Californian Breakfast Drinks
One nice thing about having a credit for breakfast is that I could order a Bloody Mary.

The menu featured basic selections like eggs and pancakes, as well as heartier options like the shakshuka I ordered. I also ordered a coffee and a Bloody Mary, and everything was brought promptly. I loved sitting outside and soaking in the Santa Barbara sun.

Hotel Californian Breakfast
My favorite benefit at this hotel was the breakfast. It was delicious and filling.

Cons

The $55 Resort Fee Didn’t Cover Anything Useful

At $55 a night, Hotel Californian has one of the highest resort fees in the area. It covered access to benefits that were either not explained or not useful for me:

  • 24-hour fitness center
  • Access to exclusive on-property activities and events
  • Beach chairs and umbrellas
  • Complimentary high-speed wireless internet access
  • Complimentary local calls
  • Complimentary local transfers
  • Complimentary tech and game library
  • Custom Hotel Californian bikes
  • Tesla and standard EV car chargers

Limited information about the resort fee benefits made most of these unusable. The complimentary local transfer was not explained to me at checkout, but there appeared to be a golf cart with a limited ride radius. Without an explanation, this benefit was useless, and I never saw the golf cart in use. The complimentary tech and game library wasn’t mentioned, either.

Guests could borrow bikes at the front of the hotel, but another vendor had cheap bikes across the street. And with Easter, there were no on-property events or activities — at least none I was told about.

Hotel Californian Fitness Center
The hotel has a fitness center across the street from the main building and lobby.

While resort fees are already a dubious practice, charging $55 for standard amenities or benefits that most guests don’t use at all is really a shame.

Hotel Californian Pool
This hotel’s rooftop pool was a huge redeeming quality.

I mentioned all of my frustrations to the front desk, and they said they’d seek approval to have the resort fee waived.

The FHR On-Property Credit Was Difficult To Use

With my Fine Hotels + Resorts booking, I had a $100 on-property credit that I intended to use for dinner.

The front desk suggested I could visit Blackbird, the hotel’s signature restaurant on State Street. I walked over to find it closed, as it’s always closed on Sundays and Mondays.

I returned to the front desk, where I was directed to The Society: State & Mason wine bar. I’m not much of a wine drinker, but I sat down, ordered a glass, and looked over the food menu, only to find out they weren’t serving food.

Hotel Californian Wine Bar
I had a nice glass of wine at the wine bar, but there was no food.

After finishing my glass of wine, I went back to the front desk and was directed to Goat Tree, the hotel cafe across the street.

Hotel Californian Goat Tree
The Goat Tree is the hotel’s primary dining establishment that’s open every day of the week.

When I entered the cafe, I couldn’t find any staff, so I gave up after 10 minutes.

Hotel Californian Goat Tree Cafe
It took multiple attempts to find staff working in the restaurant.

I was determined to use this credit, so I went across the street to the front desk, where they called the restaurant for assistance. I walked back to the cafe, met with a staff member who didn’t apologize for not being there, and ordered a few items from the menu. After a certain hour, the cafe switches to a to-go format, and my meal was packaged unimpressively.

Hotel Californian To Go Dinner
The dining room closed in the evening, and all food was to-go.

I ordered the mushroom-stuffed chicken with roasted rapini, papas bravas, and bacon agrodolce. I took the food back to my room, and while it was tasty, the whole experience made me question the hotel’s supposed stature as a premium property.

Bottom Line:

The Hotel Californian had a very confusing dining schedule. Confirm what’s open or closed with the front desk.

Follow-Up Visit

After my difficult stay, I had asked for a manager to reach out when I was checking out, but none were available at that time. I later received a call from a manager who apologized for the restaurant closures and the cleanliness issues. On the call, I was provided with a certificate for a complimentary night, which I accepted. The certificate covered the room rate, taxes, and resort fee, but did not provide the same Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits as my original stay.

I revisited the hotel in June 2026, hoping to see improvement, as it has enormous potential, and its State Street location could make it one of the best in Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, it appears the hotel did not take the cleanliness comments seriously. The room I was assigned had buildup throughout the shower area, particularly on the showerhead, which was bright green.

Hotel Californian Recent Stay Shower Grime
Unfortunately, the showerhead still had cleanliness issues.

My room on this second stay did not have a balcony, but it was a similar layout to my first room. I did not notice any other issues with my room or stay other than this shower issue, though admittedly, I didn’t put the hotel’s benefits to the full test since I had plans to eat elsewhere in town and didn’t have an on-site credit.

Final Thoughts

I had high hopes for this hotel. Within 1 block of the beach, 1 block of the city’s Amtrak station, and a short stroll into town, the location is fabulous. But that’s where a lot of the good stops. Hotel Californian charged a luxury rate but provided poorly maintained rooms, and the amenities and benefits were difficult to use. I’ll seek cheaper and cleaner rooms elsewhere in Santa Barbara.
