Alaska Airlines has changed how passengers can take advantage of lower airfares after booking, potentially making it more difficult for travelers to save money on their trips.

According to its new policy, effective October 7, 2026, customers seeking a lower fare on an existing reservation must cancel their original booking and purchase a new ticket rather than simply receiving a credit for the fare difference.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Alaska Airlines Now Makes You Cancel and Rebook To Get a Lower Fare

It’s been a busy few weeks for Alaska Airlines, mostly for good reasons. It recently announced the next steps in its new Alaska Accelerate initiative, which aims to elevate its Atmos Rewards loyalty program with new ways to earn elite status, a new Alaska Airlines debit card, new earning rates for partner flights, new partner designations, and new redemption options through Atmos Unlocked.

However, there’s also bad news. As first reported by View from the Wing, Alaska Airlines has apparently stopped offering simple fare adjustments when an existing ticket becomes cheaper.

Instead, passengers must now cancel their reservations, receive the applicable credit, and book the lower-priced flight. While that is bad news on its own, it’s also possible that you may not be able to apply Alaska Wallet credits to the new ticket.

Alaska’s published terms already say you can’t use Alaska Wallet funds to purchase tickets with companion fare code discounts. They also restrict certain seat purchases, including seat upgrades.

This change also poses a risk for companion certificates. If a certificate were to expire after the original booking but before the cancellation, passengers would likely lose access when trying to rebook.

What This Means for Travelers

For travelers, this is a major loss. The biggest concern is the uncertainty this new policy creates. A cheaper fare could theoretically disappear before a new booking is completed, ultimately defeating the measure’s entire purpose. Additionally, travelers could have to pay for a replacement ticket while waiting for the canceled ticket’s funds to become available again.

Travelers need to pay careful attention to the restrictions attached to any tickets and credits before canceling.

Final Thoughts

Alaska Airlines’ new policy change is a step in the wrong direction. Passengers must now cancel existing reservations and rebook to save on airfare.

While this may allow travelers to save some money, restrictions on credits, companion certificates, and seat assignment purchases can significantly reduce the value of the savings.
