Allegiant Air Baggage Fees & Tips To Cover The Expenses

While Allegiant Air offers budget base ticket pricing, you’re likely to owe more than you might expect in baggage fees. For example, Allegiant charges a fee for standard carry-on luggage, which increases the longer you wait to purchase.

It’s also important to note the max weight for a checked bag is 40 pounds (compared to the general average of 50 pounds) and the same time sensitive fees apply for purchasing checked baggage.

Allegiant Air’s baggage policy isn’t overly confusing, it’s just pricey. Essentially, for the cheapest possible outcome, know the number of bags you’re planning to bring (keeping in mind the decreased weight allowance) and pay for them at your initial booking.

  • Each fare-paying passenger is allowed to take one car seat and/or 1 stroller to the boarding gate to be checked free of charge, or may check these at the ticket counter.

  1. Cheryl Simmons November 15, 2018

Is the above picture stating that even if my carry on is the right size, if the handle comes at the top (with the suitcase vertical) it will cost me extra money?

    • Hi Cheryl, we’re not quite sure what you’re asking – the featured image is simply an image for the purpose of getting the point across that this is an article about baggage fees.

That being said, when measuring your case, the dimensions include all wheels and handles, with the handle in the collapsed position. It’s very likely Allegiant will make you fit your bag in their sizer before considering it a carry-on that will fit so I would either call them directly to inquire or air on the side of caution. Hope this helps.

      • Are costs for luggage based on a round trip or is it each way????

      • tiffany crum April 28, 2021

I purchased a 20″ carry-on with wheels from JC Penny which states can be used for carry-on. I received it today and it’s 23″ even though the tag states 20″. Will I get charged extra for a 1-inch difference?

        • Hi Tiffany,

If Allegiant decides to measure your bag, which they may or may not, then yes it is likely that you will charge you an oversized bag fee.

  2. stephanie mccance December 12, 2018

Is there any way to change that you want to have a checked bag when you already selected carry on when you booked the flight?

    • Hi Stephanie, have you tried logging in on and accessing your flight confirmation that way? I can’t confirm with 100% certainty but there may be a way to add baggage from that angle. (You may have to create an account if you haven’t already…)

Otherwise, we suggest contacting Allegiant’s Customer Service directly at 1 (702) 505-8888. Hope this helps!

  3. If my bags are overweight I know there will be a fee. Can I use cash to pay for it? Or does it have to be a credit card?

    • Catherine Luther April 12, 2019

      Hi Sarah,

Allegiant Air doesn’t specify on their website if they accept cash payments for baggage fees. Many airlines only accept card payments, so we recommend you contact their Customer Service department on (702) 505-8888 to check their policy for the airport you’re departing from.

  4. Can you pay to check baggage at the airport with cash or do I need a credit card?

    • Hi Heather, it’s become increasingly more common for airlines to refuse cash as a form of payment at the airport. Unfortunately, this varies from airline to airline and from airport to airport, so the only way to confirm is to call Allegiant’s customer service line (1-702-505-8888 from the U.S.) and inquire with them directly.

  5. Hi Erin

The carry on maximum baggage dimensions are 9✖️14✖️22.
My case is 10✖️14✖️22. How strict is Allegiante air with over size carry on and what re the over size fees? I paid $30 for the carry on option.

    • Hey Tim, Allegiant is notorious for being pretty darned strict… BUT I’ve never heard of them taking out a tape measure. If you can shove that bag in the little sizing frame then you get to take it with you. Some people’s become just a little more compact taking into account give at the zippers. Good luck!

    • One person on my itinerary is not able to make the flight any longer. Is there any way we can still use the checked bag I purchased that’s associated with her name but on the same itinerary?

      • Hi Hailey, this is a special circumstance which Allegiant does not outline in their information available to the public online. Since we’re not Allegiant Air, we’re not able to answer your question with 100% confidence.

I suggest you call Allegiant’s customer service and inquire with them directly (1-702-505-8888 from the U.S.). Sorry to not be of more help!

  6. Susan Lansdiwn June 15, 2019

Can a CPAP (medical machine) go free as another personal item?

    • Hi Susan! Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a CPAP machine is not considered carry-on luggage and does not count toward your carry-on quota. So yes, you can bring your CPAP on for free and still be allowed your second personal item.

      Thanks for reading!

  7. I have 2 sons that want to take fishing poles. I have read both u can take, just no hooks & also has to be checked under the plane. Does anyone know the rules on taking fishing poles with you?

    • Hi Sylvia! This is what Allegiant states online in their published contract of carriage:

“Each piece of sporting equipment will be considered a checked bag with all applicable fees applied per person, per bag, per segment. All Baggage Fees are non-refundable except as provided in Article 65 below. Each bag must weigh 40 lbs or less and the outside measurements of each bag must not exceed eighty (80) inches. Applicable fees will be applied for those bags exceeding the weight and size limits. The total number of bags allowed may not exceed 5 per passenger.

Sporting Equipment – The following sporting equipment will be considered as an additional checked bag when in a container acceptable to Carrier:

      8. Fishing tackle box and fishing rod: so long as the rod is encased in a cylindrical fishing rod container suitable to Carrier for withstanding normal checked baggage handling without sustaining damage to the rod.”

Hope this helps! If you’re still confused, we suggest calling Allegiant’s customer service directly for clarification! 🙂

  8. Natasha Butler June 23, 2019

I purchased my ticket with kiwi and I need to add baggage.

    • Hi Natasha, we’re not sure what you’re asking here? Do you mean you need to know how to add baggage? Did you attempt the instructions above under the “Can I Pre-pay for Baggage?” section?

  9. Sabrina Mohan July 24, 2019

Hello. I am traveling to Florida…I paid for one checked bag when I booked flights, can I add a checked bag if necessary? Also can I put deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and makeup in my checked bag? If so what sizes bottles…tya

    • Catherine Luther July 25, 2019

      Hi Sabrina,

Passengers are able to check up to 4 bags with Allegiant Air and you should be able to purchase baggage by logging in to your booking under the ‘Manage Travel’ section on Allegiant’s website. You can pack toiletries such as shampoo and deodorant in your checked bag with no limit on bottle sizes – this only applies to carry-on luggage.

  10. Tami Floodine July 24, 2019

    • Catherine Luther July 25, 2019

      Hi Tami,

Thanks for highlighting this. We have amended the article.

      Thank for reading!

  11. Hi, I have paid for 2 pieces of baggage but we only need 1. Is there a way we can get reimbursed? We are traveling in 2 weeks.

  12. Can I carry a hand bag with my personal item (backpack).

  13. Stephanie melone August 8, 2019

Can I add baggage after I have checked in on the app? It’s not allowing me to select checked bags after I have checked in online or on the app. Can you advise?

    • Catherine Luther August 9, 2019

      Hi Stephanie,

Usually airlines allow passengers to add baggage prior to or during the online check-in process. Give Allegiant a call to see if this is still possible.

    • That is not right. Parents of 2 children can have carseats, strollers and diaperbags for free! But a single mom can’t take a purse?!

    • Joyce Stoddard April 24, 2021

I need to know if I can add a check on baggage after I have already paid for my ticket – round trip

      • Hi Joyce,

Yes, you can add additional baggage by managing your trip through the Allegiant mobile app or Allegiant website. Safe travels!

  14. Damain McLeod August 9, 2019

I’ve had different experiences flying with my bike using Allegiant. At some airports I pay whatever the regular baggage fee is but at others the tell me because it’s a bike I will be charged an additional $100!? If I am not taking a whole bike complete and merely pieces and they fit in my suitcase with out being over weight, why am I charged extra

    • Catherine Luther August 10, 2019

      Hi Damain,

That must be really frustrating. Unfortunately, Allegiant does not detail their policy for bike transportation on their website so it’s recommended that you contact Allegiant directly to check their policy. They may be able to send you confirmation by email that you could show the check-in agents next time you’re challenged on this.

  15. kathy sharp August 26, 2019

I will have my purse plus a food bag is that allowed?

  16. Arne Kesler August 26, 2019

Can I check golf clubs with a soft bag? I have no problem with a waiver.

  17. Me and my husband and 2 toddlers will have 2 suitcases, 2 car seats, a stroller and a
Pack n play playpen. What is free
And what do I need to pay for? Cvg to florida

    • Catherine Luther September 2, 2019

      Hi Kim,

Each fare-paying passenger is allowed to take one car seat and/or stroller to the boarding gate to be checked free of charge.

Checked baggage is not included in the ticket with Allegiant so you will need to book this separately – $45 per bag pre-departure or around $50 at the airport. It’s likely the play pen would need to be checked for a fee but as we’re not Allegiant Air we can’t confirm this for you. Checked bags must not exceed 40 lbs or max linear dimensions of 80 inches.

  18. Benjamin Gordon Moritz September 22, 2019

Hi, we are flying to Fort Walton and are wondering how much shampoo and make up you can bring on your personal and carry on bags.

  19. Marjorie Short October 5, 2019

My husband and I have already purchased a ticket to fly to Tennessee, we were told we are allowed one free pet in the cabin since he is a veteran. The airline said this was okay and we are now trying to find a carrier that meets your regulations. The only thing we have found which is airline approved on the carrier is more than 7 inches high, and we can’t find one that small. The puppy will be flying back with us and she weighs around 2 lb or less. What are your suggestions? The carrier I have is collapsable.

    • Hi Marjorie,

Please be advised that we are not, and have no affiliation with Allegiant airlines. We are an educational travel website that provides helpful information to travelers. I recommend you contact the Allegiant Airlines customer service team so that they can give you an exact answer to your question.

      Thanks for reading!

  20. Hi
I plan to buy my in-the-future Allegiant ticket at the airport, would I pay airport price for a checked bag, or is it considered “at booking,” since my trip is not that day?

    • Catherine Luther October 21, 2019

      Hi Joy,

I would imagine you will pay the airport price as this would require processing by a customer agent rather than being automatically applied online.

      • If you purchase your ticket in advance at the airport and include a bag with the purchase, the bag will cost the same as if you had purchased a ticket online and prepaid your bag. I often do this. It will also save you a hefty convenience fee which Allegiant charges for online ticket purchases but are not charged at the airport. Be sure to check to see when the Allegiant desk is open for ticket sales. At my airport, it is just 6 hours per week.

  21. If I already did the prepay of 40 dollars and my bag is overweight by 5 pounds, how much more will I have to pay?

  22. after reading…I’m still a bit confused about golf bags. my golf bag is 60 inches tall, 14 inches wide, and weighs 25 lb. is that $50, $75, or another amount?

    thank you

  23. Rebecca Reed June 1, 2020

    Couple questions.
    1. I made a mistake and paid for a checked bag when needing to pay for a carry-on. Do I need to call about it, or is it possible to fix online?
    2. Allegiant Air doesn’t have a policy for musical instruments. And it is not required by law to purchase another ticket. Do I need to call about my options?

    Asking online for future reference.

    • Hi Rebecca,

Yes, it appears you will need to call to adjust your checked bag to a carry-on bag.

How large is the musical instrument you’re transporting? Here is Allegiant’s policy on musical instruments. Scroll down to section 46, line F to find the applicable section. Or simply use your computers text finder and search the words “musical instrument”.

      Thanks for reading!

  24. Kristin B. June 15, 2020

If my free personal bag is within the size requirements, can I pack it with some of my clothes, hair straightener, and toiletries (3-1-1 rules)? Leaving out of Sanford and going to Albany, NY.

  25. Hi, I am flying with my daughter. We both have an overhead bag and personal bag. I also have a small pocketbook, is this allowed?

  26. Rohan Hatti June 18, 2020

What is meant by pre-departure baggage price? I have booked a flight from Cincinnati to Denver on July 3,2020.

    • Hi Rohan,

The pre-departure price is the price you pay after having completed your booking, but prior to your travel date, in order to bring a carry-on bag or checked bag. If you pay in advance the price is $45. If you weight until you’re at the airport the price goes up to $50. If you do not pay for your carry-on bag until you arrive at the gate then the price goes up to $75.

      Thanks for reading!

  27. Mitchell Niedbala June 21, 2020

I have a skate board that starts on to my backpack and is 27 inches. Can this still be considered a personal item if it is strapped into my bag?

  28. Can I check a soft sided golf bag?

  29. Bobby Gray July 16, 2020

Can I check a hard golf bag?

    • Hi Bobby,

Yes, you can check a hard golf bag as long as it is under 40 pounds. If it exceeds 40 pounds then Allegiant will charge you $50 if it is between 40-70 pounds and $75 if it is between 71 to 100 pounds.

  30. Bobby Gray July 16, 2020

Question one bag is under 40 lbs and and 60 total inches but the second bag is under 40lb but 82 inches?

    • Hi Bobby,

Since your second bag exceeds the allowable limit of 80 inches they might charge you a $75 fee to bring it. This is only if they measure the dimensions of the bag though, and since the dimensions are close they might not think to do so.

      Safe travels!

  31. Crystal Gladney August 3, 2020

What is Allegiant’s policy on cremains?

    • Hi Crystal,

You’re permitted to travel with cremains provided that they are in a sealed container. Make sure to let TSA know when going through security as well.

      Thanks for reading!

  32. I’m taking my first flight soon and it’s with my 6-month-old! Is there a size limit for his diaper bag? Should it be within their personal size limit (7 x15 x 16)?

    • Hi Honor,

Allegiant does not appear to list a size restriction for diaper bags on its website, but I would imagine if you kept it within the personal size limit, or around there, that there would be no issues.

  33. Do I get a free checked or carry-on bag if I have the allegiant credit card?
