If you fly Delta with any regularity and want a straightforward way to earn SkyMiles faster, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card is often the entry point into the airline’s co-branded lineup. It’s designed for occasional to moderate Delta flyers who value free checked bags, priority boarding, and a manageable annual fee over premium lounge access.

In this guide, we look at when it makes sense to apply, how the welcome bonus has evolved, what benefits matter most, and whether this card deserves a long-term spot in your wallet.

Issued by American Express in partnership with Delta Air Lines, this card has been part of the SkyMiles portfolio for years, serving as Delta’s entry-level personal credit card.

When To Apply for the Delta Gold Card

At its core, the Delta Gold card is an airline rewards credit card built specifically for Delta loyalists. It comes with a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150 (rates & fees).

Instead of earning flexible Membership Rewards points that can transfer to multiple airlines and hotels, you earn Delta SkyMiles directly. That means your rewards are tied to 1 program, which works well if you consistently fly Delta, but limits flexibility compared to transferable currencies.

Travelers tend to like this card because it delivers tangible, easy-to-use benefits. Free checked bags can quickly offset the annual fee for even a couple of round-trip flights, and priority boarding makes the airport experience smoother. The earning structure is straightforward, and the spending requirement for the welcome bonus offer is generally accessible.

This is not a premium airline card, and it doesn’t try to be. You won’t get lounge access or elite status just for holding it. The annual fee is modest compared to higher-tier Delta cards, making it appealing for travelers who want airline perks without paying for luxury benefits they may not use.

The card has been around in various forms for more than a decade, evolving alongside the SkyMiles program. Over time, American Express has adjusted the welcome offers and benefits, but the core positioning has remained consistent: entry-level access to Delta perks.

Currently, the Delta Gold card features the following public welcome offer:

  • Earn 70,000 miles after you spend $3,000 in your first 6 months, plus another 20,000 miles after spending an additional $2,000 in your first 6 months. Offer Ends 04/01/2026.

Here’s how that compares to recent publicly available offers:

The Delta Gold card’s welcome offers have fluctuated far more frequently than a simple year-over-year comparison would suggest. The pattern shows frequent short-term swings between elevated and base-level offers.

From late 2021 through 2025, the card repeatedly cycled between 40,000-mile offers and elevated 65,000-, 70,000-, or even 80,000-mile promotions. In several cases, these higher offers only lasted a month or 2 before dropping back down. This indicates that American Express regularly uses limited-time elevated offers to drive applications, rather than maintaining 1 steady “standard” bonus.

The most common baseline offer over the past several years appears to be 40,000 to 50,000 miles after relatively modest spending. However, elevated promotions of 65,000 to 80,000 miles have appeared consistently, sometimes multiple times within the same year.

Delta SkyMiles Frequent Flyer Program

The key takeaway is that this card regularly rotates through elevated promotions. If you’re applying during a 40,000- or 50,000-mile window, history suggests there’s a strong chance a 70,000- or 80,000-mile offer could come around soon. Timing matters more here than with many other airline cards.

Amex Delta Gold Card Benefits

The Delta Gold card is an introductory-level airline credit card, so it doesn’t include luxury perks like airport lounge access or complimentary elite status. Instead, it focuses on practical travel benefits that most Delta flyers can use right away.

Benefits of the Delta Gold card include:

  • Earn 2x miles on Delta purchases
  • Earn 2x miles at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S.
  • Earn 2x miles at U.S. supermarkets
  • Earn 1x miles on other eligible purchases
  • First checked bag free on Delta flights
  • Zone 5 priority boarding
  • Inflight savings on eligible purchases
  • 15% award booking discount using SkyMiles on Delta-operated flights

The complimentary checked bag benefit is often the biggest value driver. For families or frequent flyers, baggage savings alone can quickly justify the annual fee. Priority boarding also adds practical value, especially on busy routes.

A sleeper benefit of this card, though, is the award booking discount. When redeeming SkyMiles for Delta flights, you pay 15% fewer miles. This benefit can be used an unlimited number of times, providing ongoing value for those who use miles regularly.

Final Thoughts

The Delta Gold card remains a strong option for travelers who fly Delta regularly but don’t need premium perks. Its benefits are practical, its annual fee is manageable, and its welcome offers have become increasingly competitive over time.

Still, the welcome offer should be only one part of your decision. The best credit card is one that aligns with how often you fly, how you value airline perks, and whether you can realistically maximize the ongoing benefits.

If you’re a consistent Delta flyer looking for an affordable way to enhance your travel experience and earn SkyMiles faster, the Delta Gold card can be a practical long-term addition to your wallet.
