The American Express® Business Gold Card has changed substantially over the last decade, from its bonus categories to its annual fee and statement credits.

This article tracks how the card’s benefits, credits, earning rates, and restrictions have changed from 2017 to 2026, including several major refreshes that reshaped its value for business owners.

As of 2026

Today, the Amex Business Gold card carries a $375 annual fee (rates and fees) (Source: American Express).

What exactly does that annual fee get you in 2026? The card now offers flexible bonus categories that automatically reward businesses for their top spending habits, along with business-focused statement credits, Walmart+ membership credits, cell phone protection, and elevated earning rates on select travel purchases. Some benefits require enrollment.

Let’s compare that to what the card looked like nearly a decade ago.

Amex Business Gold Card’s Benefit Changes and Restrictions Since 2017

In 2017, the card was known as the Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN and carried a much lower $175 annual fee. Many public offers at the time waived the annual fee for the first year, though the standard ongoing annual fee remained $175.

Since then, the card has undergone 2 major refreshes:

  • A 2018 overhaul that introduced the flexible “top 2 categories” earning structure
  • A 2023/2024 refresh that added statement credits, removed some popular bonus categories, and increased the annual fee again

Card Evolution Overview

Here’s how the Amex Business Gold card’s benefits and restrictions compared in 2017 versus 2026:

2017 to 2021

In 2017, the Business Gold Rewards Card focused heavily on traditional business spending categories. At the time, cardholders earned 3x Membership Rewards points in 1 category of their choice from a list that included:

  • Airfare purchased directly from airlines
  • U.S. purchases for advertising in select media
  • U.S. shipping purchases
  • U.S. gas stations
  • Computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases

All other eligible purchases earned 1x points. The card also featured a 25% Membership Rewards Pay With Points rebate when redeeming points for eligible flights through AmexTravel.com. The annual fee was just $175.

The Major 2018 Refresh

In 2018, American Express completely overhauled the card.

The biggest change was the move away from manually selecting a single bonus category. Instead, the card began automatically awarding 4x Membership Rewards points in the 2 eligible categories where a business spent the most each billing cycle. This change made the card significantly more flexible for businesses with changing expenses.

The new 4x earning structure applied to:

  • U.S. purchases at restaurants
  • U.S. purchases at gas stations
  • U.S. shipping purchases
  • Airfare purchased directly from airlines
  • Advertising purchases in select media
  • Computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases

However, American Express also introduced a new annual cap that restricted how much spending could earn bonus rewards. The 4x points applied only to the first $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year; thereafter, purchases earned 1x points.

The refresh also came with a sizable annual fee increase from $175 to $295.

Still, many businesses viewed the change positively because the earning structure became much more flexible.

What Stayed Mostly the Same Through 2021

Between 2018 and 2021, the Amex Business Gold card remained relatively stable. Unlike The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, which leaned heavily into perks packed with statement credits and business-focused benefits, the Amex Business Gold card stayed centered on rewards earning rather than coupons and credits.

The biggest standout feature during this period remained the card’s ability to automatically maximize bonus categories without requiring manual activation.

Hot Tip:

The Amex Business Gold card became especially popular among businesses with high advertising spending, since online ad purchases with companies such as Google and Facebook qualified for 4x points.

2021 to 2025

Here’s a major recap of the Amex Business Gold card benefits in 2021 vs. 2025:

2025

  • $295 annual fee
  • 4x points in the 2 eligible categories where your business spends the most each billing cycle
    • Bonus categories included airfare, gas stations, advertising, shipping purchases, and computer hardware, software, and cloud computing purchases
    • 4x points capped at $150,000 in combined purchases annually, then 1x
  • No monthly statement credits
  • No Walmart+ benefit
  • No cell phone protection
  • 25% Pay With Points rebate on eligible flights through Amex Travel
  • $375 annual fee
  • 4x points in the 2 eligible categories where your business spends the most each billing cycle
    • Bonus categories include U.S. advertising, U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, transit, U.S. wireless services, and U.S. electronic goods/software providers
    • 4x points capped at $150,000 in combined purchases annually, then 1x
  • Up to $240 annual Flexible Business Credits for eligible U.S. FedEx (through October 1, 2026), Grubhub, and office supply store purchases (up to $20 monthly; enrollment required)
  • Walmart+ monthly membership statement credits included
  • Cell phone protection included when paying wireless bills with the card
  • 25% Pay With Points rebate eliminated

In late 2023, American Express rolled out the Amex Business Gold card’s biggest refresh since 2018. The annual fee increased from $295 to $375, while the card shifted further toward statement credits and modern business spending categories.

The refresh introduced up to $240 in annual Flexible Business Credits for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores (enrollment required), along with Walmart+ membership credits and cell phone protection (Source: American Express).

The refresh also introduced a cosmetic update, giving cardholders the option to choose between the traditional gold design and a new rose gold version.

Amex also expanded the eligible 4x bonus categories to include transit purchases, U.S. wireless telephone services, and U.S. electronic goods retailers/software providers (Source: American Express).

However, these additions came with notable removals. American Express removed airfare purchased directly from airlines and U.S. shipping purchases as eligible 4x categories, representing one of the largest earning devaluations in the card’s history. Another major benefit removal came in 2024, when Amex eliminated the 25% Membership Rewards Pay With Points rebate for eligible flights booked through AmexTravel.com, which now applies only to the Amex Business Platinum card.

The card’s core strength remained intact: businesses still automatically earn 4x Membership Rewards points in the 2 eligible categories where they spend the most each billing cycle, without needing to manually select categories.

2025 to Today

Since the 2024 refresh, the Amex Business Gold card has remained mostly stable through 2026. However, American Express continued expanding the card’s business-focused credits.

American Express Membership Rewards

Today, cardholders receive up to $845 in annual statement credits and benefits. That includes the new up to $300 ChatGPT Business credit, plus existing perks such as the up to $150 annual Squarespace credit, up to $155 annually toward a Walmart+ monthly membership, and up to $240 annually in flexible business credits (some benefits require enrollment) (Source: American Express).

The Amex Business Gold card has stayed focused on flexible rewards for small-business spending. Its biggest strength remains automatic category optimization. Businesses earn 4x Membership Rewards points in the 2 eligible categories where they spend the most each billing cycle, making the card especially useful for companies with fluctuating expenses, heavy ad spend, software and cloud purchases, wireless bills, or transit costs.

Still, the card is meaningfully more expensive — and more restricted — than it was in 2017. Over that period, the annual fee increased from $175 to $375, legacy bonus categories such as airfare and shipping were removed, and statement credits became a larger part of the card’s benefits.

That mirrors a broader shift across premium rewards cards: higher annual fees, more partner-backed credits, and more fine print around how cardholders unlock value.

It remains one of the most rewarding business cards for business owners who want to maximize bonus categories without manually tracking or activating them.
