It seems like online shopping is now the norm, with many people buying their groceries, shopping for home goods, and purchasing pet food online.

According to figures from the data gathering firm Statista, more than 263 million American consumers shop online, which is roughly 80% of the U.S. population. That figure is expected to balloon to nearly 290 million by 2027.¹

It’s undisputed that global titan Amazon has a stronghold on the e-commerce market. However, the monopoly Amazon once had on the industry may not be as strong as it once was due to the expansion of online shopping platforms worldwide.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has Walmart+, a shopping membership subscription like Amazon Prime. This perk is complimentary for those who have The Platinum Card® from American Express, but a recent refresh of the American Express® Business Gold Card gives holders of this business card Walmart+ access as well.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to sign up for the Walmart+ membership that’s included in your Amex Business Gold card’s benefits, break down membership benefits, and examine how it stacks up against merchants such as Amazon Prime.

There’s a lot to tackle, so without further adieu, let’s dive right in!

Hot Tip: Check to see if you’re eligible for a welcome bonus offer of up to 200k points with the Amex Business Gold card. The current public offer is 100,000 points. (This targeted offer was independently researched and may not be available to all applicants.)

Key Benefits of the Amex Business Gold Card

A complimentary Walmart+ membership is a benefit you’ll receive when holding the Amex Business Gold card. Still, the card offers a myriad of other benefits that make it a worthwhile addition to your roster, especially if you’re a business owner.

The Amex Business Gold card now offers statement credits on select purchases. You will receive up to $395 in statement credits a year. That breaks down to:

  • Up to $155 back annually for a monthly Walmart+ membership
  • Up to $240 back annually ($20 a month) for eligible purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores

The card recently underwent a massive refresh with how you earn Membership Rewards points using the card. The refresh puts it on par with Amex’s other consumer and business cards in becoming a hybrid travel and dining card, with some similar benefits as the Amex Platinum card with a price point more akin to the American Express® Gold Card.

You’ll still earn 4x Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on your top 2 spending categories. Amex has expanded the categories to include transit (taxis, rideshares, and subways), goods purchased from electronic goods retailers, and wireless telephone service charges. These new categories join the existing 4x categories, including U.S. purchases at gas stations, U.S. purchases at restaurants (including takeout and delivery), and U.S. media providers for advertising in select media.

Additionally, you’ll now earn 3x Membership Rewards points on flights, prepaid hotels, and prepaid packages booked through AmexTravel.com.

A new benefit added to the card is cell phone protection against theft and damage, including cosmetic damage such as a cracked phone screen.

The card’s annual fee will increase to $375 beginning February 1, 2024.

Bottom Line:

The Amex Business Gold card recently got a considerable refresh that puts it solidly in the mid-tier category. Aside from the Walmart+ statement credit, Amex Business Gold card members have more ways to earn 4x Membership Rewards points on purchases.

Where Can I Use My Walmart+ Membership?

If you shop at Walmart regularly, these benefits will likely be pretty valuable for you. In fact, the retailer claims that Walmart+ members save more than $800 yearly, on average, thanks to the platform.

However, the value you’ll gain from the membership — free or not — will depend on how close you live to a Walmart, especially if you plan to use the grocery delivery service. If you live in an area without a Walmart, you won’t be able to benefit from the grocery delivery or the discounts on prescriptions and gas. Still, you can receive free 2-day delivery with no minimum for online shopping done through the website.
