Bangkok, the bustling metropolis and capital of Thailand, has so much to offer travelers. From world-class nightlife to incredible night markets to historic temples, Bangkok is a must-visit destination. The city keeps bringing me back — my most recent trip was my sixth visit in the last 4 years. However, this was my wife’s first time.

For our last night in the city, I wanted to book a luxury hotel — and fortunately, Bangkok has many of them. Ultimately, I booked a 1-night stay at the Sukhothai Bangkok, an SLH Hotel.

Here’s an in-depth look at my experience at the luxury property and why you should consider staying there when traveling to Bangkok.

Booking the Sukhothai Bangkok

After a wonderful week in Bangkok, my wife and I decided to book a luxury hotel for our last night there. Since I had visited Bangkok several times at this point, I had stayed in many of the city’s best hotels.

I wanted to stay at a new property, so I narrowed my choice to 2 Hilton properties: the Conrad Bangkok and the Sukhothai Bangkok. After comparing the cash and points prices, I opted for the Sukhothai Bangkok for a simple reason: I received a much better value from my Hilton Honors points.

For our April 2025 stay, cash prices for the Sukhothai Bangkok ($317 per night) were 78% higher than the Conrad Bangkok ($178 per night).

The Sukothai Bangkok vs Conrad Bangkok cash price

However, the points price difference between the properties was relatively small (only 5,000 Hilton points). A standard room at the Sukhothai Bangkok could be booked for just 45,000 points per night.

The points redemption price between the 2 properties was negligible. Image Credit: Hilton

According to our valuations, Hilton Honors points are worth 0.5 cents per point, making 45,000 points worth $225. With cash rates for a standard room over $300, including taxes and fees, I got significantly more value from my Hilton points.

I booked a Deluxe Room Queen room, the cheapest room available. I hoped my top-tier Hilton Honors Diamond Elite status would get me upgraded to a nicer room.

Sukhothai Bangkok Location

The Sukhothai Bangkok is in Bangkok’s central business and embassy district, a short walk from the famous Lumphini Park.

The property is a 10-minute walk from Lumphini Metropolitan Rapid Transit Station, a stop on the MRT Blue Line. It is also less than a 15-minute walk from Sala Daeng Bangkok Mass Transit Skytrain Station. Between these 2, you can easily get around Bangkok.

Getting There

The Sukhothai Bangkok is a 35-minute drive from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK). If you are arriving from Don Mueang International Airport (DMK), Bangkok’s smaller airport, the journey takes approximately 30 minutes by car.

You can also reach the property using public transportation. As long as you can connect to the BTS Skytrain or the MRT Blue Line, getting to the Sukhothai Bangkok is easy.

Checking In

My wife and I arrived at the Sukhothai Bangkok shortly before 10 a.m., several hours before the hotel’s official check-in time of 2 p.m. As we exited our Grab taxi, we were greeted by a friendly bellman and a hotel representative who welcomed us to the property and walked us to the check-in counter.

As we approached the check-in desk, we stopped to admire the massive roselle floral arrangement in the center of the lobby.

We were greeted by a friendly check-in representative who welcomed us to the property. He then requested our passports to look up our reservation.

After confirming our 1-night reservation, he thanked me for my Hilton Honors Diamond Elite status and told us that he had upgraded us to an Executive Suite. Best of all, he mentioned that the room was ready immediately and that our bags would be sent up to the room.

Within a minute, another hotel representative approached the check-in desk and handed my wife and me welcome drinks and refreshing towels. The beverage was a roselle tea, which was delicious.

The front desk representative informed us that the hotel was a Hilton Honors partner and that specific elite status benefits applied to the property, like a complimentary breakfast and a late checkout. However, certain benefits, like complimentary Executive Club Lounge access, did not apply at the Sukhothai Bangkok.

He then asked if we wanted a 4 p.m. late checkout, to which we agreed. Lastly, he requested a credit card for incidental charges. I handed him my Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card, which is the card I use for all Hilton charges.

The front desk agent then handed us our room key cards and informed us that our room was on the third floor of the main building.

After completing the check-in process, the check-in agent politely asked if he could walk us to our room, a simple yet thoughtful gesture. However, we said we wanted to walk around the lobby before heading to the room. He said that we could take our time and that he would walk us up whenever we were ready.

Bottom Line:

Overall, the check-in process was incredibly efficient. Within a couple of minutes, the staff member was ready to direct us to the room. He did a great job explaining what benefits were included with my Hilton Diamond status and which ones were not. The complimentary welcome drink was nice.

As a Hilton Honors Diamond Elite member, I received several benefits at the hotel:

Lobby

The hotel lobby was relatively simple, with 2 large, identical seating areas, divided by a hallway leading to several of the hotel’s food and beverage venues and the guest floor elevators.

From the windows in the right seating area, you could see a row of red brick Buddhist stupas in a courtyard, which added a nice historical touch to the hotel.

The colonnade-style hallway was well-lit and created a feeling of relaxation, so much so that I nearly forgot I was in one of the world’s busiest cities.

As we walked down the hallway, we eventually reached the hotel’s guest floor elevators.

Bottom Line:

The Sukhothai Bangkok’s lobby was incredibly large and spacious, creating a relaxing atmosphere worthy of a luxury 5-star property. The outdoor courtyards also invoked a serene feeling.

Executive Suite Room

As we got off the elevator on the third floor, we walked down a hallway to our room.

I loved the property’s indoor-outdoor design, which made it feel like we were in a villa on a remote island.

The suite had a double door design, which added to the luxury appeal of the hotel.

I felt like royalty walking into this massive suite.

As we entered the room, we were greeted by a spacious foyer. To the left was the entrance to the suite’s main bathroom, and on the right, the suite’s powder room.

Walking straight through the foyer led to the main living area. I was pleasantly surprised by the ample space there.

There was a sofa and a loveseat with an ottoman. Both were decorated with vibrant throw pillows.

There was also a massive, round, glass coffee table, which featured complimentary welcome snacks from the hotel.

This included a fruit bowl containing apples, an Asian pear, guavas, and a dragon fruit. There were also chocolate truffles and traditional coconut-based Thai desserts.

The suite’s extremely comfortable king-size bed was against the back wall, between 2 large tables. The bed featured 4 comfortable pillows and thick bedding.

There were wall-mounted lamps and reading lights on both sides of the bed. Each side of the bed also had an AC power outlet.

The hotel’s housekeeping staff even placed towel art in the shape of 2 swans, with real flower petals.

The other entrance to the bathroom was on the left side. On the wall, there was a stone carving.

The table to the left featured another interesting stone-carved Buddha. There was also a booklet containing information about the hotel and a door hanger menu for in-room breakfast.

The Buddha statue was attractive.

On the table was also a tablet that controlled many of the room’s features, including the light controls, air conditioning settings, and the alarm clock.

I could also request services from the tablet, such as making up the room, picking up laundry, and picking up luggage.

You could control several room settings with the tablet.

Lastly, the suite’s windows were to the right of the bed. Unfortunately, the room did not have much of a view.

Bottom Line:

Overall, I was very impressed with the suite. I loved the suite’s layout and spaciousness, and I also liked how comfortable the furniture was. I thoroughly appreciated the hotel’s effort with the complimentary fruit platter and desserts.

Bathroom

The suite’s bathroom was the most spacious I have ever encountered in a hotel room. It featured 2 entrances: one from the foyer and one from the bedroom section of the suite.

The bathroom was filled with floor-to-ceiling mirrored walls, a stark difference from the all-marble bathrooms at many other luxury hotels.

The bathroom featured 2 identical vanities directly opposite each other. The hotel provided a whole host of complimentary standard hotel toiletries.

Food and Beverages

The Sukhothai Bangkok featured several on-site food and beverage venues, ranging from a pastry shop to a pool bar to Michelin-recommended restaurants.

Here’s a look at what you can expect at the dining establishments at the Sukhothai Bangkok.

Colonnade

Colonnade is the hotel’s international dining venue. It is open daily for breakfast between 6:30 and 10:30 a.m. and for brunch between noon and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Colonnade features an international menu with various Asian specialties.

Guests with Hilton Honors Gold or Diamond status and those who book rates with breakfast included can have complimentary breakfast here. Breakfast costs ฿1,300 (about $40) for those who do not have it included.

My wife and I arrived at breakfast shortly before 9 a.m. to an incredibly packed restaurant. Although the hotel felt relatively quiet and peaceful throughout the stay, the same could not be said about breakfast.

After being seated by a restaurant staff member, we looked through the breakfast buffet offerings. The first section featured a selection of sushi rolls and hot food, including miso soup, Japanese rice, pan-fried seabass fillet, and chicken and vegetable gyoza.

There was also a salad bar with a fantastic selection of toppings and dressings. Although I did not try anything from the salad bar, my wife said everything was fresh and tasty.

There was a massive bakery and pastry selection, including different types of bread, croissants, muffins, and carrot cake. There was also a made-to-order station where guests could request waffles, pancakes, and French toast.

Fantastic bakery spread.

Lastly, the breakfast buffet featured a good selection of fresh fruits. The pineapple and watermelon were incredibly sweet and delicious.

I love fresh fruit in the morning.

After looking at everything the buffet had to offer, we returned to our seats to enjoy our breakfast. The smoked salmon and sushi rolls were delicious, and the bakery featured incredibly tasty pastries.

Bottom Line:

The Colonnade breakfast buffet had a good selection of food. The food was fresh and constantly replenished, and the restaurant workers were quick to respond to requests.

Unfortunately, the breakfast buffet was extremely packed, making the experience feel out of place and less enjoyable. The hotel was so quiet and relaxing, but the breakfast buffet was incredibly noisy, taking away from the luxury feel of the hotel.

Service

I found the staff and service at the Sukhothai Bangkok to be excellent, which is what we expected from a luxury hotel in Thailand.

The staff provided genuine hospitality and were there to answer any and all questions and requests without hesitation. I loved how the hotel staff greeted us by name and bowed to us whenever we interacted.

The staff placed a complimentary fruit basket and Thai desserts in our room prior to our arrival. The housekeeping staff also created a romantic honeymoon towel art display on the bed. These little acts of service are always appreciated, as they differentiate good hospitality from great hospitality.

When we went out to dinner in the evening, we returned to another dessert and a bouquet of flowers in our room. This was a nice surprise, as I’d briefly mentioned that my wife and I were on an extended honeymoon.

Final Thoughts

The Sukhothai Bangkok is a garden oasis in urban Bangkok. The property is luxurious, private, and does creates an atmosphere of pure relaxation in the busy Thai capital. The location is excellent — just a short walk from Lumphini Park and both an MRT and BTS station.

I absolutely love staying at luxury hotels, and I am extremely glad I chose the Sukhothai Bangkok, even if it was just for 1 night. Best of all, I got tremendous value from my Hilton Honors points.

I would absolutely consider staying at the Sukhothai Bangkok again. However, I like having new experiences, I’ll still consider other luxury properties in the city to see how they stack up.
