Earning a giant welcome offer is one of the main draws to the Platinum Card® from American Express — upwards of 6-figure sums in Membership Rewards points.

For years, savvy travelers have earned these welcome bonuses across multiple versions of the Amex Platinum card, issued not only by American Express but by others like Charles Schwab, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley.

Here’s exactly how these restrictions have changed since 2014.

As of 2026

Beyond Platinum-specific rules, American Express generally enforces the following restrictions across its consumer and business cards:

  • You can have no more than 5 American Express credit cards at any given time.
  • You can have no more than 10 American Express cards without preset spending limits* (which includes the Amex Platinum card) at any given time.
  • You can only qualify for 2 new Amex cards in a 90-day period.

*No preset spending limit means your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

2014 to 2021

The “once-per-lifetime” rule for the Amex Platinum card — which still exists today — was first introduced in 2014.

In simple terms, no matter how much time had passed since you last held the Amex Platinum card, you’re generally only eligible to earn the welcome bonus once. If you’d previously had that exact card, you wouldn’t qualify for the welcome bonus offer again.

Before 2014, there were effectively no such restrictions. You could apply for the same Amex card multiple times, earn the welcome offer repeatedly, and hold multiple Platinum cards at once.

However, it’s important to note that this rule originally applied only to having the same card multiple times. So even if you had already earned a bonus on the standard Platinum Card, you could still apply for other versions — like the American Express Platinum Card® for Schwab, Platinum Card® from American Express for Goldman Sachs, or The Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Morgan Stanley — and earn additional welcome offers by applying for multiple cards.

Hot Tip:

Interestingly, consumer data points since then suggest that the “lifetime” restriction may not be truly permanent, with some reports indicating eligibility can reset after roughly 7 years. In other cases, American Express specifically excludes the “one bonus per lifetime” language on some targeted welcome offers, which still allows some applicants to score multiple bonus offers on the same card. Note that individual experiences can vary on these.

2021 to 2023

In 2021, American Express began rolling out “one bonus” restrictions on the Amex Platinum card and Amex Schwab Platinum card.

At the time, the issuer added this clause into the official terms, stating: “Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this Card or previous versions of the Platinum Card. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility.”

Around this time, American Express also introduced its (now) well-known pop-up notification during the Amex Platinum card application process. This tool serves as an eligibility screening, flagging applicants who may not qualify for a welcome offer based on factors such as prior card history or limited spending on past Amex cards.

As the pop-up notification informs applicants that they aren’t eligible for the bonus, they can choose to withdraw their application without incurring a hard credit inquiry. Essentially, the pop-up message lets you know you can still apply for the card, but you wouldn’t receive the welcome bonus offer attached to opening the account in this scenario.

In sum, these were the first indications that American Express was clamping down on “gaming” behavior and imposing real limitations to prevent people from qualifying for multiple bonus offers within the same card family.

2023 to 2024

In 2023, American Express introduced its Apply With Confidence tool, which allows applicants to see whether they’re likely to be approved before submitting a full application. After completing the application — but before hitting submit and triggering a credit pull — Amex provides a decision and, importantly, indicates whether you’re eligible for the welcome offer.

This Apply With Confidence tool doesn’t always work for those with existing Amex accounts, but it’s truly useful for new customers who haven’t had an Amex card previously.

2024 to 2025

By 2024, the restrictions for the Amex Platinum card became firmly locked in. American Express rolled out “family language” across all versions of the Amex Platinum card, including the Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs variants.

In doing so, Amex stopped treating these cards as separate products and grouped them into a single family, effectively marking the end of the multi-Platinum card welcome bonus strategy.

2025 to Today

In June 2025, the Amex Platinum card switched its welcome offer approach entirely, moving to a variable, “as high as offer” and increasing the spending requirement significantly. As it stands, this is the current public welcome offer for new applicants:

  • Apply and find out if you're eligible for as high as 175,000 points after spending $12,000 in eligible purchases in the first 6 months. Welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer.

Rather than offering a single, blanket welcome bonus to all applicants, this updated structure allows American Express to determine eligibility on a more individualized basis. As a result, some user reports suggest the “once-per-lifetime” restriction may have actually loosened in certain cases.

This actually defies the longstanding rules, as some people have qualified for multiple bonus offers on the Amex Platinum card recently.

Final Thoughts

The rules around the Amex Platinum card have changed dramatically — not just in how many points you can earn from a welcome offer but also regarding who can earn them. In some ways, it’s actually easier today for applicants to determine whether they qualify for a welcome offer on the Amex Platinum card, thanks to tools that show a specific bonus offer and eligibility pop-up message before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get the Amex Platinum card 175k welcome offer?

By applying directly on American Express’ website, you can find out if you’re eligible for a welcome offer as high as 175,000 points after spending $12,000 in eligible purchases in the first 6 months. Note that welcome offers vary, and you may not qualify for an offer.

If you’re approved, you can view your specific welcome offer without impacting your credit score. Your credit may only be affected if you choose to accept the offer and open the account.

Can you earn another Amex Platinum card welcome offer?

The best way to find out is to fill out the application for the Amex Platinum card. American Express will notify applicants if they’re eligible for the welcome offer on the Amex Platinum card before running a hard inquiry on their credit report.

If you’re not eligible, you can exit the application without any impact to your credit score.

Why am I getting a pop-up notification that I'm not eligible for the Amex Platinum card's welcome offer?

American Express uses an algorithm to determine your eligibility for the Amex Platinum card and its welcome offer. Factors can include the number of Amex cards you have open (or had but then closed in the past) and also your spending on existing accounts.

What is the value of 175,000 Membership Rewards points?

The value of 175,000 Amex points varies depending on how you redeem them. They’re worth $1,750 when used through AmexTravel.com at 1 cent per point, but if you leverage the issuer’s transfer partners, you could redeem them for $3,850 (or more) worth of travel. That’s because we value Amex Membership Rewards points at 2.2 cents apiece.
