Garuda Indonesia has a very generous free checked luggage allowance across all cabin classes, right up to 110 pounds (50 kg) for first class passengers.
For most destinations, they work on a weight system, so you can take as many bags as you like as long as they don’t exceed the maximum weight allowance combined.
However, U.S. routes work on a “piece system” for economy and business class (allowing 2 pieces of luggage) and the standard weight system for first class passengers. If you need to take even more luggage, you can save 15% by booking online or with their call center in advance.

Hi, I am planning to travel from Bali to Lombok with you’re airline on the bigger plane (737-800), and wanted to check the maximum length for a surfboard. My board is 8 ft (2.44m) including bag. Thank you Dara
Hi Dara,
Please be aware that we are not Garuda Airlines – we are UpgradedPoints.com, so we cannot confirm 100%. The information on the airline’s baggage page states that on larger planes, surfboards can measure up to 300cm/3 metres.
I will be traveling from Jakarta to Lombok, do you know if I can split the checked baggage of 20kgs into 2 pieces? Thx
Hi Dara,
Yes, this route would allow you to split the 20 kgs between 2 bags.
We are scuba divers. For domestic Garuda flight, economy class, what’s the luggage allowance? Thanks
Hi Perry,
Flying in Economy, passengers are permitted to bring 20 kg of luggage as their checked allowance. There is also a special additional allowance of 23 kg for passengers bringing sports equipment such as scuba equipment.
I am travelling from Bali to Australia. How much does it cost per kg for extra luggage as I would like to bring an oversized piece back from here.
Hi Tanya,
According to their baggage calculator, extra weight is charged at around $27 USD per kilogram from Bali to Australia.
The information that is provided on this website about extra luggage weight fees for domestic flights is incorrect and misleading. According to the information from this website, for 15kg extra weight on a flight from Bali to Jakarta with the ticket purchased at $70 I should pay for excess luggage $15.75, while I paid almost $80. On Garuda website they have charges list per destination. For DPS-SUB each extra 1kg costs roughly $5. Please update your website so other people will not be surprised at the counter as much as I was today.
Hi Ela,
Thank you for letting us know about these changes. We are in the process of getting this post updated.

Do you allow passengers to carry Apple Macbook Pro on your flights? In cabin baggage or hold baggage?
Hi Charlie,
Thai Airways reported that the affected laptops could not be brought on board at all, unless the battery had been replaced already. Please be aware that we are not Thai Airways so to confirm this, you will need to contact Thai Airways directly.
Hi,
We are flying back to UK and would like to know how much Garuda charges for oversized luggage as we would like to bring a piece of art/wood with us?
Many thanks
Hi Bush,
Garuda does not disclose its oversized luggage charges so you will need to contact the airline directly to enquire.
I have a roller painting from Bali and I am flying to Australia. It is 120cm long and only weighs 3kg. Will it fit in the carryon overhead compartments in the plane?
Hi Amber,
I cannot say definitively, but it might fit. You also might be subject to oversized baggage fees so keep that in mind as well.
My wife and daughter are looking to book a Garuda flight from Bali to Jakarta, but your baggage allowance is only 20kgs. They will have 30kgs each, so an extra 20kgs on top of the combined 40kgs allowance. What would be the extra cost of 20kg from Bali to Jakarta?
Hi David,
According to this chart, the fee for this route is 127,600 IDR (about $8.63) per kg. So, for 20 extra kgs, would be $172.60.
