BB&T, which stands for Branch Banking and Trust Company, is a North Carolina-based bank dating all the way back to 1872.

Although it’s still colloquially known as BB&T today, the truth is that this company merged with SunTrust Bank in December 2019 to form Trust Financial.

The result is a massive financial services company spanning 16 states (including Washington, D.C.) with more than 2,000 branches dotted around the U.S.

BB&T and SunTrust still offer (for now) independent product lines, which means that they will have different credit cards for a while.

In this guide, we’ll show you all the best rewards credit cards from BB&T, as well as how to maximize BB&T’s rewards system: Spectrum Rewards.

What Is BB&T Spectrum Rewards?

BB&T Spectrum Rewards is the umbrella term for any rewards earned from a BB&T credit card.

In this case, there are 2 subsets of Spectrum Rewards:

  • Spectrum Travel Rewards
  • Spectrum Cash Rewards

BB&T’s credit cards are all offered by Visa, which is great because of its near-universal acceptance globally.

BB&T Spectrum Rewards expire 5 years after they are earned. You can gift rewards to another BB&T rewards program, which then expires 1 year after the date of gifting.

Hot Tip: If you close your BB&T Spectrum Rewards cards, you’ll immediately forfeit your points, so make sure to use your rewards if you’re considering closing your card!

Spectrum Travel Rewards Cards

Spectrum Travel Rewards is BB&T’s flagship rewards program, designed to reward its clients who find value in travel-based rewards. Let’s look at the 3 credit cards that offer access to Spectrum Travel Rewards.

As the main consumer travel rewards card offered by BB&T, the BB&T Spectrum Travel card offers a decent value proposition if you’re a discerning traveler looking for perks.

When you apply for this card, you will earn a welcome bonus after completing the minimum spending requirement, usually 20,000 miles after spending $2,000 in the first 90 days.

You’ll earn according to this structure (with no earning caps):

  • 2x miles per $1 spent on airfare, hotels, and car rentals
  • 1x miles per $1 spent on all other purchases

You’ll also get an annual $50 airline incidental fee credit and an $85 statement credit every 4 years towards Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

It’s important to note that the Global Entry application fee is $100, while the TSA PreCheck application fee is $85 — so if you apply for Global Entry, you won’t get the entire amount credited back.

Other benefits include no foreign transaction fee, zero fraud liability, a complimentary credit score with VantageScore by Equifax, fraud alerts, and the ability to customize card controls.

The annual fee is $89, which is waived for the first year. You can also get the annual fee waived if you have a BB&T Wealth Division advisor-assigned relationship at the time of account opening.

BB&T Spectrum Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card

The BB&T Spectrum Travel Rewards Secured card is recommended for those with limited or bad credit history. So if you’re a BB&T customer looking to establish or rebuild your credit, this could be a great travel credit card for you.

This credit card also comes with a welcome bonus, usually 20,000 miles after spending $2,000 in the first 90 days.

It follows the same earning structure as the unsecured card:

  • 2x miles per $1 spent on airfare, hotels, and car rentals
  • 1x miles per $1 spent on all other qualifying purchases

It also comes with the same annual $50 airline incidental fee credit and $85 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit. There are no foreign transaction fees.

The main difference between this card and the unsecured card is that the credit limit on this card will depend on the deposit you put upfront.

The last Spectrum Travel Rewards credit card is the business version, known as the BB&T Spectrum Travel Rewards Business card.

This is BB&T’s best business credit card and it shares a lot of the same benefits as the personal version.

Currently, you can earn a welcome bonus after signing up for this card and meeting a spending requirement; it’s usually 20,000 miles after $2,000 in the first 90 days of spending.

You’ll earn 2x miles on airfare, hotels, and car rentals and 1x miles on all other purchases. Enjoy an $85 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee reimbursement, too.

This card comes with zero fraud liability, as well as fraud alerts, no foreign transaction fees, overdraft protection on up to 2 business deposit accounts, and card management tools through BB&T eZBusiness.

The annual fee is $49, which is waived for the first year. Lastly, employee cards can be added at no extra cost.

Spectrum Cash Rewards Cards

Spectrum Rewards consists not only of Spectrum Travel Rewards but also Spectrum Cash Rewards!

The title is self-explanatory; Spectrum Cash Rewards is perfect for those looking for simple cash-back instead of travel-related rewards.

Let’s look at all of our credit card options.

BB&T Vantage Visa Signature Credit Card

As BB&T’s flagship credit card for its wealth management clients, the BB&T Vantage Visa Signature card gets you access to some solid cash-back perks.

When you sign up for the card, you’ll earn 1.5% cash rewards for every $1 spent on qualified purchases.

You’ll get personalized Visa Signature Concierge assistance 24/7, discounts and upgrades at the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection, and shopping deals with Visa Signature.

The BB&T Vantage Visa Signature card comes with secondary rental car coverage, emergency assistance services, travel accident insurance, purchase security, zero liability fraud protection, access to BB&T Deals, and more.

Perhaps the best part of this card is that there are no fees for foreign transactions, cash advances, balance transfers, late payments, or being over-credit-limit. However, there is still an APR (albeit a low one) charged on purchases, balance transfers, and cash advances, so keep that in mind.

In addition, the $125 annual fee is waived for BB&T Wealth clients assigned to a Wealth advisor. If you’re not a BB&T Wealth client, the first annual fee is waived (after that, the full annual fee applies).

BB&T Spectrum Cash Rewards Credit Card

The BB&T Spectrum Cash Rewards card is the best option for everyday expenses as a consumer because you’ll earn:

  • 3% cash-back on gas
  • 2% cash-back on utilities and groceries
  • 1% cash-back on all other purchases

There is a monthly cap of $1,000 on spending in combined purchases earning 3% and 2% cash-back, and after that, you’ll earn 1% cash-back. Unfortunately, with such a low cap on earnings, this means that you’ll probably max out the categories every month.

If you hold this credit card and redeem rewards into your BB&T checking or savings account, you’ll get a 10% bonus.

You’ll also enjoy the standard benefits available, like fraud alerts, zero fraud liability, a free VantageScore credit score by Equifax, customized card controls, and more.

This card has no annual fee.

BB&T Spectrum Cash Rewards Secured Credit Card

As the only secured cash-back credit card in BB&T’s portfolio, the BB&T Spectrum Cash Rewards Secured card earns 3% cash-back on gas, 2% cash-back on utilities and groceries, and 1% cash-back elsewhere.

There’s a monthly bonus cap on $1,000 of purchases for the 3% and 2% categories, combined.

You’ll also get that 10% bonus on your cash-back when redeemed into your BB&T checking or savings account.

What makes this card a secured card is that your credit limit is determined by the up-front deposit you make. If you put in a large deposit, you’ll get a higher credit limit.

The annual fee is $19.

BB&T Spectrum Cash Rewards for Business Credit Card

As the final credit card on our list, the BB&T Spectrum Cash Rewards for Business card is the main business cash-back card available.

You’ll earn 3% cash-back on gas, 2% cash-back at restaurants and office supply stores, and 1% cash-back elsewhere.

The combined monthly cap on 3% and 2% purchases is $2,000. After this is maxed out, the card will earn 1% back. You’ll also earn a 10% cash-back bonus if you redeem your rewards into your BB&T business deposit account.

Other important perks include employee cards for no additional fee, overdraft protection on up to 2 business deposit accounts, zero liability fraud protection, BB&T eZBusiness tools, and more.

This card has no annual fee.

How To Redeem Spectrum Travel Rewards Points

Let’s talk about Spectrum Travel Rewards points. You can currently redeem your points for travel, cash-back, gift cards, and more.

Your rewards are redeemable through the online portal at BBT.com or through the BB&T Rewards Center at 844-735-3249.

The best way to redeem Spectrum Travel Rewards points is for hotel stays because you’ll get 75% more in value for this type of redemption, which would net you around 1.75 cents per point of value!

Other redemptions are worth 1 cent per point.

If you redeem your points for airfare, you can only do so on a major, U.S.-based airline — there’s a $28 airline ticket redemption fee plus a minimum redemption amount of 15,000 miles.

How To Redeem Spectrum Cash Rewards Points

Redeeming Spectrum Cash Rewards points is ridiculously simple — you can just redeem your cash-back as a statement credit to your account, an electronic deposit into your eligible BB&T checking or savings account, or as a mailed check to you.

Remember, if you deposit your rewards into an eligible BB&T account, you’ll get a 10% bonus. Under this bonus, if you redeemed $100 of cash-back, you would get $110.

You can also redeem your cash-back for airfare, but since there’s a $28 airline ticket redemption fee, we definitely don’t recommend this.

Final Thoughts

BB&T offers some pretty unfussy credit cards.

The most exciting aspect of Spectrum Rewards is that if you have a credit card earning Spectrum Travel Rewards, you can use your points on hotels and earn a 75% bonus on the redemption value, which would net you 1.75 cents per point!

Besides that, BB&T only offers bare-minimum benefits under its Visa Signature identity.

The good news is that annual fees aren’t high at all, and you might even be able to get annual fees waived if you have the right banking relationship with BB&T.
