Nearly every major airline has its own loyalty program, but some have more compelling redemption opportunities than others. Japan Airlines Mileage Bank is one of my favorite programs because of its valuable redemptions for premium cabins.

Though JAL Mileage Bank miles have historically been difficult to earn, that has changed with new transfer partners, including Citi ThankYou Rewards. With a major transfer bonus in play, I transferred 500,000 Citi ThankYou Points to JAL Mileage Bank. Here’s how I plan to redeem those miles.

Citi 30% Transfer Bonus to Japan Airlines Mileage Bank

On September 20, 2026, Citi added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as a Citi ThankYou Rewards transfer partner. To celebrate the launch of this new partnership, Citi is offering a limited-time 30% transfer bonus to JAL Mileage Bank through October 24, 2026.

The exact transfer ratio depends on whether you have a Citi ThankYou Rewards card with an annual fee. Since I do, I transferred 500,000 Citi ThankYou Rewards points, which gave me 650,000 Japan Airlines Mileage Bank miles.

This was a major decision. We value Citi ThankYou Rewards points at 1.6 cents per point, so my 500,000 points are worth $8,000.

Bottom Line:

By taking advantage of the 30% transfer bonus, I earned an additional 150,000 JAL Mileage Bank miles.

What Makes JAL Mileage Bank Special

Though JAL Mileage Bank underwent a slight devaluation in 2025, the program still offers valuable redemption opportunities.

There is one main reason I value JAL Mileage Bank highly: JAL typically makes more award seats available to its Mileage Bank members than to partner programs, such as Oneworld partner programs, including American Airlines AAdvantage, The British Airways Club, and Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards.

This is especially important for travelers like me, who are always on the lookout for JAL business or first class awards between the U.S. and Japan. Using Mileage Bank could give me access to award seats that aren’t available through partner programs.

Another major benefit: members can book JAL awards up to 360 days in advance. This provides roughly an additional month to book some of the harder-to-find premium cabin awards, compared to other programs like American AAdvantage.

Hot Tip:

JAL Mileage Bank requires members to have an account open for at least 60 days before they can redeem miles for an award ticket. If you’re not already a JAL Mileage Bank member, consider opening an account now.

JAL Mileage Bank Award Charts

JAL Mileage Bank uses different award charts depending on whether you’re flying JAL, a single partner airline, or multiple Oneworld airlines.

JAL flights are generally priced based on regions, and partner awards are based on the total distance flown. This can be extremely valuable, as some destinations much farther away can cost roughly the same number of miles within a region. This pricing also creates numerous sweet spots within the program.

However, there are other things to consider. JAL first class awards are also subject to seasonal pricing, with different mileage rates depending on whether you travel during the low, regular, or high season. Award pricing between the seasons can vary significantly.

Additionally, JAL offers significant discounts on round-trip partner-operated awards. Rather than simply adding 2 individual one-way awards together, JAL prices awards based on the combined distance of the entire itinerary — which can often result in tens of thousands of miles saved.

For example, a one-way award redemption may cost 60,000 miles, while booking the same award round trip may cost only 85,000 miles instead of 120,000. This is because JAL’s distance bands widen progressively with greater distance, so doubling the distance does not necessarily double the mileage cost.

How I Plan to Redeem My JAL Mileage Bank Miles

There are numerous ways to redeem JAL Mileage Bank miles. The airline is a member of Oneworld, so you can redeem JAL miles with many partner airlines. However, the program also has numerous non-alliance partnerships.

Japan Airlines Business Class to Japan

Although I’ve flown JAL’s premium cabins several times over the years, I still look forward to each new flight, thanks to the consistently wonderful experiences I’ve had. Earlier this year, I flew Japan Airlines’ new A350-1000 business class, which I now consider my favorite business class experience.

Though I have visited Japan 10 times in the past decade, my sister has yet to visit — and she has never flown in a premium cabin. A trip together would be an excellent opportunity, and redeeming JAL miles for business class awards between the U.S. and Japan remains one of the best ways to use them.

According to JAL’s award chart, a one-way JAL business class award between the U.S. and Japan can be booked for as few as 55,000 miles — or 220,000 miles round-trip for 2 adults, plus taxes and fees. Award space for these kinds of awards is competitive.

JAL typically releases more award seats to Mileage Bank members than to members of partner airline loyalty programs. This can make Mileage Bank especially useful when partner programs don’t have the same award availability.

After narrowing my dates, I found award space for 2 adults on a flight 355 days from the date of booking between Chicago (ORD) and Osaka (KIX).

Since award space for multiple people can be hard to come by, I immediately booked the flights. The booking process took only a few minutes since I already had miles in my Mileage Bank account.

The total for 2 round-trip business class award seats came to 220,000 miles and ¥113,000 ($719). The taxes and fees were on the higher side, but the ability to book the exact date I needed more than made up for it.

Japan Airlines business class fares between the U.S. and Japan tend to be quite high — often upward of $5,000 per person. For this redemption, I received roughly 4.7 cents per mile — significantly higher than our valuations for Citi ThankYou Rewards and JAL Mileage Bank miles.

Bottom Line:

Redeeming JAL Mileage Bank miles for business class awards between the U.S. and Japan remains one of the best ways to use them. I was able to redeem 220,000 miles for 2 round-trip business class awards, which gave me roughly 4.7 cents per mile.

Emirates Business Class for Significantly Less

Another excellent use of JAL Mileage Bank miles is for Emirates-operated flights, thanks to the airline’s non-alliance partnership.

Since my sister lives in New York and has wanted to visit Greece, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to redeem more JAL miles. Emirates operates fifth-freedom flights between New York (JFK) and Milan (MXP), as well as between Newark (EWR) and Athens (ATH).

Business class seats directly through Emirates Skywards cost around 87,000 Skywards miles one-way, plus roughly $1,000 in taxes and fees per person.

Through JAL Mileage Bank, the same seats can be booked for just 60,000 miles one-way, or 85,000 miles round-trip (with the distance-based chart’s round-trip award price discount). I found 2 round-trip tickets for just 170,000 JAL miles — a round-trip business class Emirates award seat through JAL Mileage Bank for less than what Emirates charges one-way.

The taxes are significantly lower with JAL as well. Instead of the roughly $1,000 in taxes and fees per person when booking with Emirates, it’s about $250 when booking through JAL Mileage Bank.

Emirates business class fares are typically expensive — often upward of $6,000 per person. For this redemption, I received 6.8 cents per mile.

Final Thoughts

Citi recently added Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as its newest transfer partner and then announced a 30% transfer bonus to JAL Mileage Bank through October 24, 2026. I took advantage of the bonus and transferred 500,000 Citi ThankYou points to JAL.

Using these miles, I booked 2 round-trip Japan Airlines business-class awards to Japan and 2 round-trip Emirates business-class awards between the U.S. and Europe. It saved me thousands of dollars, and I still have more than 250,000 JAL miles to use for future redemptions.
