Air New Zealand has a fairly standard baggage policy, with reasonable charges for extra checked luggage booked online up to 3 hours before departure for international flights.

It’s worth planning ahead, as excess baggage charges at check-in are more than double the cost of adding a bag in advance — so be sure to take advantage of this!

Can I Pre-pay for Baggage?

Air New Zealand does allow passengers the ability to pre-pay for luggage online or via their contact center up to 3 hours before an international flight and up to 30 minutes before a domestic flight.

Here are the ways you can pre-pay:

Recommended Cards That Reimburse Your Baggage Fees:

Capital One® VentureOne® Rewards Credit Card - This no annual fee card comes with a 20,000 mile welcome bonus (worth $200) once you spend $1,000 within the first 3 months. When you use your card for travel purchases (e.g. baggage fees), use your miles to pay off all, or part of, your statement! This is why we like this card.
Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card - The "big brother" card to the VentureOne® with a larger 50,000 welcome bonus (worth $500), when you spend $3,000 within the first 3 months, and you'll earn 10X miles per $1 spent across thousands of hotels.

Exclusions & Waivers

Koru members and Gold, Elite, and Elite Partner frequent flyer tiers can take a free extra bag on top of the standard allowance for their own fare (not a family member’s fare). This excludes business and seat Fares.

  • For economy fares to Shanghai, Singapore, and Taipei, the baggage allowance is 2 checked bags.
  • From 19 September 2018 for economy fares departing Australia to the U.S. (excluding Honolulu), South America, and Canada, the baggage allowance is 2 checked bags.
