3 Nights at Hotel San Fernando, a Hyatt Bunkhouse Property in Mexico City (Review)

I spent 3 nights at this boutique property during the FIFA World Cup in June 2026. It had many positives, though a good stay here required realistic expectations. The list of amenities is incredibly short.

The trade-off was a fantastic location, friendly staff, and a reservation that required a low number of points. I’ve already booked another stay here for later this year, if that tells you anything. Here’s a closer look at what it’s like staying at Hotel San Fernando.

Booking Hotel San Fernando

Hotel San Fernando is part of the Bunkhouse Hotels brand, which Hyatt acquired in 2024. That means the hotel now participates in the World of Hyatt program. I’ve been curious about the brand, but I haven’t had a chance to check it out due to its limited footprint.

That changed when I found several nights of award availability at the cheapest Bunkhouse property in the World of Hyatt program: the Hotel San Fernando in Mexico City.

Hotel San Fernando is the lowest-category Bunkhouse property in World of Hyatt. As a Category 4 property, I booked this hotel for 15,000 points per night. It’s also possible to redeem a Category 1-4 free night award here.

Since my visit was during the FIFA World Cup, the room rate was $555 per night. Saving $555 per night by using 15,000 points gave me 3.7 cents per point in value — more than double our average valuation of Hyatt points at 1.4 cents each.

Outside of the World Cup period, the typical rate at Hotel San Fernando is around $300 per night. That still means you’re redeeming 15,000 Hyatt points at a value of 2 cents each.

Location of Hotel San Fernando

Hotel San Fernando sits in Mexico City’s Condesa neighborhood — the upscale, residential area that also houses the Category 4 Andaz Mexico City Condesa, which is also a World of Hyatt property.

It is very close to Parque Mexico — a great public space for relaxing or being active — which is surrounded by numerous bars and restaurants and is within walking distance of the Chilpancingo metro station.

Reaching the hotel from the Mexico City International Airport (MEX) takes 35 to 45 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

What It Was Like Staying at Hotel San Fernando

This isn’t the kind of hotel with polished service, tons of amenities, or an upscale stay that feels like a resort. However, this hotel offered a quiet neighborhood, local restaurants, and a hotel that’s part of a chain while feeling like it isn’t.

It Was Small and Felt Boutique

Hotel San Fernando has just 19 guest rooms; that’s it. Obviously, staying at a small property had some tradeoffs. It didn’t have a long list of amenities, but it also didn’t have a long list of … well, anything. Lines, crowds, and noise were nonexistent.

Staying at a small property also meant staff recognized me and knew my preferred breakfast beverage by the end of my stay.

There Was No Elevator

As an older building, it didn’t have an elevator for guests. Getting upgraded to a higher floor wasn’t an advantage here.

There was a small lift that staff used for luggage during check-in and checkout, which I was delighted about. Beyond that, I trekked several flights of stairs to my room each time I came, went, or had breakfast.

My Room Was Simple but Spacious

I stayed in the standard room, which is described as a King Bed with Kitchenette. I rate it as “fair.”

The sleeping area was at the far end of the room, offering a king bed that felt very low to the ground. There was an open wardrobe near the window and a closet (with a door) near the bed. Each side of the bed had a lamp and a small table.

There was a high-top table with wooden stools separating the sleeping area from the rest of the room. The sleeping area also had a dresser, a small safe, a TV, and a full-length mirror awkwardly leaning against the wall. I found a welcome gift of sweets on this table.

There wasn’t any air conditioning in the room, but there was a fan and a space heater, and I had a few coat hooks near the room’s entrance.

The kitchenette was in the middle of the room, with a sink, coffee and tea supplies, and a minifridge. I found drinks and snacks for sale in this area, along with filtered drinking water replenished daily by housekeeping.

The bathroom was near the room’s entrance. The area around the sink and toilet felt very tight, though the shower was spacious. There was almost no counter space around the sink, but a few shelves were underneath. The shower had handheld and rainfall options, and the pressure was great.

The Free Breakfast Was Limited for Non-Globalists

Breakfast is guaranteed daily with Hyatt’s top status, Globalist. As a Globalist, I chose a dish from the main breakfast menu at no cost.

The menu had options such as eggs, pancakes, and Mexican fare like chilaquiles. Juice and coffee were also included, though the hotel didn’t have any plant-based milk, such as almond or soy.

However, the free breakfast was limited for guests without Globalist status. There were a few pastries to choose from, a few sliced fruits, plus juice and black coffee — no espresso-based beverages included.

Guests could purchase items from the menu if they wanted more than the meager breakfast offering. The spread was less than the complimentary breakfasts I’ve encountered at Hyatt Place or Hyatt House properties.

Amenities Were Minimal

As a small, boutique property, the hotel didn’t offer a gym, spa, pool, or on-site parking. The only real amenities were the shop near reception and Wi-Fi.

The Ground Floor and Rooftop Provided Social Spaces

I hate when the only place to hang out at a hotel is sitting on your bed. Luckily, Hotel San Fernando had places to hang out on the rooftop and on the ground floor.

The restaurant/bar area on the ground floor had a rear seating area, which was nice because guests had a place to sit without feeling pressured to buy food or drinks if they hung out in the bar or dining area. Additionally, the rooftop had chairs and tables, and I wasn’t pressured to buy anything while sitting around enjoying the views.

Most Staff Members Were Friendly

The team at the reception desk was fantastic. I liked all of them; they were friendly and truly helpful.

I also liked nearly everyone at the ground-floor restaurant. On the first morning, the employee working breakfast was gruff, unhelpful, and seemed resentful that I ordered food instead of helping myself to the free items and leaving him alone.

However, he was the exception. The other employees were consistently friendly, offering popcorn when I watched World Cup games, smiling as they took orders, and treating me more like a friend than a hotel guest.

Everyone has a bad day sometimes. The other employees more than made up for the single bad experience.

Final Thoughts

The Hotel San Fernando is simple rather than luxurious, and it doesn’t pretend otherwise. There were areas for improvement, including a surly employee, but I loved the location, most of the staff, and the laid-back approach that didn’t come with a “buy food or get out” approach to the hotel’s communal spaces.

This is a great place for a low-key stay in a walkable area full of cafes, bars, and restaurants, and the value of using World of Hyatt points can’t be beat.
