The author stayed as an invited guest of The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya. All opinions are the author’s own, and The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya, had no input in any part of this review.

On a summer weekday, I was scrolling through Instagram, enjoying some travel content, when I stumbled upon a post about The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya, a luxurious hotel in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Those gorgeous Instagram photos really grabbed my attention, and I promised myself I would visit this luxury resort in the Riviera Maya at some point in the future. Well, I got to make that happen in early November 2024.

I found that this resort was nearly flawless for 2 demographics: couples seeking a romantic and peaceful escape and families who enjoy a relaxing vacation away from the hustle and bustle of the more touristy Cancun Hotel Zone.

Check out my experience and see what you might love when you visit!

Booking The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya

While my daughter and I were guests of The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya, on a media stay, I checked the rates for each month of the year. They were quite high, which isn’t surprising for an ultra-luxe brand like St. Regis. Rates start at $550 per night during off-peak times and can go over $1,000 during holidays and winter.

Fortunately, there is no resort fee to worry about.

If you’re paying cash rates, consider using one of our recommended credit cards for Marriott Bonvoy loyalists to maximize your points on hotel expenses.

If you prefer to redeem Marriott Bonvoy points, you can expect to spend between 80,000 and 130,000 points per night for a stay at The St. Regis Kanai, depending on your travel dates.

Hot Tip:

If you have the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card, you may be able to use the 85,000-point annual free night award certificate to get a complimentary night at this resort during off-peak dates.

Location of The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya

The St. Regis Kanai Resort is nestled in beautiful Riviera Maya, Mexico, right in the heart of the Kanai development. Kanai is a luxurious private neighborhood close to the coastal area of Playa del Carmen.

The resort is 1 of 3 resorts on an expansive 620-acre nature reserve that sits between The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai and Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection.

The resort debuted in March 2023 with just 124 rooms and 16 suites and was built both within and on top of mangrove swamp land, with the property’s developer preserving 90% of its natural habitat. The resort feels like it just opened its doors yesterday and is still in impeccable condition.

St. Regis Kanai mangroves
While the resort only features 124 total rooms, the grounds are enormous.

The location is directly in front of the Caribbean Sea, providing breathtaking ocean views and convenient access to fun activities like snorkeling, diving, and discovering the nearby cenotes and archaeological sites.

The St. Regis Kanai Resort is situated just a 35-minute drive from Cancun International Airport (CUN). A one-way taxi ride typically costs between $50 and $75, while the hotel’s private transfer option is around $100. It’s also ideally positioned only 30 minutes from Xcaret, a renowned eco-archaeological theme park.

Checking In

I hopped on the first JetBlue flight to Cancun (CUN) from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) on a Friday morning and touched down just a few minutes after 8 a.m. After being picked up at the airport by a private car transfer, I enjoyed a pleasant 35-minute drive to the resort.

As we arrived off the highway, we were greeted by a private security gate. I gave the security guard my name, and he verified I was a guest arriving for check-in.

The guard gate verifies if you’re a resort guest.

We proceeded to the resort gate over a paved road surrounded by manicured mangrove vegetation.

Once at the resort’s roundabout valet entrance, I was captivated by the beautiful architectural structures radiating from the ground.

St. Regis Kanai Valet area
Up the circular driveway is the resort’s valet area.

The white translucent panels beautifully line the sides of the structures, giving the resort a lovely open-aired feel.

St. Regis Kanai lobby seating
The aesthetics are stunning.

Artistic features were incorporated throughout.

Since I arrived before 9 a.m., my room wasn’t yet ready, but the helpful front desk associate suggested that I go enjoy breakfast at Chaya, one of the resort’s restaurants.

St. Regis Kanai Chaya Receptionist
Our room wasn’t ready yet, but we had breakfast.

After about an hour of enjoying my meal and strolling around the grounds to explore, I swung by the front desk and found out my room was ready.

St. Regis Kanai check in desk
The check-in area consists of just 2 reception desks.

Considering how peaceful the resort was and that I was the only guest at the check-in desk, I could sense that this stay would be quite different from my previous hotel stays in the Yucatán Peninsula, including those in the private complex of Mayakoba and the Cancun Hotel Zone.

St. Regis Kanai Water Feature
The resort exudes a zen-like energy at every turn.

Room

Upon reaching our designated room, 216, I noticed the sturdy wooden doors adorned with a contemporary lantern resting on the floor as a decorative element.

St. Regis Kanai Room Wooden Doors
A heavy-set wooden door like this seems like a good sign the room will be excellent.

As I was traveling with my daughter, we were assigned a second-floor Deluxe Guest room with 2 queen beds in the same building as the lobby, which turned out to be very convenient.

St. Regis Kanai deluxe queen beds
Our room was well-appointed and spacious.

Once inside our Deluxe Guest room, I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious it was. The room measures 592 square feet and includes a spacious terrace, making it suitable for even a family of 4.

St. Regis Kanai room view
Even the standard rooms start at a large 592 square feet.

Each guest room provides lovely ocean views. The rooms on the first floor have private plunge pools, while guestrooms on the second and third floors feature balconies that overlook the mangroves and offer water views at a distance.

The resort’s design was intentionally crafted to allow for ocean views from almost every angle in any room type.

St. Regis Kanai double queen room
Each room features views of the mangroves and ocean at a distance.

Our room type is what you would book into if you were redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points to stay here, and it felt more like an elevated option rather than simply a base-level accommodation.

The room featured a harmonious combination of shades, including white, beige, baby blue, and pale mint green, which blended seamlessly with limestone and walnut woodgrain.

St. Regis Kanai nightstand
This marble countertop nightstand table was a nice touch.

Next to each bed and between the beds were circular nightstand tables with marble tops. One even included a tabletop Tivoli audio radio.

Behind the 2 queen-sized beds was a beautiful wood panel inspired by Mayan design.

St. Regis Kanai back of bed decor
Mayan-inspired décor is everywhere at the resort, including the rooms.

Guestrooms included elegant ceramic light pendants that hung from the ceiling.

St. Regis Kanai Ceiling Lamps
The high ceilings gave the room an even grander feel.

In front of the beds, there was a cozy sitting area featuring 2 chairs and a small table.

St. Regis Kanai room sitting area
I slumped down on these chairs several times throughout my stay and watched TV.

I sat here a few times to watch Netflix on the mounted flatscreen TV.

St. Regis Kanai room TV
The TV programming featured U.S. and Mexico channels, plus streaming options like Netflix and Disney+.

On the left side of the sitting area, there was a credenza with a coffee machine, cups, and bottles of alcohol for purchase.

St. Regis Kanai cadenza
A credenza housed the minibar, coffee machine, and liquor bottles for purchase.

A Nespresso machine sat atop the minifridge with coffee cups for use.

St. Regis Kanai nespresso machine
As I do back home, I started my day with a shot of espresso.

Along with the coffee maker came a set of coffee pods.

St. Regis Kanai nespresso coffee pods
The Nespresso pods were replenished each day.

There was also a minifridge with several alcoholic items and chocolates available for purchase.

St. Regis Kanai in room minibar
Guests could purchase any alcoholic beverages from the minibar.

A standalone bronze-plated cart offered a selection of wine bottles, also for purchase.

A little push cart with wine bottles and prices added charm to the room.

My favorite feature of the room was the expansive terrace overlooking the mangroves and the ocean in the distance.

St. Regis Kanai terrace and balcony
Every room faces the natural mangroves and has views of the ocean from afar.

We spent a lot of time on the terrace, which featured a sunbed, a table, and 2 chairs.

My favorite aspect of the room was the view of nature!

Bathroom

Back inside the bedroom, there was a spacious open-concept bathroom.

St. Regis Kanai bathroom view
I’m a big fan of an open-concept bathroom — even if it lacks some privacy.

It featured a generous white soaking tub along with a robe, which I didn’t use, but it looked comfy.

St. Regis Kanai standalone bath tub
A large soaking tub faced the back wall of the bathroom.

I appreciated the strong water pressure in the separate glass-and-marble shower.

St. Regis Kanai shower
The shower featured a rain shower and shower handle to suit guests’ preferences.

The shower toiletries came from Sachajuan Algae Bioscience. This was the first time I had heard of the brand, but its shower products smelled great.

The dual sink vanity was strategically positioned in the center of the bathroom, complemented by hanging mirrors, allowing for generous space.

St. Regis Kanai vanity
The layout of the double vanity sink allows you to use the bathroom at the same time as someone else without bumping into each other.

The separate toilet room offered a degree of discretion due to its closet-like wooden paneling.

St. Regis Kanai room toilet
A separate toilet area had a door for additional privacy.

In terms of closet space, there was a walk-in closet next to the bathroom that featured hangers, drawers for clothing storage, and standard amenities you might find in most hotels, like a lockbox safe and a hair dryer.

St. Regis Kanai closet
Our room featured only 1 closet, but it was spacious enough to store our 2 pieces of luggage and clothing.

It’s worth mentioning that, as is the tradition with the St. Regis brand, you will have a dedicated butler around the clock, no matter which room you choose.

Eduardo, our assigned butler, contacted me via WhatsApp, and whenever I had a question about the resort, he responded promptly and was very helpful.

Amenities

The St. Regis Kanai is a hotel deliberately designed for discerning guests seeking a peaceful place to relax and unwind. Although you won’t find water sports or pool games here, there are enough amenities to keep you occupied.

Beach

To reach the beach and pools, guests can stroll along the wooden boardwalk, which begins near the lobby or right from the rooms.

St. Regis Kanai Walkway
The boardwalk path leads to the majority of the resort’s amenities — including the beach and pools.

While the stroll is only a few minutes long, it is beautiful, with mangroves and little fish swimming beneath.

St. Regis Kanai wooden deck walkway
We would look below the mangroves for wildlife like juvenile crocodiles.

The beach area isn’t the main attraction here. While the water is pleasant (don’t expect it to be perfectly crystal clear) and the waves are calm, the pools have a more enjoyable vibe.

That said, the resort does a fantastic job of cleaning up the sargassum (seaweed) each day to ensure guests aren’t inconvenienced.

St. Regis Kanai beach
The beach was tranquil and relaxing, with calm waves.

There’s ample space for guests to relax and enjoy themselves, with complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas available.

St. Regis Kanai beach views from lounger
Guests can enjoy complimentary beach loungers with an accompanying umbrella.

During our stay, we noticed very few people lounging on the beach; instead, most guests seemed to prefer the pool areas.

St. Regis Kanai beach loungers
The beach area offered a relaxing escape from the more busy pools.

Nestled between the beach and pool, there’s a lovely area featuring loungers, hammocks, and daybeds, perfect for guests looking to switch up their scenery from the beach and pool.

St. Regis Kanai beach sand area seating
There were plenty of seating options, reminiscent of a beach club.

Pools

The St. Regis has 2 spacious beachfront pool areas, with 1 designed for families and the other reserved for adults.

St. Regis Kanai Family Pool
The resort features 2 pools.

The family pool area features a spacious area (technically 2 separate pools) with numerous sunbeds, a few of which are placed right within the water.

St. Regis Kanai Family Pool and Jacuzzi
There’s a large hot tub, but the water temperature was the same as the pool.

Despite the stylish appearance of some pool seating areas, you may be surprised to learn that there is no additional fee to rent specific spots by the pool.

St. Regis Kanai Family Infinity Pool
I love a good-looking infinity pool facing the sand.

All seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis, except for the private cabanas.

St. Regis Kanai pool loungers and umbrellas
Guests can sit wherever they like, including in places that resemble VIP areas but are free for resort guests.

Many private cabanas surround the family-friendly pool and offer shelter from the weather, a long sofa, a large TV screen, and swim-up access. You can rent these cabanas for $500 a day.

St. Regis Kanai private cabana suites
The private cabanas start at $500 per day — for those who want ultra privacy.

The adults-only Beach Club pool is located not too far from the family pool — about a 3-minute walk.

St. Regis Kanai Beach Club Entrance
The Beach Club is where the adults-only pool is located.

The Beach Club offers a spacious swimming pool with direct ocean views, a separate hot tub, and a bar that serves cocktails and light snacks.

St. Regis Kanai Beach Club Adult pool
While much smaller than the family-friendly area, the adult-only pool is a quieter alternative.

The pools are available for use from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Spa

The St. Regis Spa is conveniently located near the lobby and operates by appointment only from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The spa offers treatments that draw from ancient practices and incorporate local ingredients. Signature treatments include the Secret Garden ritual, in which guests can choose ingredients from the hotel’s garden to create a personalized body scrub and mask.

I had the opportunity to take a brief tour of the spa. The waiting area offers a peaceful space with comfortable seating, allowing you to unwind as you await your treatment.

St. Regis Kanai Spa Waiting Area
Plenty of natural light and plants adorn the spa sitting area.

As you might expect from a well-regarded spa, there are amenities such as a sauna, steam room, whirlpool, cold plunge, and an outdoor relaxation pool available for guests to enjoy.

St. Regis Kanai Spa Pool
Only spa customers can access this private pool.

Fitness Center

The fitness center is conveniently located next to the spa and is open 24 hours a day.

St. Regis Kanai Fitness center sign
The fitness center is located right beside the spa.

It has the standard equipment for a complete hotel fitness center, including elliptical machines, exercise bikes, free weights, strength-training equipment, treadmills, and weight machines.

St. Regis Kanai fitness center machines
You can expect all the standard machines and free weights to complete a full-body workout.

One morning, my daughter and I visited the resort’s fitness center for a workout. She enjoyed the treadmill, elliptical, and rowing machine while I was content with the ample free weights for my weight training session.

The dumbells were perfect for my workout needs one morning.

The fitness center offers a range of fitness classes, including yoga and sound healing, as well as personal training options.

Kids Club

The resort has a dedicated kids club called The St. Regis Kanai Kids Club.

St. Regis Kanai Kids Club
The Kids Club is located right next to the family pool area.

This club is located just steps away from the family-friendly pool area, making it simple for families to participate in both without worrying about their children.

The kids’ club serves children aged 4 to 12 and offers programming with full-time kids club personnel available to teach and entertain the children. In the front, there’s a cute little shallow pool.

This small pool is perfect for the younger children to splash around.

It also had 2 mini soccer goals on a cozy little lawn.

St. Regis Kanai Soccer Kids Club
The kid-sized soccer nets were set up on the small lawn.

Kids can participate in fun activities like painting, exploring the resort’s native wildlife, or enjoying beach games and poolside entertainment.

Kids ages 4 through 12 can access the resort’s kids club.

The St. Regis Kanai Kids Club is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Library

This space serves as the resort’s library.

St. Regis Kanai The Library
The Library is ideal for guests who want a quiet place to unwind and collect their thoughts.

We were informed that this is a serene space where one can read one of the many books available or enjoy some tea and exquisite chocolates available in a glass case.

St. Regis Kanai The Library Seating
The glass case features fancy chocolates and tea for purchase.

The majority of the books in The Library were travel-related.

St. Regis Kanai The Library Books
The majority of the books on the shelves were travel-related.

While you could theoretically order cocktails here, throughout our visits, it felt more like a room with no staff, where guests could come in and unwind, rather than a traditional drinking establishment.

St. Regis Kanai The Library Inside
The sun beamed beautifully into The Library all 3 times I visited during the day.

The Library welcomes guests daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but we visited outside of these hours, and it seemed the space was accessible all day.

Jack’s Club

Without a doubt, my daughter’s and my favorite spot at the resort was Jack’s Club.

St. Regis Kanai Jacks Club Sign
Jack’s Club is the resort’s take on a speakeasy bar.

Jack’s Club at the St. Regis Kanai is a hidden speakeasy exclusively for adults. It features an outdoor deck with lounge chairs, umbrellas, and 2 plunge pools, perfect for guests to relax and enjoy.

St. Regis Kanai Jacks Club
This is a hidden entertainment area that gets popular among guests on rainy days.

It included a full-size pool table and a giant couch facing a large flat-screen TV, ideal for watching a big game.

St. Regis Kanai Jacks Club Lounge
I watched a football game while teaching my daughter how to play pool.

We had a blast playing foosball on the largest table I’ve ever seen, which could fit 4 players on each side.

St. Regis Kanai Jacks Club foosball 1
We had a blast competing against each other on this massive foosball table.

We decided to visit Jack’s Club daily instead of going to the main pools, and we often had the place all to ourselves.

Jacks Club Pool
Each day, we were the only resort guests taking advantage of the plunge pools at Jack’s Club.

While the space is technically a bar and adults-only, the staff was gracious enough to allow my daughter and me to enjoy it without restrictions, mainly since the bar was not operating. We even had lunch delivered from the pool area by a very kind waiter who brought it to us from the family pool.

Boutique

A small boutique store showcasing local clothing, branded hats, and various items can be found directly in front of The Library.

St. Regis Kanai store onsite
Local artisanal jewelry and hand-crafted clothing are available in the resort’s boutique store.

This store is run by a third-party operator and offers a selection of luxury, locally handcrafted goods for those who wish to shop a bit.

Parking

Parking at the resorts is offered at no cost, which also covers valet parking services.

While many guests prefer to stay on the property and others enjoy guided tours with included transport, if you’re interested in exploring the Riviera Maya independently, renting a car and parking for free at the resort is a great option.

Wi-Fi

I experienced no issues with Wi-Fi, even though the beach and pool areas were quite a distance from the resort’s buildings.

St. Regis Kanai Wi Fi
Wi-Fi speeds throughout the resort were strong. Image Credit: Speedtest

The Wi-Fi speed was quite reliable, even at the beach, allowing me to stream a game on my phone while relaxing by the pool without any interruptions.

Food and Beverage

I tried to visit all of the resort’s food and beverage outlets and sampled many to get a sense of the food quality.

Chaya

Just a short walk past the lobby, you’ll find Chaya, where executive chef Michael Grau is at the helm.

St. Regis Kanai Sign
Chaya is the resort’s primary restaurant for breakfast but is also ideal for a casual dinner.

It’s a beautiful spot for breakfast, offering both buffet and à la carte options, as well as dinner. The restaurant serves a blend of Mediterranean and Mexican cuisine, and the interior is stunning.

St. Regis Kanai Chaya Breakfast Indoors
Chaya has interior and exterior seating.

However, I’m a sucker for views and opted to sit outside at one of the outside tables, where the calming sounds of the water features and the lovely views of the mangroves and beach in the distance offer a unique atmosphere.

St. Regis Kanai Chaya Water Feature
While the inside is beautiful, the outside seating provides a more serene atmosphere.

The serene features, such as the waterfall display beneath where I was eating, contributed to a soothing and captivating ambiance during breakfast.

St. Regis Kanai Fountains
I enjoyed the soothing sound of water cascading over the rocks.

We opted for the buffet, which is reasonably priced for a hotel of this caliber, at approximately $35 per person.

St. Regis Kanai Buffet
The breakfast buffet had a variety of options.

Inside, you will find a selection of baked goods consisting of bagels, croissants, and homemade donuts.

Items were baked fresh daily.

An omelet station is set up for guests who want made-to-order eggs.

You can order your omelet at your table or at the omelet station.

The buffet includes a selection of local specialties, fresh fruit, cold cuts, and a variety of yogurts.

I’m always excited to try exotic fruit when I arrive in a Latin American country.

Outside was a station where you could create your own Mexican dishes like tacos and tostadas.

St. Regis Kanai Chaya Mexican Cuisine Outdoors
I spent most of my breakfast calories dining on Mexican cuisine for breakfast.

We decided to whip up our own pork tostadas every day, and they truly exceeded our expectations.

These authentic pork tostadas with hot sauce were filled with flavor.

I ordered an egg white omelet with everything, which was delicious.

For added protein, I ordered an egg white omelet with everything in it.

Chaya is open every day for breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. and dinner from 5:30 to 11 p.m.

Toro

The resort’s featured restaurant is Toro, created by chef Richard Sandoval, offering a Latin-inspired menu in a welcoming bar and dining space.

St. Regis Kanai Toro Front Sign
Toro is the resort’s most upscale dining option.

On our last night, we had the opportunity to dine at Toro, and my daughter mentioned how lovely the restaurant was in the evening.

The ambiance at Toro during the evening is magical.

For dinner, I ordered a sushi roll, the rollo acevichado, featuring the fresh catch of the day as the fish, leche de tigre, shrimp tempura, salsa, and tobiko, which were all quite good.

The sushi rolls are inspired by a fusion of Japanese and Mexican flavors.

My daughter ordered the short rib tacos, and based on her 11-year-old taste buds, she thought they were incredible.

Toro welcomes guests for dinner from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Riviera

Riviera, a stylish, casual restaurant open just for lunch, serves popular poolside fare such as pizza, fish tacos, salads, and more.

St. Regis Kanai Riviera Restaurant
We didn’t eat at Riviera, but we ordered Riviera pool food.

The family pool has complementary daybeds positioned virtually on top of the pool, so we requested lunch from our daybed, which was prepared by Riviera, and enjoyed a laid-back meal at the pool.

Comfort food from Rivieria served poolside.

Riviera is only open during the day between the hours of 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The St. Regis Bar

We had 2 nights free for dinner, and we chose to spend 1 of those nights at the St. Regis Bar.

St. Regis Kanai Bar Paint Art
This mural at the St. Regis Bar beautifully illustrates the sun and the moon coming together in harmony.

As is tradition at all St. Regis properties worldwide, the evening Champagne sabering ceremony was set to take place at the St. Regis Bar.

I was eager for my daughter to witness it herself.

We witnessed the tradition of the Champagne sabering ceremony and stayed for a bite to eat.

After the Champagne sabering ceremony, we ordered 2 bowls of pork ramen from the kitchen for dinner.

The pork ramen soup was okay — I wish I had ordered something else.

They were okay, but nothing really stood out to make them memorable.

During our meal, our waitress pleasantly surprised us with a complimentary mango and coconut sorbet, which was delicious.

The St. Regis Bar is open for drinks and light bites every day from 5 to 11 p.m.

Pik Nik

Service

Excellent service is always the standard when staying at luxury brands like the St. Regis.

This was true at The St. Regis Kanai. Every interaction I had with every staff member was genuine, and there was always a hello greeting, whether I had seen them 10 times or never before. The outstanding service made quite an impression on me.

Final Thoughts

The St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya, is a gorgeous luxury property that caters to couples looking for a romantic retreat and families seeking a relaxing break from life’s frenetic pace.

The resort’s attractive remote location, superb on-site dining options, and the beauty of the hotel itself make it a desirable choice for travelers looking for a top-notch resort in the area. I can’t wait to return, next time with the whole family.
