Welcome back to another weekly roundup, where focus topics include developments in the use of AI in aviation as well as hybrid-electric flying. We’ve also got updates from American Airlines, lounge news from Emirates, and more.

The FAA Is Introducing AI To Help Reduce Delays

New AI technology will be introduced in the Washington D.C. area to help ease flight congestion. While the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) isn’t replacing air traffic controllers, the new SMART (Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories) technology will assist in managing flights arriving and departing from Baltimore (BWI), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and Washington Dulles (IAD). The move comes after the fatal incident between a military helicopter and a passenger plane near DCA in 2025.

AA and Phoenix Airport Have Big Plans

Big news out of Phoenix this week: American Airlines has been chosen as the primary airline for the airport’s new West Terminal. As Phoenix is one of American’s most important hubs, its selection isn’t surprising. PHX’s new West Terminal, which will be the airport’s first major new terminal in almost 40 years, is part of a wider improvement and expansion project dubbed Destination PHX 2050.

American and Starlux Loyalty and Miles Earning Partnership

American Airlines and Starlux have made it clear that their recently announced codeshare agreement is just the start of a much more significant relationship. American confirmed on Thursday that AAdvantage members booking Starlux flights included in the new codeshare will earn miles and Loyalty Points. Additionally, Starlux, a boutique airline based in Taipei (TPE), Taiwan, shared a social media post stating that “a frequent flyer partnership is in the works.” An educated interpretation of this would suggest that loyalty reciprocity could be next.

JSX Confirms up to 100 Hybrid-Electric Aircraft

JSX has confirmed its position at the forefront of the race to hybrid-electric passenger flights in the U.S. The non-traditional, semi-private carrier has confirmed a deposit-backed purchase of 50 to 100 of Heart Aerospace’s ES-36 aircraft.

While a date for the first 36-seater hybrid-electric plane’s flight is likely still a ways off, it’s still something to look forward to.

Emirates Continues Global Lounge Expansion

Emirates has just opened a brand-new airport lounge at Manchester Airport (MAN) in the U.K. The £10 million ($13.2 million) space is part of Emirates’ international lounge project, which kicked off with new locations in Munich and Frankfurt in June. Highlights of the redesigned lounges include a more sophisticated aesthetic and elevated dining, with dishes that reflect the airport’s locale.

This Week’s Route Updates

Alaska Airlines’ New Routes at Seattle’s Paine Field Airport (PAE)

Alaska is increasing its footprint in the Seattle area with new routes at Paine Field, Seattle’s secondary airport. In spring 2027, Alaska will launch a new route from PAE to San Jose (SJC), California, and increase the number of frequencies to Los Angeles (LAX), Portland (PDX), San Diego (SAN), and San Francisco (SFO).

Avelo Adds More Routes at Dallas’ McKinney National Airport (DTX)

Avelo is building on its status as the first airline to operate scheduled flights from McKinney National Airport. In December, the low-cost carrier will add 4 more routes to Atlanta (ATL), Denver (DEN), Nashville (BNA), and New Orleans (MSY).

British Airways Adds More Flights to St. Louis

After launching the route back in April, British Airways is committing to St. Louis by increasing the number of weekly flights for summer 2027. From April 18 until July 2, the British flag carrier will operate a daily service between the 2 cities.

Delta Trims Schedules From the Northeast

In an update to Delta‘s winter schedule, the airline will drop its Philadelphia (PHL) to Seattle service on November 30, 2026, and its JFK to Dallas (DFW) on January 3, 2027. The reason is likely due to tough competition at Alaska Airlines’ home base in Seattle and American Airlines’ hub in Dallas.

Final Thoughts

Loyalty reciprocity between American and Starlux would be a pretty big deal and could even help Starlux’s stated desire to join the Oneworld alliance. JSX’s future electric flights and Emirates’ global lounge improvements are also developments to be excited about. As for AI and air traffic control, part of me can’t help but think this is an example of when we’re relying on it for too much.
